Move over, 007. MGM Home Entertainment is set to release Troll 2 on October 5, in a BD/DVD combo "20th Anniversary Nilbog Edition". This 1990 low-budget horror film about man-eating goblins, currently number 64 on the IMDB Bottom 100, recently shot back to fame after the release of the documentary Best Worst Movie. Special features have not been revealed.
Bond is dnob backwards... it makes no sense! Why would you release something that makes no sens on Blu-Ray? Blu-Ray is the future, and the future is no place for dnob!
I don't get some of the comments above. It's not like MGM isn't releasing the Bond movies BECAUSE they chose to release "Troll 2" instead. That would be the most ridiculous chain of reasoning ever.
MGM is going through hard times, and I doubt they have the funds to do the Bond movies properly which might be the reason for those releases not happening.
So they are releasing this wonderfully trashy gem, and I'm over the moon. I already know exactly which friends I'll be inviting over to absorb copious amounts of beer while wallowing in the awfulness that is "Troll 2". Here's hoping for some nice special features! Dance, my children, dance!
Oh, and don't get me wrong, I'm waiting for those Bonds, too. Come on, MGM!
I'm a die hard bond fan and of course i'm pissed that we still have 9 of them unrealeased, but I've come to terms that the hold up is likely a bargoning chip for potential buyers. whatever studio buys them is going to pay a hefty price, and of course they would get all home video rights, so MGM probabaly haulted the bond releases to make the sale look like a much better investment to potential buyers
Last i heard spyglass was close to making a deal which would see them purchase the studio and wipe all debts...did this deal wind up falling apart?
Here we go...everyone SHUTUP about bond.....I cant click on a damn mgm movie thread without seeing the same crap from the same whiney people who think mgm is actually listening. It will come out when mgm feels like spending the high dollars to properly master them all...until then just forget about it! Take the bond talk to the bond thread with the rest of the bondos!!!
Just because you don't like it is no reason to stand up and piss all over everyone's dinner. No, you should only do that if it's Goblin food and we'll turn into plants otherwise.
As everyone here probably already knows, MGM is in rough shape right now. I can't image how much money they pour into cleaning up the Bond films. Yea they would more than likely get the investment back from sales, but it's kind of hard to invest when you have nothing to invest with. Maybe they're thinking is that if they throw out these barebones catalog releases that they've been doing, it will earn them enough money to invest in the Bond films, which will hopefully earn them more money.
As for Troll 2, easily one of my favorite horrible movies. I have the DVD double feature with Troll 1, but I can see myself upgrading if the price is right (or if there's some interesting extras).
I believe all the restoration work on the Bond films is already complete (i've seen stills from OHMSS) and seeing as there hasn't been new extras on the previous bond blurays, just ported over stuff from the DVD's. I can't see the delay being a cost issue with MGM. They obviously have money to press new discs seeing as they have relased titles over the last bit
I still stand by my theory that they are holding back the releases (or rather the profit from the releases )to try and sway potential buyers of the studio. Whoever pays that much for MGM is going to want to start seeing profits pretty soon and it'll take a year at most to get the big productions up and going, so the answer is profits from MGM's back catelog and frankly the Bond home video sales are easily MGM's biggest profit source in terms of DVD
You mean you guys haven't heard about the Troll 2 blu-ray release before now? Yeah, this is the extended directors cut. It's been de-grained, de-noised, up-rezzed and color corrected. It also has enhanced special effects like lightsaber battles and a very nice war with the Ewoks on Endor! This is a definitive catalog title here people!!! So why are you all fuckin bitchin?
Alright KaiGusto, I'll shut up about the Bond movies, I just wanted to voice my unhappiness with this whole MGM situation (and yes, I know about their financial issues).
Haven't seen any Troll movies yet. Good for a rental and I would also love the rest of the Bond movies, but business is business. I'm sure it's far less expensive to go back and release other catalog titles like these kinds of B-level productions(Sorry about the Bond comment for those who are tired of hearing about the Bond movies).
"Here we go...everyone SHUTUP about bond.....I cant click on a damn mgm movie thread without seeing the same crap from the same whiney people who think mgm is actually listening. headcheese_bbg. So Bond aficionados are called bondos. What are people that like Dilbert called?
The delayed release of "Blood Simple" now makes sense. MGM needed the blanks to press as many copies of this classic as possible. I thought it was impossible to improve on the DVD of Toll 2, but, evidently, I was wrong...
George Lucas is a tool and has no place here on this thread. Maybe if you bondos want Blu-Ray releases of the old Bond films with Roger Moore and Sean Connery digitally replaced by Daniel Craig, then you have a point there about Lucas. Otherwise, he's not doing anyone any good by releasing his bastardized versions of the original 3 Star Wars films on Blu. You all need to just man up and tighten your belts a loop.
It's amazing how many people don't get the fact that MGM is in the process of selling off their catalog. MGM stands to make a hell of a lot more selling any titles that will do well on BD to another studio, rather than releasing titles themselves at this point. It takes money to remaster films in HD, produce bonus features and press the discs. Obviously the few horror titles that they are putting out for Halloween are things they were working on already and had laying around. Just quick titles to cash in on, that wouldn't be worth too much to anyone else... like the Bond catalog.
So instead of bitching about the Bond films and other "first rate" titles that MGM could be putting out, why not be patient and wait for things to get released the right way by someone else? For instance, Criterion is releasing Night of the Hunter on BD and I'm sure they'll do a hell of a better job than MGM can afford to do. I'm more curious as to why Pumpkinhead wasn't added to this wave of Halloween releases, considering the SE from a couple of years back was remastered in HD and Child's Play, released at the same time, has been out on BD for a while.
The rest of the 007's, the original Poseidon Adventure, Tora, Tora, Tora, Waking Ned Divine, A fish Called Wanda, THESE SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN THE BLU TREATMENT 1st! (hell, why did'nt Fox just add Surf II and made double special w/ cheese!)
I LOVE me some Troll 2. Actually I got to see it not too long ago in the theater at a film festival along with Best Worst Movie. It was a great double bill for sure.I was told it was one of the last actual film prints of the film. So I wonder how this gem is going to look on Blu. Also kind of funny Troll 2 has almost as much comments as the Avatar extended addition release thread.
A Troll 1 and 2 combo would make sense for this, like the DVD release. It's kind of odd having the sequel released without having the first one out on blu.
