Specialty UK label Shameless Screen Entertainment has announced that it is going to start releasing titles on Blu-ray. Its first release will be Lucio Fulci's The New York Ripper, which is set to come out on BD in February 2011. There is no information regarding technical specifications or special features at this time.
Note that in the UK, The New York Ripper had to be cut to remove sexualized violence in order to secure an "18" rating. Shameless has said that it intends to resubmit the film to the British Board of Film Classification requesting that cuts be waived.
As the Blue Underground Blu is region free I can't see why they would bother especially as they don't really have a chance of getting this through the BBFC completely uncut. Or maybe i'm wrong?
I've never understood peoples' love for this movie. It's one of the worst Fulci ever did (followed closely by House by the Cemetery), with a killer that is more annoying than menacing and idiot characters filling the screen. The only thing really good about the movie is the seamless transition between New York exterior shots and interiors shot in Italy. And as already mentioned, if anyone in the UK wanted a quality copy, they'd likely import the Blue Underground version. For the distributors, why not focus on something by Fulci that showcases his talents as a filmmaker... The Beyond, Zombie, Cat in the Brain, or even better his spaghetti westerns rather than garbage like New York Ripper.
i sure hope its fully uncut, but if not, then ill be happy with my usa copy. would be nice to see shameless release the already dvd giallos in bluray,in time i guess.
