According to specialized site TV Shows on DVD, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment is set to release The Simpsons: The Thirteenth Season on Blu-ray on August 24. It will be presented in three discs. Video will be in the original 1.33:1 aspect ratio. The only special feature announced so far is the inclusion of audio commentaries on all 22 episodes.
Note that, before its 20th season, this series had been produced and broadcast in standard definition only. It is not known at the moment if this upcoming Blu-ray edition will be a re-render or an upconversion.
Season 13 in Blu-ray? Awesome! Well, it will be a lot easier to convert 13 and up to HD since Season 13 was the first season for the animation to go all digital. I hope special features will be included this time around, and seeing it's three disc, it will.
From what I can tell based on information on Wikipedia, Season 14 was the first one that went full digital. Apparently, prior to the 14th season, only a single episode in season 12 was animated in "digital ink and paint" along with some "experiments" in an episode in the 7th season. There may actually be filmed elements of cel animation that can be rescanned in HD for season 13. I wouldn't be surprised if we got an upconvert regardless, but all hope is not lost here. And even if it is an upconvert, lossless audio is still better than nothing.
great news, i liked the 20th season, but felt riped off due to the lack of commentaries (the show did look good though)
I'm glad they are back to releasing the seasons in order, i hated the jump to season 20. All i ask for is decent packaging (the last few DVD realses have been "green" with no plastic, lets hope season 13 bluray is just in a standard keep case with nice art work and NO SLIP COVER!
