Sharp Introduces New Blu-ray Recorders in Japan

Posted September 26, 2007 08:13 AM by Josh Dreuth

Blu-ray Disc Sharp has introduced three new lines of Blu-ray recorders for the Japanese market, all due on store shelves before the end of the year. The BD-HDW will be released in two versions - the HDW15 (with a 500GB hard drive) and HDW30 (with an industry leading 1TB hard drive). Both will feature digital and analog tuners, quick-start (less than 1s), gold plated HDMI ports, and support for Dolby TrueHD. The BD-HDW15 and BD-HDW30 are expected to ship December 1st.

The BD-AV10 will come in the choice of four colors (black, white, red, and silver) and have support for BD-RE v2.1 at up to two layers. The BD-AV1 also has support for BD-RE v2.1, but will only support writing to one layer. Additionally, the BD-AV1 will only come in three color choices (black, white, and red). The BD-AV10 and BD-AV1 are expected to ship on October 27th. Neither of the models will have an internal hard drive, but both will have digital tuners.

No pricing has been set for any of the recorders at this time.

Great.
But when will these recorders start being released to the rest of the world?
I know that Blu-ray has 90% of the Hi Def market in Japan, but maybe if they were more available
Blu-ray would make a
serious push worldwide.

May the Blu be with you...

This will make 100% blu-ray in Japan but what about the rest of the world it would really help alot in the format war!

I noticed that the Samsung BD-P1400 is anywhere from $420 to $499 in the USA.
It's almost available in Canada and stores are starting to say it'll be selling for $599!
Why such a price difference do you think? The Canadian dollar is on par with the US dollar.
Anyways... sucks when they pull stuff like that.

Why does this site even bother posting what the Japanese market is getting? We can barely even get a second generation Blu-Ray PLAYER in the U.S.!

We probably won't even have a chance of seeing a Blu-Ray RECORDER in the U.S. until 2010, probably later. And even then it won't happen unless it's embedded in Play Station 4.

Talk about rubbing our face in how backwater a market the U.S. is ... sheesh.
