Iron Man 2 was hands down the top-selling title on Blu-ray during the week ended October 3, outselling runner-up Get Him to the Greek by 14 to 1. According to Nielsen VideoScan, a record 52% of the total disc sales of Iron Man 2 came from the Blu-ray editions (not including sales at Walmart).
According to the market research department of Home Media Magazine, Iron Man 2 sold an estimated 1.1 million discs (BD and DVD combined) during its first day in stores and 5 million in the first week.
Blu-ray sales revenue: $51.17 million (up 274.54% year on year)
Packaged-media sales revenue: $279.01 million (up 48.22% year on year)
Blu-ray market share: 18.3%
I'm surprised Superman/Batman: Apocalypse is selling well. DC animation really dropped the ball on that one and the film is probabaly the worst thing the usually great studio has done (OK maybe it's a little better then superman doomsday... but not by much)
Dark Knight is probabaly still selling well for three reasons
-it's price as dropped significantly (It's usually as low as 9.99)
-Any new comers to blu want a demo disc (not saying TDK is the best out there, but it's what people know)
-And finally, the movie is pretty freaking sweet. Who wouldn't want it in their collection?
IM2 outsold Get Him to the Greek 14 to 1. I knew IM2 would just completely dominate the sale. So based on the percentages for IM2, Get Him to the Greek sold about 185,000 copies on Blu for 2nd place.
Actually mvckalel, it has been Snow White and will be Beauty and The Best since only the Blu-ray combo pack was released first, then the DVD only 2 months later.
Not the first ever, but Home Media Magazine says it's the "first big fourth-quarter release ever to sell more copies on Blu-ray Disc than on DVD". So, it's still a big deal. *LOVE* seeing numbers pushing 50%. I think throwing a DVD copy in there on the new releases helps matters... honestly, I don't get why studios don't start doing combos only. Just do a BD/DVD set and be done with it.
I agree that IM2 was not quite as good as IM, but I still loved it-- saw it twice at the theater. No sophomore slump for the cast & crew. I hope the BD & DVD keeps selling very well.
Actually bfellow Get Him to the Greek sold 357,142 copies roughly. Iron man sold 5 million copies and outsold Get Him to the Greek by 14/1. So 5 million divided by 14. Very impressive Iron Man 2, great movie!!!
When we finally see movies like Get Him To The Greek, or films that are not "technical wonders" or demo discs (like Dark Knight, Avatar, Iron man ect) get to 50% it will be the great victory flag for the format.
In a year I'd like to see demo disc movies like this be in the mid 70's.
(Seems like the 5 million figure is for both the blu-ray and dvd releases, not just the blu-ray. So 5 million sales of both during the first week. 2.5+ million blu-rays. Not too shabby.)
Like everyone else, I liked Iron Man 2. Also, liked Get Him to the Greek. Pretty funny movie... I thought most people who didn't like it were too uptight.

We're both wrong and I was talking about BD copies. If we were doing 14/1 on combined DVD + BD then the 28% by Get Him it would be around 100,000 BD copies for Get Him to the Greek.
I wonder how many sales were for the dvd/blu-ray combo pack, and how many were for the 1-disc blu-ray release. I'm actually curious to know which packages sell more. I think the combo pack will sell more for iron man 2 b/c of the additional special features, but if not for that I wonder if the non-combo pack would sell more.
