Original Tron Remastered for Blu-ray

Posted November 5, 2010 07:12 AM by Juan Calonge

Walt Disney StudiosDuring a recent interview, Tron director Steven Lisberger said that he has just spent six weeks remastering the movie for Blu-ray and performing subtle tweaks. As to the actual release date, Lisberger didn't give any specifics as it is up to the studio, but he said that it would be "sooner rather than later."

Earlier this year, this title had been rumored to be coming out in November, a month ahead of the theatrical release of its sequel Tron Legacy. Now it seems likelier that it will be tied in to the home video release (like the Fantasia 2 Movie Collection and The Sorcerer's Apprentice).

TRON Director Steve Lisberger Says He Just Spent 6 Weeks Remastering TRON for its Blu-ray Release! And he Made Some Changes.... from ColliderVideos on Vimeo.

I was hoping it would be released before Legacy hit theaters! So long as it's released alongside the Legacy Blu-ray, I don't think me and Disney will have any issue!

God forbid they delay it till next Christmas... They shall feel my wrath if that happens!

Honestly, I don't understand the decision behind a tie-in release with the Blu release of Tron: Legacy (if it turns out to be the case). I, for one, have never seen the original Tron (and I know a lot of people who have not seen it as well) and it would be a great opportunity to discover it for the first time in Disney Blu-ray Hi-Def (no, I don't work for Disney, but couldn't resist the urge). Plus, while Sorcerer's apprentice was based on one of the shorts from Fantasia, in Tron's case, it's a sequel affair, and the original's availability will directly influence Legacy's box office numbers.

I heard Disney is delaying the original Tron on blu ray because they don't want the young generation to see it and think it looks bad from the outdated CGI and then not see Legacy based on what they saw from the original Tron.

I read Disney freaked out because they held a screening of the original film and the whole audience was laughing the whole time.
so they decided they didn't want a bd release at the same time of the new film coming out in theaters.
It will be released next Spring when the "new" film hits bd.

It sounded to me that the 'tweaks' he spoke of were related to the 'glow' effect through the film. Doesn't sound like anything new in terms of footage will make it into the bd. But I guess we'll have to wait and see. I'll pick this up for sure!

Well, that's just stupid. Of course the new film is going to look better and more updated than the original, not only was it made in 1980, BUT IT TAKES PLACE IN 1980!! If an audience can't grasp that and understand that, yes, naturally a film made about a gaming world 30 years after the original came out is going to look more updated and polished, then, sorry, you're not part of the target audience.

Never saw the original, and the sequel looks interesting, so I decided to Netflix the original and see it before the new one comes out. Unfortunately, Netflix doesn't carry it (it's in the "saved" section). So I went to Amazon to see if I could pick up a cheap copy: it's out of print. Cheapest I could find was a used copy for around $20, which is more than I was willing to blind purchase for a DVD. My final hope is to see if Blockbuster is renting it: otherwise, looks like I won't get to see it before the sequel comes out.

I watched the original from Netflix about 6 months ago. However, as Toasterlad said, the original is no longer available Netflix . . . either Disney doesn't want anyone to watch the original first, or Netflix is removing it from their catalog just like they always do shortly before a movie is going to be re-released. This happened to me with Land of the Lost. I was re-watching the originals I remember as a kid. Then, they decided to re-release the originals with the movie. Mid-series, Netflix said the discs in my queue were no longer available. This was about 1-2 months before the re-release, so I'm hopeful this means Tron is coming soon too.

When a popular title is out-of-print, the copies at Netflix tend to get "lost" (read: stolen) pretty quickly. That's why it's gone from Netflix.

I'm in. I have it on VHS and am looking forward to upgrading to Blu. What is unique about this film is that it personifies software (programs are depicted as people). To my knowledge, this has not been done before, nor since this movie.

While I would like to see the sequel, I suspect it won't have the panache of the original. No, it didn't have the quality of special effects of today, but you have to understand that 1980 was the year the first IBM PC hit the streets. It had 64 Kilobytes of RAM (not Megabytes, not Gigabytes, Kilobytes), 2 floppy drives (no hard disc), no graphics, no color, 320x200 video, no mouse, no networking (well, there was an Internet, but no World Wide Web, so only the military and scientists had it). That's why all the computers in the film are terminals connected to the mainframe. The MCP had to use phone lines to get into other mainframes.

TRace ON: A utility program used by early programmers to monitor what a program in development is doing. Used for debugging. The reciprocal function is TRace OFF (TRON/TROFF).

Anyway, I think the tweaks will be like he said, color balance, spit and polish type of stuff. For those of you who have not seen it, I hope you will enjoy it as much as I do.

Steven Lisberger: There's a household name that rolls off the tongue.
Nice "body of work" Steven.
"Tron" was never a great movie, pretty good at best. The dialog is dumber than "Phantom Menace".
I'd buy it on blu-ray for $7 if I didn't already have the deluxe laserdisc.

First off, TRON refers to Electronic and not to the tron command used in Basic programming. This has already been clarified by the filmmakers. Second, TRON has the merit of being the first true attempt to use computer-based graphical effects, and regardless of its visible limitations, it was still a rewarding experiment.

I am not sure what is the meaning of the word "original" in the title of this news. As far as I know there was never a second version or a director's cut. I saw its theatrical release and that was exactly what was shown in the DVD.

It has been only natural for directors to do some extensive clean-up for Blu-Ray. They've done it for a lot of older films, and the results are usually worth the effort!

Good grief...is it too much to ask to just leave the darn thing ALONE?! I'm so sick and tired of the revisionist tendencies being displayed by certain directors nowadays. I don't want to watch the original "Tron" revised and perfected...I want to watch the film the way it appeared in theaters back in 1982, imperfections and blemishes intact. Please Mr. Lisberger, can we just have the film the way it looked originally?

QUOTE--I heard Disney is delaying the original Tron on blu ray because they don't want the young generation to see it and think it looks bad from the outdated CGI and then not see Legacy based on what they saw from the original Tron.--END QUOTE

Ok check your history...Tron was NOT a blockbuster. But the film HAS a Major fan base.....And a few folks at Pixar (John Lasseter) site the film as a major influence.....Still....I was never lucky enough to see the film in a theater as a kid. But to me the local video store had the only two films i would ever need to shape who I am today. I would rent "Star Wars" and "Tron" and that was all I wanted/needed from my local rental store..and i would do so for the majority of my childhood.....The worst part was waiting for my sister to finish watching HER alternate titles "Grease" & "Grease 2"...

Still... I think I smell a slight Lucas "conspiracy" here...(Hence the long wait till the original Tron nerds breed and they will bring their offspring)and as an added bonu$...& film it in 3-D to maximise the aging/new nerd dollar....

Which is true, Ive got my 11 year old son psyched to see the film (By the way he loves the original film)

Please dont get me wrong , I hope the film is amazing...I want the film to be all I hope for.....

But I was one of those idiots who sat online for 7 hours for Phantom menace tickets.....

Brownd,

Thanks for trying to elucidate the mystery. I presume that there isn't much to alter in the theatrical release. If they do alter it won't change much if the plot, I gather.

One must remember that Tron was shot in 65 mm and 35 mm VistaVision. Thus, I have all the reasons to believe that it will look terrific on Blu, regardless of the trouble the filmmakers had with inconsistencies in the film stock and lab work.

That's what probably Disney is working on. I would, nevertheless take it on Blu-Ray as it is, let alone with visual improvements!

And last, may I remind you all that the soundtrack contains an elaborate work done by Wendy Carlos, which is a treat for Moog and vintage electronic music fans. Given that Blu-Ray has excelled on audio quality I am hoping for one of the best sounding discs recently made.

A blu release of TRON before the sequel should not have been a gamble for Disney. The company should not worry about TRON ruining the buzz for Legacy. The stunning effects, along with Jeff Bridges and Bruce Boxleitner appearing as supporting characters for the old school and the die hard crowd are gonna pack houses. Disney worrying about TRON's camp value for it's sleeker, upgraded PS3 sequel is like DC worrying about the camp value of 66 Batman ruining the core character for the younger generation when clearly there is a demand for it's release. It's just plain silly.

I haven't seen the original since my DVD rotted (a Disney DVD suffering from rot, yeah go figure) and it would have been nice to see it upgraded to and available before TRON: Legacy to further boost my already budding excitment for the sequel. Even if the original 82 visuals would look cartoony and campy by comparison it reflects the Atari era very nicely.

I saw the preview of Tron Legacy at the theater. I am also one of the people who saw TRON at the theater when it was first released (I was also one of the people who would go to the local arcade regularly and set the High Score record on all their favorite arcade games). I loved TRON naturally but thought a couple parts were kind of dumb (as one would expect from anything Disney produces). When the TRON games hit the arcades I was in Nirvana. But I digress....

My impression of Tron Legacy could be summed up like this from what I saw..."Tron Legacy is sort of like the 'Fast and Furious' movies but on motorcycles"...not very promising in my opinion but I will go see it just the same. It will likely be all special effects and explosions like most action movies are these days.

Off topic, the PC game "TRON 2.0" is so much like the original movie you actually feel like you're in it.

So, according to that blog report, Tron the original film and Tron Legacy are not the same, after all. As to the reaction of Disney's execs, if all that speech is really true, it shows the inability to convey the message to the audience showing that Tron was a pioneer work for CGI and will evidence the medium's limitations during that period!

If they base on those people's reaction the decision for not to release Tron any time soon on Blu-Ray this is will surely be the greatest display of marketing incompetence of the year. Personally, I don't believe that the Disney folks will get to that level!

ajmrowland: I saw my share of Disney movies. There are a few that are good but by and large I think Disney has a tendency to put a weird warp on the perception of life. I do not like how they take classic stories and utterly destroy them to make them attractive to children.

A good example is "The Hunchback of Notre Dame". Any child who sees that movie first will have it as their first impression and will compare the original against it which is backwards. I think this is just plain wrong. Some things should be left alone.

"Pocahontas" is another. The woman is portrayed as some sort of beautiful forest princess in the movie but in reality she was taken to England where she died of disease she had no immunity against. But that's not in the movie is it?

I also don't think it's wise to anthropomorphize animals (and other objects) for the sake of the kiddy market. It's another distortion of reality that we all could do without. The natural world is already being destroyed by human beings at an incredible rate (no I'm not a tree hugger...it's just a fact that this is really happening). Making animals out to be "people" is just another mental rape of a child's developing mind and sets them up for a rude awakening if they ever get the chance to experience the same animals in reality.

Others may or may not care. So be it. Personally I find the whole thing tragic and disgusting.

Wow. If your kids lack the ability to distinguish fantasy from reality, I'm sorry. The 4 year old I know has no trouble at all telling the difference between the talking raccoon on Dr. Dolittle and the 'dangerous' ones in the backyard.

I, for one, will continue to raise children based on the research of many Ph.D child development specialists who consider imaginative play essential for healthy development rather than your opinion of mind-raping.

The whole point of classics going into the public domain is so that they can be adapted by future generations. If you prefer the original fiction stories to the new ones, that's fine, but don't tell me that watching Disney's version first is wrong. It is different, but it is not wrong.

Many movies and stories are based on fantasy, some requiring more suspension of disbelief more than others. I, for one, prefer reality-distorted fantasy movies such as Tron over documentaries for entertainment.
