Paramount Home Entertainment has announced the Dreamworks Animation movie Shrek Forever After for Blu-ray release on December 7. On the same date, the studio will also release Shrek: The Whole Story, a gift set including all four Shrek movies.
Special features on Shrek Forever After include a "12 Days of Christmas" pop-up book, deleted scenes, interactive games, a preview of "Shrek the Musical" and an insider's look at the film.
For a limited time, both Shrek Forever After and Shrek: The Whole Story will also include a new holiday program, Donkey's Christmas Shrektacular, featuring all the characters from the franchise singing classic holiday songs with Shrek-ized lyrics, as well as the "Shrek's Yule Log" - a virtual fireplace with appearances by more than 25 Shrek characters.
At the moment the studio has not revealed any plans to release Shrek or Shrek 2 on Blu-ray separately. Shrek the Third was released on Blu-ray in September 2008.
A 3D Blu-ray edition of the movie will be offered exclusively to buyers of Samsung 3D hardware (see Blu-ray.com, September 17).
It's about time the first 2 movies got released. Yeah, people not planning to buy the whole set will apparently have to wait for individual releases, which sucks. But at least we know they'll inevitably be coming now. I'll just get the set since I'm a sucker for complete franchises. (Yep, I'm the guy who buys all those direct-to-video sequels out there. I'm weak.)
While usually the Dreamworks animation releases are overshadowed by the yearly Pixar offering, this fourth Shrek outing will now have to contend with being that third animated movie of summer 2010 (after the amazing Despicable Me). Personally, I barely enjoyed Shrek: The Final Chapter (saying it's better than the third one is not exactly a good thing). Now that the Shrek franchise has been milked dry, hopefully Dreamworks will focus on more original fare (How to Train Your Dragon).
While I enjoyed Shrek 4 it was painfully obvious watching a 2D showing that a lot of the movie was designed just for 3D "effect". The entire witches broom chase sequence felt pointless and really unnecessary in 2D.
Been waiting for 1 & 2 for a long time. Shrek the 3rd sucked. I haven't seen Forever After yet but I just hope it's better than 3. I guess I'll have to get the whole set anyway.
You know, studios think bundling movies into an expensive box set encourages people to deal with 2 or 3 crappy movies, just for the one they like...but really it only encourages people to download the 1 good movie instead.
I'll definitely get this even though I sorta disliked the 3rd and haven't even seen the 4th. Love the first 2 & the price isn't that bad, plus I love my box sets.
Personally I didn't find Shrek the Third all that bad. And I for one and glad Shrek the Halls wasn't included as for me it was absolutely horrid. Not to mention, I wouldn't want a fifth show added to the collection thus making the pack even more expensive.
So Shrek the 3rd becomes a paperweight since 1 and 2 won't be avail separately and the option is to get the whole collection and effectively have a duplicate of the 3rd - maybe there's a children's hospital or library that wants a copy. Great job Dreamworks, good thinking. Way to alienate your buying audience.
Shrek the Halls - is that included? If not, more kudos for Dreamworks. Can't they get anything right? Why the slow trickle of catalog releases onto blu-ray?
I might rent "Shrek Forever After" at Redbox or Netflix and if I like it pick it up, but I only really care about getting the first two movies on Blu. Hopefully individual releases are coming soon.
@SethRex, the Shrek films have ALWAYS been available in widescreen on DVD. I specifically remember the first film had the film in 1.33:1 on disc 1 and 1.78:1 on disc 2. Don't take my word for it, search Amazon.
If you screwed up and got the wrong version, that's on you.
This is exciting news...now the wait begins to get the first film on its own...because as enjoyable as the other movies were...the first one is the only one I really have enjoyed again and again.
isn't there supposedly a shrek 5 coming out in 2013? it wouldn't be The Whole Story then.. lol never liked Shrek, only liked Shrek The Halls, they should've put that on Blu-ray and put it in the collection
i hope its everything so I can get rid of the DVDs including the story so far bonus disc and Shrek 3-D movie which are the only ones and the case I kept getting rid of the blasphemous full screen editions luckily having the wide screen versions already.
@kevin87 - No, five films were planned, but the fifth was later cancelled and Shrek Forever After is the final part of the story. There is, however, a spin-off featuring just Puss in Boots coming out in 2011.
I will wait for the 3D release, how can I get it; have already bought the Samsung TV and player, why can't I be able to buy into the Smasung exclusives???
Yes finally, Ive been waiting to hear when the shrek series would be coming to blu-ray. I actually really liked Shrek the final chapter as much as the first one and slightly better than Shrek 2. Shrek 4 and despicable Me were my favorite movies of the summer.
I plan to buy the complete set for sure. I'm glad I never did buy the 3rd one on Blu-Ray (which IMO was the worst of the series, the 4th one was surprisingly better than I expected it to be), now I can just get the whole set. I do hope each movie comes in it's own case, but I'll buy it regardless of the type of packaging. Right now the preorder price on Amazon is $55.99 for the set, which is really good for 4 movies.
I do hope that the "Shrek the Halls" Christmas Special (which was released by itself on DVD) is included in this set as well. It wouldn't quite be "complete" without it, and considering that they are including some limited time Christmas related extras on it, it would be kind of silly not to include that special.

It's too bad Shrek 3's in there, really puts a damper on the series and makes me not want to buy it. It's like the Rocky 5 of Shreks.

Or like Alien Resurrection to the Alien franchise.
pretty good price $45, but I will wait till it's cheaper, the "problem" with Shrek 1 is that it is so watchable in any medium, tv or regular DVD that it's watched a lot and the "need" to want it in HD is lessened....does that make any sense?
