MGM has announced Showgirls, in a "15th Anniversary Sinsational Edition" Blu-ray featuring its NC-17 131-minute uncut version, with a street date of June 15. Writer Joe Eszterhas and director Paul Verhoeven followed up their smash hit Basic Instinct by upping the exploitation ante with this look at the world of Vegas showgirls, which was a critical and box-office failure but went on to earn somewhat of a cult status in home video.
"The Greatest Movie Ever Made": Audio commentary by Showgirls connoisseur David Schmader
Pole Dancing: Finding Your Inner Stripper
Lap Dance Tutorial Featuring the World-Famous Girls of Scores
Best audio commentary ever. You have to hand it to MGM: They could have filed this dog away forever, but they have instead embraced it's awfulness and camp appeal. If you've only ever heard the stories, make this one a blind buy. Trust me on this one.
Wish there were new features, but at least they're including David Schmader's commentary. Hopefully they'll make a boxset again! I love giving it as a gift to new friends.
Showgirls sweet a Guilty pleasure for sure the soundtrack should be kick ass in DTS-HD
And the picture will be Amazing. P.S if Walmart puts this on the shelves seeing that the cover
is very sexy. I May ask Elizabeth Berkley to Sign copies at the cash out HA!
Siouxsie, Nine Inch Nails and The Sisters of Mercy had songs in this flick. That's completely insane and has always been the only reason I don't completely trash this movie back to the stone age.
I would have always loved this movie if not for the rape scene.
Hey, I love this movie with no guilt at all. Seriously misunderstood just like most Paul Verhoeven movies. I own that DVD edition that comes in the big box with glass shots and games... and I have a blast when I show it to my friends. They always have that "What the f..." look on their faces.
Ugh. I know some people think it's cute to like bad movies, but when I think of all the great ones out there that aren't on Blu-ray and see this, it makes me want to puke.
I'm with Disciple of Vedder, repete66211 & probedb. Where's the rest of the Bonds? Where's the US BD of Dances With Wolves? Where's Rain Man or Platoon? Where's Annie Hall (the only Best Picture of the '70's not out on either BD or HD DVD)? Where's the older UA Best Pictures like Midnight Cowboy, In the Heat of the Night, or West Side Story? I was buying the "MGM's out of money" story till now, but if they can release THIS they can at least finish the Bond series...
Liz Berkley and Gina Gershon are uber hawt in this movie. I love it too. Yeah the rape kind of comes out of nowhere and a lot of the acting leaves a lot to be desired, but it's just a fun flesh romp. Not a damn thing wrong with that.
Speaking of Gina Gershon, if they put this out as a double feature with "Bound", I'd be all over it. Instead, I'll just wait until the 20th Anniversary 3D Deluxe Edition comes out....
Love it, can't wait, guilty pleasure. Rock Soldier-Bound had several releases. You can get one at Yesasia with free shipping. I found the PQ/AQ to be a decent upgrade. Enjoy! DB
why cant they just release the rest of the bond films on bluray already. it annoys me having half of the series on bluray and the rest still on dvd, especially on her majesty's secret service.
Sigh. To all those people whining because of this announcement: BOO SUCKS TO YOU!
Yes, because all of the Bond Movies are (frankly) masterpieces, every last one of them; especially Die Another Day—I mean I pray in thanks to the Blu-ray gods THREE times DAILY, because that seminal masterwork can now be witnessed in its fullest 1080p glory, in front-rooms, and home theatres, all around this wonderful world of ours. I live for the day when each one of Roger Moore's extraordinary works gets the same treatment.
And may the Blu-ray gods curse those SD demons, for all time, for not yet allowing me to see a proper, bonafide, HD version, of one of the greatest cinema works of all time: Escape From New York.
I kiss my very own Blu-ray icon's feet thrice daily, in thanks, for the upcoming release of the West Coast sequel—but this release will leave me a broken individual. How do I reconcile having one masterwork and not the other? I mean after placing the Left Coast sequel on the furthest left of my Blu-ray shelf, I will forever feel that the greatest part of me is missing; that is until I can place a genuine, non-upscaled, MGM version, of the East Coast original genious-work, where it rightly (no pun intended) belongs: On the East Coast of my very own Blu-ray shelf.
To those of you who feel like you have to denigrate THIS true shining light of cinema, this TRUE movie masterpiece—by calling it a "dog" and proclaiming it a "guilty pleasure", so as to curry favour with others—do yourselves the greatest favour; come out of the closet and declare your undying love for this rarest of diamonds.
For THIS rare diamond, this masterwork, this SHOWGIRLS—is quite simply—the greatest film there ever was, and that there ever will be.
And to those of you who HAVE seen the light—whenever the lynch mob are on the attack, attacking YOU for your love of THIS movie masterpiece—in your times of weakness, simply remember this: There is a Nomi in each of us, and you have found yours. Now go forth and rejoice!
It's funny how everyone said this movie sucked and it should of never come out, but look at all the comments, mostly good... This is the original movie that spawned all the other showgirl films and actually the other films are the ones that suckec. I do think the movie was campy, but it's fun to watch. I can never get enough of showgirls. It's entertainment at it's best. There's sex, drugs, comedy, trajedy, drama, revenge, music and dancing. What more can you ask for? If you watch the movie and it expected it to be more than what it is, then you really missed out on the fun of the film. I love this film and will always love it, too bad the movie didn't open more doors for Elizabeth she did what she was asked to do and she did it well. I will be buying this film.
This is one of those films where the DVD's LaserDisc-based non-anamorphic transfer is actually superior to the remastered DVD Special Edition, with less accurate colors and zoomed in.
I hope the HD version of this all-time guilty pleasure is a new transfer and not the 2005 one.
Because the revenue generated by a re-release of the Bond films is something they are bargaining with. You don't blow your wad right before you go on sale.
This is one of the top ten films I've been waiting for. When it was released, it was widely considered a "bad" film. Then it made lots of top ten lists for best of the nineties. Films that tend to focus on negative characters don't often do so well with critics. Luckily, this film is one of the best selling home videos of all time. Closet fans and true fans rejoice. Another Verhoeven classic that will look amazing on BD.
NEW YORK (AP) - Elizabeth Berkley is ready to take your question.
The actress will be writing "Ask Elizabeth," a "a self-esteem handbook for teen girls" based on questions she has been asked over the years.
G.P. Putnam's Sons Books for Young Readers announced Tuesday that it expects to release the book next spring. It's an imprint of Penguin Young Readers Group.
The 37-year-old Berkley is best known for the sitcom "Saved by the Bell" and for playing an exotic dancer in the movie "Showgirls." She also appeared in the films "The First Wives Club" and "Any Given Sunday."
