This week, Amazon is offering Doctor Who: The Complete Specials for $25.99 (57% off MSRP). The price tracker shows that is the lowest that this five-disc set has been since its release a year ago. This offer is valid through February 25.
It's a great price for a good set, but an odd choice for "Blu-ray Deal of the Week". I can only recommend this particular set to preexisting fans of the series. Why did they have Torchwood S1, S2, and Children of Earth on sale last week, but this week only The Specials and not The Complete Fifth Series? I could at least recommend Series 5 to people unfamiliar with Doctor Who, because it's a fresh start and you don't need any previous knowledge of what happened in the show to enjoy it. What gives, Amazon? Maybe next week. Bottom line, if you're already a fan of Doctor Who, and David Tennant as the Doctor, this is worth picking up.
i started Doctor Who with the series 5 blu-ray...i had never seen any of the previous seasons or Torchwood. And I was hooked, and I really had no trouble getting into it or understanding.
Since then, I've caught up on all Doctor Who and Torchwood, but series 5 is what got me started. I recommend to anyone intrigued by Who, but hasn't seen any of it, to start with series 5. Matt Smith is phenomenal as the Doctor, and in my eyes ahead of David Tennant. They are different though...tough to judge. However, honestly do not start with series 1, as the guy who played the Doctor in that series was very weak and you may be turned off to the entire series. If you are intrigued, start with series 5 or this one, the only 2 Doctor Who's available on Blu.
