The Disney website has revealed that the animated classic Bambi will come out in 2011 as part of the Diamond Edition collection. This information has appeared on the page promoting the upcoming Blu-ray release of Beauty and the Beast.
Bambi was among the titles listed by the studio last year when it announced the Diamond Collection (see blu-ray.com, September 10, 2009). The other Diamond collection title for 2011 is reportedly The Lion King.
@ Arkadin - Disney won't release "The Little Mermaid" or "The Jungle Book" or any others because this is working through the 'Vault' system and so this is coming out 6 years after the original DVD, whereas as you said "The Jungle Book" would only be 3 and a bit. This is definetly coming out because of long it's been since it last came out.
Clone Trooper, I don't think Arkadin is being negative. He's being realistic. Sure, Bambi will probably be released as announced (and I hope it is), but Disney's past history gives us a reason to be a little doubtful. A U.S. release date was given for Dumbo. It never came out. I believe Fantasia has been advertised as "coming soon" for a long time now. It's still not out. I appreciate your positive attitude, but until Bambi is listed on Amazon for pre-order there's reason for at least a bit of skepticism.
@sprindale: Clone Trooper is right: All the titles referred to so far (except Dumbo) are "Vault" titles Disney releases only for a short time every 7-10 years or so. (Look up "Disney Vault" on Wikipedia.) The release dates for these films are strictly controlled by Disney for maximum profit, mainly to assure they're "new" to new generations.
Bambi would actually be slightly rushed for 2011; its last DVD release was in 2005. However, after this year's Vault releases (Beauty and the Beast, Fantasia, Fantasia 2000), the two oldest Vault films will be The Lion King (last released in 2003) and, yes, Bambi. Thus, 2011 is right on track for Bambi. (I'd expect it in December 2011, like Fantasia & Fantasia 2000 presently set for December 7.) It may have moved up because Aladdin was taken off the Vault list after its last Platinum DVD in 2004.
The Little Mermaid was released in 2006 and went back in the Vault a year ago; The Jungle Book was released in 2007 and only went back in January. Neither is likely to be on BD anytime soon.
Please let The Lion King be an early 2011 release...That is my fav disney cartoon of all time (I'm a 26 year old manly man that loves UFC and is working on a half body suit tattoo, but The Lion King will make me ball like a third grader every time...please give it to me in Blu sooner than later!!!!)
@Paddy O: Sorry, but The Lion King is tentatively booked for October 2011. Just a little bit longer...
(That's why I think Bambi will be December 2011; TLK has next year's BATB slot, so Bambi gets the Fantasia slot. Disney used to release one Vault title in the spring and one in the fall, but it looks like they're changing to October & December starting this year.)
@August: It's not yet officially announced, but the rumored release date for Fantasia & Fantasia 2000 is December 7. Since they're the oldest Vault titles out there (both last released in 2000, returned to Vault in 2004) and otherwise BATB (October 5) would be the only Vault release in 2010, the odds of that slipping into 2011 are slim.
@sprindale: I missed your Dumbo comment. I don't like the delay either; that's why I got the Mexican version. There's still some hope for this year, but I suspect it's pretty much set for February 2011. (And yes, I expect it'll be almost identical to the ones released this year, especially the Mexican one. Don't be surprised to see TS3 theatrical trailers on the U.S. BD; they're probably sitting in a Disney warehouse somewhere.)
Bambi is coming in the Spring, Lion King in the Fall. Dumbo is coming in the spring next year, and Fantasia is on the way this December. To those saying Disney changes their mind all the time, the only title that has been canceled for now is Finding Nemo. Dumbo was simply pushed back to co-incide with it's actual 70th Anniversary. (The film was released in October of 1941.) Fantasia was pushed back from Spring into Christmas because it needed more time to complete the restoration. (Fantasia is the longest Disney animated film ever.) For more information about the Disney titles check out my thread...
Bambi is a brilliant film, utilizing every trick in Disney's bag up to that time. It's a tone poem--"Fantasia" with a narrative. A true masterpiece on every level. Not even lion king should be mentioned in the same breath.
Awesome now if they would just start releasing non diamond edition titles. was so disapointed when dumbo got cancled but i ended up picking up the import for a decent price.
But what i really want to start seeing is titles such as Aladdin, Tarzan, Lilo and stitch, hunchback, hercules, great mouse detective, etc.
that1guypicutres you are wrong, both fantasia titles were ready to go this past spring they played fantasia 2000 at el capitan in the spring about a month before the release was suppose to come out, and even at the opening night panel everyone from disney said the blurays were finished and looked great. but that it was decided to wait and tie the bluray releases in with the december home video release of the sorcerers apprentice. so i think i will stay clear of your thread, as i trust the peopel who actually worked on the film more than i trust you.
Dumbo got pushed to next Spring, which is when Bambi will likely come around. They wont do it in December because both Beauty and Fantasia will be hoping for a good Holiday and another film might get in the way. Im not entirely sure how Tangled's Blu-ray release will affect this, but it's likely.
I'd love Bambi on Blu-ray, and about 20 other of my favourite Disney animations. I already have Snow White, Pinocchio and Dumbo, 1, 2 and 4 in the list of Disney animated features. Fingers crossed they release Fantasia soon, to complete my 1-4 set but mostly as that film could be stunning on Blu-ray.
