Spider-Man 1 and 2 Get Separate Blu-ray Releases (Update)

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 for Blu-ray release on November 16. Until now, the first two Spidey movies were only available as part of the box set Spider-Man: The High Definition Trilogy, released in October 2007. Contrary to previous information, no additional special features will be included.
Going from the back cover information, Spider-Man will be totally devoid of extras, and Spider-Man will include Spider-Man 2.1, with additional footage and extended fight sequences not seen in the theater.
I didnt buy the trilogy for the main reason that the amazing extras from Spidey 2 wasnt included! (Maybe include the extras from the Extended Cut as well?)
Now if they would just re-release the trilogy with this stuff included id buy it! While Spidey 2 is the only one i really love, i still like the other two.
I hope they offer some kind of program for people, like me, who invested in the box set a while ago. I love the (Japanese) boxset layout and the movie themselves, but it's true that the lack of special features was a downer. So here's hoping they do something for us early adopters ...
I'm so glad I can finally nab these without Spider-Man 3, a movie so bad that it forced Sony to re-boot one of their most profitable franchises ever. Spider-Man 2, on the other hand, is still one of the best comic book movies yet made. In my opinion, of course. It's so much fun and my old DVD has suffered many repeat trips to the player. Excited to finally see these on BD.
I'm glad to finally see this happen. Like all the others, I didn't buy the trilogy bc I knew it came out before the times where several features added to BDs. I'm thrilled that both of these are 'pimped out', and my regret was trading in my lone Spiderman 3 Blu-ray to a used-CD/video game store this summer. But I hope it was for the best! And no, Spider Man 3 was not that bad as many say it was
Nothing on a new transfer. Guess we have to wait and see but I would think they would have said something about it. I like Spidey 3 and X-Men 3, nuff said.
I bought the UK version of the trilogy from an eBay seller, but the Spidey 1 & 2 discs wouldn't play on any of my equipment (edit: NOT region-related; the UK version is 100% region-free); I got a full refund and then mailed the discs to SPHE UK back in June for replacements, but never heard back from them. Was about to call them to see what happened (and maybe order the UK trilogy again), but if the stand-alone 1 & 2 have all the bonus features I might just buy them instead to go with the 2-disc Spidey 3 in my current UK trilogy, which works just fine. (I may even put 1 & 2 in the UK cases to keep them together as a trilogy.)
OTOH, I'm already near maxed-out on Amazon & potential TRU preorders in November anyway--Kwai, Sound of Music & TS3 all on the 2nd; Mutiny on the Bounty on the 16th, same day as these; Tyler Perry's first Why Did I Get Married? movie on the 23rd; and Fantasia on the 30th. (As to the oddball, I'm a longtime Janet Jackson fan--which only compounds things as she's in the cast of Perry's For Colored Girls..., hitting theaters also in November.) But then, another big expense (won't elaborate, but it's connected to my losing the PS3) will be gone after October, so I may be OK.
i hated Spider-man 3 the first time I watched it, but have ctually grown to really like it now that I have watched it at home a few times. I have the trilogy and if the transfer looks the same for both movies I don't think I will upgrade. I have all the special edition dvds filled with features and I have put my dvds inside my BD case with triple BD cases.
What am I talking about? I am a sucker for re-releases. I douple dipped all the time on DVD sometimes even for a single extra. hah then after I'd feel like an idiot.
Don't really care already have the same special features on the DVD. I've always thought this practice was lame. Release a title barebones then rerelease it later with special features. All of which will be in standard def ported from the DVD. Makes you second guess buying any Bluray for fear a better version will be released. I expect this from some publishers, but Sony?
Good to finally see these movies getting individual releases, considering Spiderman 3 was by far the worst one. I mean come on.... Venom always referred to himself as "I" instead of "we". How could you screw that one up?!? Too bad I already picked up the box set but I can't complain, got it on sale for $35 brand new. Figure these two films alone would cost me more than that if I got them separately so I think I did pretty good
Sweet, I also held off of the set because I already owned Spidey 3 (which by the way is fun too, I don't get why people have such a hate on for it, I actually enjoy it)
The first spiderman film is a fun superhero movie, it's slightly dated and it's "sam rami goofyness" shows more and more with each viewing, but I still enjoy it
Spiderman 2 is amazing, Still one of the best comic book movies and this is the one i really want on blu
Glad to see there will be extras, hopefully the PQ is worth the upgrade to blu
finally. I own the 3rd one and didn't want o get the bundle, looks like i waited for a good reason. I'll be getting these day one. I really likedd hte 2nd, i get the first one just cuz that way I'll have them all.
You know? I was probably the only one who waited for the first two films to come out separately because I only enjoyed the first one. The sequels weren't that good at all. I own them all (including the extended cut) on DVD and would have desire to only watch the first film over and over again. Unfortunately, I'm the only one who only liked the first film. Isn't that sad? >:o
I bought the BD set and kept my original DVDs of 1 & 2 because they had the special features. What's the point in having the special features on BD anyway if they are SD?
I wonder if they'll include the WTC teaser clip (preferably in HD). That'll make the first one a must buy for me. Otherwise I'll wait til it or the box set is super cheap.
I'll wait for the versions with Kirsten Dunst digitally removed from the movie:
One of the worst casting choices EVER, trumped only by that Gyllenhaal cow in "Dark Knight".
I held off buying the box set because the first two films has no special features. I hoped that this would change if they ever got separate releases so this is very disappointing. Now I have no reason to hold off buying it anymore, I'll get the box set while I see it at a good price (just under £18 on Amazon UK) and keep the bonus discs from my Spider-Man 1 and 2 DVDs.
@ChrisDilke: Yeah, I thought they had released a statement saying that special features would be included, was really tempted to double-dip these, but what I'm gonna end up doing, is buying cases that fit 3 discs, so that I can include the blu-ray and the two discs from the DVD edition for each 1 & 2 (I never owned 3 on DVD). EDIT: And yeah, buy it from AMZ UK, that's what I did, and have not have a problem playing the discs, in fact, they actually play no trailers or anything before the movie, a plus.
I agree with the other statements and saying that my intrest has dropped to zero.
I know that Sony is gonna re-release these when the reboot comes out. Warner did the same when Batman Begins came out right? Otherwise im keeping my old DVD's.
Just in case someone at Sony is reading: I just deleted both these releases from my preorder list. And all it took was a marketing decision on your company's part. Weird way to run a business.
Well, I don't want to upgrade until the blu-rays include enough features to make the DVDs obsolete. These obviously don't meet that criteria. There is a new Spider-Man movie in the works. So perhaps new editions are on the horizon, and these bare bone versions are just last minute cash-ins before the new versions come along. We'll see. I can wait a bit longer.
Hmm... The only question I have is did they revamp the picture and audio for one and two. Best picture and sound... I'll wait for the reviews. If the picture and audio have a slight improvement, I may re buy:3
I'm glad that they are finally getting released seprtly.
So, other than the WTC trailer that was never seen again, what was missing from the first film ???
I too, will wait until either A) I can get the current blu trilogy for ultra cheap, or B) wait until they improve the extra features on #1 & #2 before buying any of these.
PS. Can anyone tell me which version of #2 is on the trilogy ?!?
sonys website still shows spiderman as having special features on the standalone bluray, so until they update it taking off that info or someone has a review of the individual release of spiderman saying that really is the same disc as the boxset, I will keep my pre order in place. This wouldnt be the first time that a mock up of the front and back of cover art has not been acurate. thanks for the update though, as it does ensure that we will keep our eyes open for the possibilty that it really is devoid of special features.

Well, it seems you can cancel that pre-order now... :-(
I was actually hoping that the individual releases would contain bonus features and new transfers, I remember when the trilogy boxset came out, some DVD reviewers said that Spider-Man 1 was one of the worst Blu-Ray transfers created.
The Superbit DVDs of Spider-Man 1 & 2 already look and sound great.
