Heavy Metal Blu-ray Resurfaces - As Best Buy Exclusive

Posted January 20, 2011 07:48 AM by Juan Calonge

Sony PicturesApparently today is Retailer Exclusivity Day. Sony Pictures' animated cult movie Heavy Metal, initially announced for Blu-ray release on January 25 and later cancelled (see Blu-ray.com, November 15 and December 6, 2010), is now available for preorder exclusively at Best Buy, with a release date of February 1.

Thanks to forum members "PowellPressburger" and "dugnarug."

I wasn't the one who found the news item, I think McCrutchy was. :-)

I figured this would happen, well at least it's possible to buy now, guess I'll have to make a trip to best Buy soon

Pre-ordered. I won't give up my old VHS (no, that's no misprint) boot though as I suspect the soundtrack will be changed due to licensing issues.

Awesome dudes! One of, if not, the best animated film to come out of the 80s! Great soundtrack too, which I just recently picked up! Steelbook would be a nice, but hoping for at least a great Sony transfer and lossless audio. Anyone know if it was restored or what work went into bringing this one to Blu?

Wonder if this will be exclusive to Best Buy USA like Anchorman was or if we will see it in Canada as well... I really hate these retailer exclusives.

I am going to wait for a review. Awesome movie, but I am curious if the print is cleaned up.

I look forward to buying it again! (vhs, laserdisc, dvd, superbit dvd, and finally blu!)

Well, this is no good; as usual, Best Buy exclusives are not available here in Canada and Best Buy US won't ship to Canada. I really hate Best Buy; they suck

Any word on the bonus features?

How long do these retail exclusives usually last? I really despise this exclusivity.

I agree with most people, they need to stop these exclusives so that they are available to everyone.

thats sort the way we here in the us feel about those futureshop exclusives in canada.

@backgroundactorman
At least the Future Shop exclusives are all for movies that are available everywhere so you can still get the movie. You get a steelbook at FS; but in the case of Heavy Metal (and Anchorman before that) these movies aren't available elsewhere and that really sucks. We'll probably have to wait three to six months for it to be available at all retailers...

At least you guys get the friggin movie. Even if you don't get those "exclusive" steelbooks, at least you get the amaray. We're stuck without the movie until a later release date.

Along with Sleepy Hollow, the Heavy Metal DVD looks fantastic when upscaled on a Bluray player. Probably in my top 5 of best upconverted discs in my collection.

"Pre-ordered. The price is right, too!"

Of course, one never knows how cheap it might have been if it wasn't an exclusive.

For those who aske about the canadian branches, I bouth the green miles while it was an exclusive at Best Buy so you can still hope that later the title could be availaible within a couple of weeks.

Preordered, too much to hope for a steelbook? Would seem to make sense given the namesake..

robetclo2516: Heavy Metal is featured in the canadian bestbuy flyers for feb. 1 release.

Is the soundtrack intact?
