Spielberg Spokesperson: Universal Japan HD DVD Announcement was "A Mistake"

Posted October 8, 2007 02:18 PM by Ben Williams

Blu-ray.com Marvin Levy, spokesperson for Steven Spielberg, was kind enough to speak with us today regarding the recent surprise announcement from Universal Home Video Japan that Jaws, E.T., Jurassic Park and Back to the Future would be released on HD DVD.

According to Mr. Levy, "There are no plans to release these titles on HD DVD. It was a mistake and someone inadvertently put those titles into a presentation"

Mr. Levy also mentioned that Universal will be making a public statement regarding this mistake in the coming days.

Blu-ray.com would like to thank Mr. Levy for again speaking with us regarding Mr. Speilberg's films and their future in the world of high definition media.

This is the second time Spielberg titles have been used without his permission to promote HD-DVD. Probably not the best way to try and make up for it, and have any hope of Spielberg's titles being seen on HD-DVD.

Here we go again! Seems as though Uni is trying some serious desparation moves to sway the public. I could say more, but I will leave it at that.

I love how quckly this "news" spread, even though we all suspected it was crap. Sad that HD DVD is so desperate now that they have to pin their feeble hopes on misinformation about what may or may not be coming to the format in Japan! LOL

I suggest you all go buy Close Encounters in BD when it comes out to show Spielberg our token of appreciation. I already pre-ordered mine ;o)

This is coming from the horse mouth. (Pretty close) Why would he want to produce his films in HD-DVD its only 5% of the market in Japan. Steven Spielberg - Spirit of Truth Blu-Ray Knight

I think that slide was showing what could have happened if only HD DVD survived the coming holiday
season which everyone knows is just not possible.

It was like a look what could have been if only we had a chance type slide.

Again? LOL... They should just release those movies on BD just to spite the HD DVD Group for "announcing" those titles for a second time.

Wow, this is the 2nd time now, he ain't happy I am sure, being used like that. This news made it all over the internet and was talk at every web site. Personally, I didn't believe it, Spielberg, I believe, would release in both formats, blu-ray only, or nothing. His comments have mirrored that-which is why it surprises me that he allowed Dreamworks to go with just the one format which is not his choice. This shows desparation on the hd-dvd side, don't they realize this?

Perhaps Toshiba and Microsoft can pay Spielberg $150 million to make him roll over.
