Meijer Supports Blu-ray Online

Posted October 17, 2007 08:11 AM by Josh Dreuth

Blu-ray Movies Meijer has announced that they will no longer be selling HD DVD titles via their online store. This decision comes after an internal review showed Blu-ray titles outselling HD DVD titles 4-to-1. Meijer has also expanded their Blu-ray online offerings to 300 titles, nearly the entire Blu-ray catalog. While they don't rule out adding HD DVD titles back at some point, consumer spending currently doesn't warrant them stocking the items.

It's basically an upscaled Wal-Mart... a step above Target.

As I said before it will be the stores that will play a major part in this war. If you can't buy the discs you can't win. Period!!
Target has made more space for Blu-ray, so Blu-ray keeps chipping away. Sooner or later the tree will fall.

Disney/Pixar also need to pick up the pace and start releasing more of the their back titles, these would be very popular.

May the Blu be with you...

I have 3 of these stores in my area (Northern Indiana) and they only stock 1 rack of Blus right now, but since HDDVD is going away, that means they'll have room for 1 more :P

Also, as tru blu pointed out, target has made more space, and the Best Buy in our area now has 4 racks of blu and 2 racks of HDDVD, where as a week ago they had 2 of each.

a lot of people still buy at the real stores, so it's nice to see that many of them are ditching the HDDVD

VC 1 and Dolby digital, that's it. HD DVD has ruined so many movies now it's making me upset. Everything released in HD DVD is not going to be Remastered anytime soon, so we'll all have to re-buy them again when they have been Remastered using Less compression with AVC and a 7.1 PCM Soundtrack.

HD DVD is not even close to being as good as Blu-ray. All were talking about is data storage in reality. The one with the higher storage capacity is capable of better Audio and Video period. The more you can put on a disc the better it is. That's the bottom line. Current HD DVD can store a max of 30GB, and Blu-ray can store a max of 100GB. HD video requires a bit rate of 19.4 gb/s. That means a 135 minute movie requires 19.4GB of storage. To give you an example of why HD DVD is not better, you may have noticed that the new Transformers movie not VC 1 but Mpeg 4 AVC. The reason they had to use AVC was because they needed a more efficient compression technology than VC 1 to fit Transformers on to one disc. You will also notice that the audio track is only Dolby 5.1 sound in French and English only. The reason is that's all the room they had left on the disc. The extra features are also on a separate disc because there was no room to have everything on one disc. Now there is nothing wrong with Mpeg 4 AVC, it is simply a more advanced and more inefficient compression technology and because its compression ratios are variable unlike VC 1 and mpeg 2 it is capable of far superior or poor picture quality depending on how much compression is used. The only reason HD DVD is using VC 1, which is almost extractly the same as mpeg 2, was to get Microsoft’s support. If they didn't, Microsoft would have gone with Blu-ray. Microsoft wanted the licensing fees. You will also notice that most Blu-ray moves have 7.1 channels of uncompressed PCM soundtrack which is greatly superior to Dolby true digital and DTS Master Sound. PCM requires 5 times the storage space. You see, it all comes down to how much the disc can store and Blu-ray has a huge advantage over HD DVD in storage which translates to better video and sound with far greater potential. Even the price advantage currently enjoyed by HD DVD will soon disappear. I saw Transformers on HD DVD and I was disapointed becuase they clearly had to use a higher compression level on HD DVD than they would have had to on Blu-ray, and it only has a Dolby 5.1 soundtrack. All the extras are on a separate disc. Transformers would have been better on Blu-ray no doubt. Cheers,

They are primarily based in Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana, and perhaps parts of Penn. Been around for a long time, way before wal-marts. Not a huge national/worldwide impact, but a blow nontheless!!!

Just thought I'd have a look at the Meijer site. Clicked on the Blu-Ray link and my Firefox died! Clearly the work of a disgruntled HD-DUDer who has tampered with the site! :-)
