Blu-ray has set a new record for market share in any given week by accounting for over a
quarter of all packaged media sales according to Home Media Research. The top selling Blu-
ray was Tron: Legacy which managed to garner a massive 68% of sales on the format
outselling the DVD at a 2:1 ratio. The sales of the 3D version are rolled into the title, but no sales split has been given for 2D/3D.
UPDATE: Due to a mixup we used an older picture, the sales for this week actually broke last week's record! The article has been edited to reflect the new information from Home Media Magazine.
Very good news.
Is their any way to find out the Blu-ray/DVD sales info of titles in the UK and other countries aswell, as im curious as to what the percentages would be elsewhere around the world?
Here's what blu-ray has done it's short lifespan:
1) Quickly dispatched a rival format
2) Continuously sets sales high marks in one of the worst economies on record
3) All while been competing with DVD
That's pretty impressive!
BD did not have the "perfect storm" of events that dvd did when it was introduced:
1) Had no rival format
2) Was a HUGE upgrade over VHS
3) During the highpoint of the "dot.com" era...ie great economy
I've said it before and will say it again: Blu-ray has done so much more, with LESS, than DVD ever did!
Kudos proud blu-ray owners, a job well done!
Wow! This is astounding!
A water-mark week for Blu-ray, to be sure. Hopefully this trend can continue; it's good to see Blu is finally a mass-market media (according to economists' stats, in order for it to be mass-market, it has to account for 25% of all disc-based film sales).
I think the smartest thing that distributors have done is bundle DVDs with Blu-rays. It lets people without Blu-ray invest in the product without owning a Blu-ray player yet. A person can start upgrading their video collection while saving up for the Blu-ray player they want and still watch the DVD copy in the meantime.
Nice, but since every Tron:Legacy package came with a DVD, you could look at it like DVD sold 100% share if you really wanted to, right? But yeah watched it a couple days after release, very nice. As was the original. Worth the wait.
That means by this time in next year (April 2012), DVD sales will have dropped at least ANOTHER 44%, bringing the total DVD sales down 88% from (April 2010). DVD movies will be gone from the mainstream by 2014. Let Blu-ray live on!
It's Blu-ray or nothing baby!!!! Tron at 68% of total sales, WOW!!!!! DVD might as well kiss the kids good night , cause it's past there bed time!!!!!! Hahahahahaha :-)
With Harry Potter and Incredibles, should be nice seeing the sales for that. Also awesome to see Blu on the rise, still. I can only imagine how those numbers are going to be when Star Wars kicks off late quarter 3, early quarter 4.
@Atreyuu2003 The DVD is considered a bonus just like the digital copy. Consumers with no intention of buying blu ray would not buy the combo pack and just go straight to the dvd. People who buy the combo packs either have a blu ray player or intends to buy a blu ray player in the future. Also as soon as DVD sales plummet greatly, studios will not offer Blu ray combo packs anymore. Also companies will want to take out the DVD as soon as possible because blu ray gives them a greater profit margin.
With blu ray picture and sound quality, why would you buy a DVD? I still own some but when im looking to buy a new movie, my first question is, how does it look on blu ray, not how does it look on DVD. I've been spoiled. I don't have to stop the movie to look at the menu. Greatest thing since sliced bread. LOL i always wanted to use that phrase.
There is a really scary factoid that everyone seems to be skipping. Yes Blu-ray is growing and growing, but the total media sold was down 36% this week with three pretty big titles being released, not a good sign for prices of future releases
I'm confused. The first paragraph says new Tron set a sales record with 68% on Blu. The next paragraph says old Tron sold 78% on Blu. 78% > 68% isn't it? Does there have to be a certain amount of sales for it to count or something?
rickah88- correction on your little list, DVD had a rival format, it was called Divx. and not to split hairs, but Warner Bros (and to some extent fox) decided the format war for us, not Blu-ray. The scary thing is, they had planned to go HD DVD (with Fox in tow) but the deal fell through during the last round of talks. We were very close to having HD DVD as the chosen format. Glad it didn't happen that way, but it's not all rose tinted glasses of easy conquests for the blu-ray format. Maybe this isn't common knowledge?
I think it pays more respect to the format to acknowledge the troubles it has had and still overcome than to draw a cartoon super-hero image of it.
I'm with Ralfeminiem. Did everyone miss the fact that total package media sales are down 35.94%? Yes, Blu-ray has a larger piece, but that's not such a great thing if it's a larger piece of a shrinking market.
Well the revenue shrink is on the DVD end. Blu-ray revenue is up 20% from last year.
Yes fewer people are buying "discs". But more blu-rays are being sold. So really people are buying fewer dvds, but more blu-rays. It's too bad that people are not just simply spending the same amount and switching to blu-ray. But at least revenue for blu-ray is up, which might make studios consider investing into more catalog titles as they see DVD revenue shrinking.
Love Blu, hope it sticks around for a long time (streaming = BLAH!)...but you can't discount combo packs. It absolutely makes a difference. If you can buy a DVD for $17 or a Blu+DVD+Dig Copy for $18-$20, many people are going to buy the latter (sometimes the combo pack is even the same or cheaper!). Ditto for 3D combo packs. Even those who don't have 3D viewing at home will buy a 3D combo pack if it's not a lot more in price ("Tangled" anyone?). I almost bought the 3D "Hubble" b/c it was only $5 more ($5 for a 3D B-r is cheap). I just don't see myself doing 3D anytime soon, so I didn't buy it.
Cloud computing and streaming media are the future of the flim industry. Eventually, I'll move my BD and DVD libraries to a media server for immediate access. However, for backup purposes I will always want some kind of tangible media to store my movies on, and since I prefer HD media I'll continue to have a use for BD.
Before anyone misinterprets my comment, I want to say I am a huge Blu-ray enthusiast (simply put: why not watch something the best possible way?)
As for the TRON: Legacy sales, please remember that this is the closer to a video game a movie can get. The demographic for Legacy is the hi-tech savvy crowd, therefore the 68% ratio makes perfect sense.
If BD is so good then tell me why every store in my town has reduced the space devoted to BD since Christmas? My only hope for most new releases is an on-line seller. The managers tell me that their head offices are responsible.
I love my Bluray's over 500 in my collection...but reviewing the different version of tron legacy....dvd is still selling!!

I wish you could get just a Blu ray with out a DVD for a reduced price, I don't know how many DVD's that I have gotten when I bought a Blu ray I have given to my supervisor. I shouldn't have to pay extra for something I don't want?
A top selling Blu- ray was Tron: Legacy which managed to garner a massive 68% of sales on the format outselling the DVD at a 2:1 ratio, this has to be the best news I have on a Blu ray front in a long time!
