Confirming the agreement in principle announced earlier this month (see blu-ray.com, July 9), Walt Disney Co. has finalized a deal to sell its Miramax Films unit, including its library, for over $660 million. The buyer is Filmyard Holding, an investor group led by Los Angeles construction magnate Ron Tutor. Filmyard Holding has not yet detailed its plans for the Blu-ray release of Miramax catalog films.
"Although we are very proud of Miramax's many accomplishments, our current strategy for Walt Disney Studios is to focus on the development of great motion pictures under the Disney, Pixar and Marvel brands," said Robert A. Iger, Disney's President and CEO. "We are delighted that we have found a home for the Miramax brand and Miramax's very highly regarded motion picture library."
"I am delighted and honored to acquire the Miramax library," said Ron Tutor. "On behalf of my partners Tom Barrack and Colony Capital, we look forward to sharing this high quality content with the world in every form of media for many years to come."
The Miramax library includes many acclaimed and Academy-award winning titles, such as Pulp Fiction, Shakespeare in Love and The English Patient, as well as major foreign-language titles such as Life Is Beautiful and Amélie.

So is filmyard going to distribute the films themselves, or are they going to licence them to another studio? |

From what I've heard Disney might still distribute the films for about a year. |

I'd love to see them strike a deal with Criterion to do releases of their AAA titles (Pulp Fiction, Amélie, etc.) |

They need to get them over to Criterion if applicable. Like Pulp Fiction. |

I love how disney mentions Marvel brands when they talk about motion pictures. Disney is unlikley to be producing a marvel film for a few years. Paramount and FOX hold rights to most of the big characters right now, and Sony isn't letting spider-man go any time soon. They did get back the Punisher rights recently though which ironically would be a perfect kind of marvel film to relase under Miramax as oppsed to Walt disney films |

Hopefully Filmyard is aggressive and won't skimp on the remastering. |

Disney owns Marvel Studios now so effectively they're co-producers on all the Marvel films, I believe. |

Hopefully the company that Disney turned the Miraimax titles over to to will do just as good a job with the transfers. |

SonOfArathorn, Cold Mountain is available in Canada on Blu-ray for $10--check amazon.ca. Can't comment on the quality, though (it's released by Alliance). |

Criterion editions of Miramax films would set a new bar in all-around Blu-ray quality. IMO, this would be one of the best marriages for the BD format. |

This is potentially exciting news. I would love to see Pulp Fiction and Amelie get blu-ray releases in the near future. |
