Samsung and Panasonic Fighting over Avatar 3D Blu-ray Bundle

According to Australian tech site SmartHouse, Samsung and Panasonic may be fighting over the rights to bundle a 3D version of James Cameron's Avatar with the 3D-compatible HDTVs from their respective brands in the second half of 2010. Initially, Panasonic was the clear favorite. However, now Samsung is reportedly offering "serious money" in a bid for the rights to bundle the sci-fi blockbuster.
Avatar producer Jon Landau had spoken at the Panasonic press conferences at the IFA and CES fairs, and clips from the movie had been used by the Japanese CE maker to showcase its 3D tech. Panasonic had also helped in the production of Avatar.
However, Samsung scored a publicity coup Wednesday when Cameron attended the Korean corporation's 3D launch event in New York. The filmmaker took the stage after a brief concert by the Black Eyed Peas, which was filmed with 3D cameras and that footage (along with the rest of the band's tour) will be available in 3D Blu-ray... exclusively for Samsung customers. Cameron noted that the concert had been filmed with the same cameras he'd used for Avatar and added that Samsung had been "such a visionary leader in getting to market first with these sets."
It is our obligation to remind everyone that, despite all of the above, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment still hasn't publicly changed its official stance that "3D is in the conceptual stage and Avatar will not be out on 3D Blu-ray in November."

Sounds like Samsung might have a leg up on this one since Cameron is in their corner.... |

Yeah, I'll buy the regular version now and when the added special features version comes out I'll trade off the barebones one. Not expecting to get the 3D one anytime soon, unless I come into some serious money to afford the 3D TV and 3D BD Player. |

As much as I can't escape the feeling of "gimmick," the idea of 3-D TV is kind of cool. Still. I'm just not really interested until I can see it without headgear. |

I'll probably skip the April release for now and see how things play out. I liked Avatar but it's not something I'd rush out and buy in 2D since the majority of the appeal is the 3D. |

That would be funny - a Blu-ray authored by Panasonic bundled exclusively by Samsung.
No retailer exclusive will see my money, whether it's Panasonic, Sony, Samsung, Pioneer, Best Buy, Wal*Mart; I don't care, I'll vote with my dollars.
Retailer exclusives are complete bloody nonsense, they're anti-consumer and they deserve a swift death. |

Same here dobyblue. If Avatar 3D goes exclusive, you can forget about the success of 3D on Blu-Ray. Don't even bother. Save it for next gen. |

The camera he used was a Sony. The screens they used to review footage were Mitsubishis the blah blah blah. If Avatar ends up being exclusive to only ONE company, 3D is going to fail. Just release the disc so that the whole world can watch it in 3D. |

I guess Cameron was right ... and Fox was right.
Cameron: The 3D is blu-ray is coming this year
Fox: No 3D blu-ray will be available to the public this year.
It sounds like 3D technology is here.
But selling it to the public is still in the conceptual stages. |

Samsung are the worst in after sales care. I hope Panasonic get the go ahead if this bundling gets the green light. |

Just pointing out that this article isn't saying Avatar would be bundled exclusively. That may well be the case, but this article is not saying that. |

Let me get this straight...they are pushing a new, expensive, gimmicky format that may never catch on with the masses anytime soon. And to compound the problem, every major 3-D release is going to be an exclusive bundle pack? First the Shrek films, now Avatar. I've only heard of a handful of titles available and now you need to buy the right manufactured set in order to obtain any? This is ridiculous! |

*confused* I'm still not getting this exclusive thing with particualr brands and stores. I mean, are they saying that the only way you'red going to get a particular 3D title is to buy a particular brand of TV??? If that's the case, they can shove it. Even if I did end up buying that particualr brand.
Country exclusive releases are stupid enough, ie. Canadian releases, but doing this with particular stores and now brands of equipment is just frakkin' retarded. |

Samsung 3D is dead without Avatar. Panasonic doesnt need Avatar to trump the competition. They cant even meet the demand for their 3D. Cameron is smart. We will have 3D avatar for the holiday season and it wont be a bundle. The 3D war would have a winner by the holiday season and all this bundle talk will be history. |

I think you're all jumping to conclusions here. Right now there are no movies available for the active shutter 3D system that will be the Blu-Ray and TV standard. It makes sense for each set manufacturer to offer a few TV films ready to go in 3D to get the new technology started. Once things are underway the exclusivity should disappear rather quickly. Relax everyone. |

To Lincoln6Echo
What Panasonic is doing is not retarded. It is actually very brilliant if only you understood the mechanics of it all.
Samsung is the biggest manufacturer of lcd screens and the biggest supplier of tvs. Guess who is likely to be the first company to get a 3d tv to the market. That doesnt mean theirs is the best. Contrary to popular belief there IS a demand for 3d tvs and people have been buying samsung 3d tvs only because there is nothing else.
Panasonic knows it can only do a Nation-wide 3D roll out in the US in May. By then many of the early adopters would have bought a Samsung. So they do a limited roll out of a reduced model (to reduce selling price and production time). This will create a heightened demand for when the real roll out comes in May - Ahead of Sony's roll out in June.
I am surprised at Panasonic's price. They intend to obliterate all competition with low price and best quality.
When the dust settles there is be just Samsung plasma 3d vs Panasonic plasma 3d. LCD 3d sucks. |

I think this means that when you buy one of these tvs you will get the movie with it, not necessarily that buying these tvs would be the only means of getting the BD. it's like for example, i bought a PS3 BD remote and it came with the I Am Legend BD (exclusive to that remote), but the BD by itself was widely available. This will be so that those people without 3D tvs can look and say, "this tv comes with the Avatar BD" so that they get the illusion of getting more for their money and for their dive toward 3D. 3D tv owners will be able to just buy the BD separately. At least, this is how I understood it. Might be wrong though. |
