Lucasfilm Reveals Star Wars Blu-ray Saga Details and Box Art
Posted May 4, 2011 08:27 AM by Webmaster
Lucasfilm previously announced that "all will be revealed" concerning the Star Wars Saga Blu-ray sets on May 4th at 6am PST with an e-mail message directing fans to the May the 4th Be with You - Star Wars Countdown page on StarWars.com. The details and images revealed include official box art, a disc-by-disc breakdown of the bonus content available in the Complete Saga Blu-ray box set, confirmation that each film will feature a DTS-HD Master Audio 6.1 surround track, and another teaser of sorts:
"Fans will get an exclusive first look at some of the collection's extensive special features at this year's San Diego Comic-Con International -- which marks Lucasfilm's 35th anniversary as a Comic-Con presence. In 1976, the fledgling film company was looking for innovative, grass-roots ways to promote its underdog release, a film no one expected to succeed -- a space opera known (at the time) only as Star Wars. One of the first film companies to reach out directly to core audiences by way of fan conventions, Lucasfilm will return to the venue to showcase the full evolution of the epic story."
The Complete Saga Blu-ray box set will offer full 1080p video presentations of the films, DTS-HD Master Audio 6.1 surround tracks (it's unclear whether these 6.1 mixes are matrixed or discrete) and more than forty hours of special features, including never-before-seen content from the Lucasfilm archives:

We will continue to update this news post with more details as they become available.
Nice to have some details, but I suppose we'll have to wait longer to determine what further tweaks might have been made to these films.
I'm also really interested in seeing what the deleted scenes are for the original trilogy plus what the packaging looks like.
Course I knew we'd be as likely to get theatrical cuts as for monkeys to fly out of my butt playing trumpets... but there's always the inevetable double-dip....
I'm so glad the old 'Making of' documentaries that were previously only available on LaserDisc and VHS are now on Blu-Ray! YAY!
I'm speaking of course of:
The Making of Star Wars (1977, Apx. 49 Minutes)
The Empire Strikes Back: SPFX (1980, Apx. 48 Minutes)
Classic Creatures: Return of the Jedi (1983, Apx. 48 Minutes)
But what about what's included in the Original Trilogy box set? No way I'm getting the prequel crap. Plus, I really hope when they go back up that they give us the cover art; I'm dying to see what it looks like!!
Good info BUT i'm hoping or was hoping for some info such as what further tweaks were made to the movies. Hopefully that will be part of the "and more"!
Fox doesn't know the meaning of "everything". Cause "everything" would imply details about the package and complete description of audio tracks and subtitles.
I thought 6.1 was an odd choice. Figured 5.1 or maybe 7.1 as a longshot, but 6.1 caught me off guard. Im sure they will be given reference treatment. I keep thinking about the quality of Indy 4.
to be honest with how much they wee pumping up the announcement, I kinda expected something more. This is all great, but pretty much what most would expect.
I'm so excited for this box set!!! I'm kinda mad that its in 6.1 and not 7.1, i spend good money on my 7.1 system and its not used enough. I hope the site gets back online soon, may the force be with you!
I am also more interested in the Original Trilogy set. Speaking of which, which version is the Blu-ray set getting? Is it the original theatrically-released version, the 1997 special edition version, the DVD version (which inserted Hayden Christiansen into Return of the Jedi), or a new altered version? Also, I'm guessing that it's only a matter of time before the saga is released on 3D Blu-ray.
@skinnyboy: That is a very tasteless and inappropriate remark. Please think of the implications of making such a comparison. It's an insult to deceased and their families who were victims of that madman. It's as bad as some fools who start comparing some current day politican to Hitler because of some minor thing that politician has done.
As for the set, I like what I'm reading. It does look however like I'll be keeping the special features discs from my DVDs. Based on this list there is a lot missing.
Extremely difficult to get trough at the moment. Just got to the dutch page ( my language) and it says DTS 6.1. It is a huge leap from the crappy DD streams from the DVD versions, but still not the quality everyone was hoping for... But nothing more than expected from Luca$.
Did they say it would be anamorphic or not? I dont want cropped screen when it comes to Star Wars! I just want IV V and VI to see how they look. We know I II and III will look good since they are pretty recent films and dont need as much work.
^ Who Am I?: It's already been confirmed by Fox as DTS-HD MA. The press release just wasn't specific. The comment from Ken 6 above yours clearly states this.
Still no theatrical original trilogy. Han and Greedo will forever fire at each other simultaneously, Boba Fett's voice will always be the voice of Boba Fett, and Hayden Christensen will replace Sebastian Shaw for eternity. My unborn children will never know anything else.
Special features for versions of the film that, in Lucas's mind, don't exist anymore. Awesome. "Here are some special effects in Star Wars that you can't actually see anymore because I CGI'd over them."
Thanks Ken Brown! I was also concerned that they would dare to put a lossy mix on these, but it's good to know it's lossless! It's also good to see the original "making of" documentaries for the OT. It is strange not to see "Empire of Dreams," though. Oh, well. Loving it so far! One channel more than I was expecting of audio!
You know, with all the techno marvel that Lucas has at his disposal, you'd think he could get a website to work properly without it crashing at the first signs of traffic.
That being said, personally, I'd only be interested in the original trilogy, and then, only the unmolested version. I did not care for Lucas' CGI crapfest re-release of Episodes 3-6. But, more than likely, I'm in the minority, and will have to settle. Oh well. I just hope they leave the 'Jones' films alone.
Special Features are what is selling this 'set' to ME. Otherwise I would wait for the individuals. Would have been amazing to include the Ewok movies, but I knew that was a stretch and a pipe dream. I'm pretty excited about all the vintage material that is included... Also, a picture of the packaging would have been nice.
Don't like the late 90's Special Editions? Wait till you see the upcoming 3D versions coming soon to your neighbourhood multiplex. I'm hoping every Star Wars fan boycotts them. (I can dream).
I'm sure the DVD special features will be ported over. Honestly they can fit the content on there, especially if it's in SD. The release above says "Additional Content", which could point to the DVD special features. Nobody knows at this point, but it could be included. It would be silly for them not to, since they already have the footage ready and digitized. Even if it's in SD at least it's someplace. However I'd love to see Empire of Dreams in HD (especially with the bit of the Star Wars Holiday special that they trimmed off the DVD).
It's my sincerest hope that with all of Lucasfilm's technology and film-tweaking know-how, that they finally, FINALLY get rid of that little black "worm" on the emperor's face in the ROTJ throne room scenes. That one little adjustment would make this a perfect set for me.
the haters would poo poo in their pants if when it reaches 100% it says original theatrical cuts are included. That being said the original trilogy set looks wickedly good.
Does not really matter what they give us in way of cover/cases. I know for sure I will be printing something from the custom art page those guys are talented, Lucas should have ran a contest and chosen the best ones for the set.
I'm excited. I was hoping for some more behind the scenes featurettes, but the descriptions of the first two bonus discs are vague enough to to probably have some juicy ones hidden. Heck, I'm 95% sure there will be making ofs on the other 2 discs Besides, the ones that are explicitly listed sound like winners here. My only beef is that the prequels kinda get left out of the last disc, what with special documentaries that focus on a film for each original film, but none for any prequel.
Aside from that minor quibble, this is awesome news. I can't wait to get my hands on this set. The bonus features on all three discs sounds awesome and I'm sure the films will look and sound awesome.
Also, for a little sarcasm...ahem ..."I wonder which of the three discs will be included on each trilogy set?" (I say that looking at the prequel trilogy only bonus discs and original trilogy only disc).
Knowing Lucas we will get many Easter Eggs in this set for sure. Love to have the Christmas special as one, always good to laugh at yourself evey once in a while George.
Hopefully the PC CD-rom content for Phantom Menace released a few years back is also being included. Like every true STAR WARS fan here, I wish he'd done what Spielberg did with ET and released BOTH versions of the original trilogy. I want the film I grew up with and saw at the cinema. And I can't believe in the whole wide world no one has upload a 1080p high quality version of STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE to bit torrent or something like that, which maybe the only way to get a HD copy.
Why do studios always make weird and poor choices? We are in the era of 7.1, 7.2 and 9.+++
Only a absolutely tiny <0.1% of people has a 6.1 setup.
As being one, of if not, the most wanted Bd on earth, why not do a full job and give us a 7.1 track?
Maybe they plan on releasing another set with 7.1 down the road to get us to buy it again!!!
Why are people complaining about there not being 7.1 tracks? The whole point of lossless audio is to properly reproduce the master. In the case of the re-release of the original trilogy and the release of the newer trilogy, the movies were mastered for Dolby 5.1EX in the theater. A 6.1 DTS-MA track makes sense... because that's what they mixed for. And considering that just about every 7.1 receiver can use the 6th channel to create proper 7-channel steering for those who don't want to reproduce the original mix, I don't see what the big deal is. Looking forward to playing this on my 9.2 system!
Sooo, are we getting the untouched non-special edition version of the film as a "special feature" (which they couldnt even bother putting in anamorphic widescreen), like on the DVDs?
Also, the Complete Saga box art is great. It reminds me when I thought the pre-quels were going to be amazing.
OK, after seeing the box art, I've become foolishly excited! I can't wait to have them all on BD; either SE, Original cuts, etc!! When released, I will be taking the day off!!!
Anybody going to watch all 6 straight through at once, or like me disect the crap out of all the bonus stuff. Not really a big nut for the bonus stuff but have to admit this set is a different story all together.
If anybody actually thought we would only get a lossy audio mix, you're dumber than you look. Seriously folks... this set was dubbed from the beginning as the "Ultimate" set and you actually thought we'd get anything less than a DTS-HD MA mix? Com'on....this community should be smarter than that.
To be honest, this didn't "reveal" much more of anything than we already knew. I am quite disappointed in this little "event". No info on TPM CGI Yoda. No info on which exact version we get of the movies (since there are many) or if Lucas did any further tweaking. No info on what exact deleted and extended scenes we get. And, where is Empire of Dreams? I am NOT interested in the stupid spoofs garbage, I wont even watch that. Why not a bloopers reel instead? Where are all the special features from the 1,2,and 3 dvd's? I am not that excited about this anymore to be honest. And by the way, it is not "complaining" when people voice their opinion or concerns about this. It's simply an opinion. thats all.
@KulasDevorn - I have a feeling there's more to be revealed. For one thing it's only 30 percent complete acording to the website, so there´s still like 70 percent worth of details and images to come!
Correct. The countdown site is only at 30% completion. I also spied a number of (inaccessible) video links and additional downloadables before the site crashed this morning. I'm not guaranteeing anything exciting but, for the moment, it does appear far more is on its way.
Sidenote: I really like the Original Trilogy box art! Why couldn't we get that for the Complete Saga?? But it's an alright artwork i guess, the Luke/Anakin parallel, but i just dont like the thought of having Jake Lloyd on the front cover! I try to forget that movie ever happened...
So who’s hoping for a digital Yoda in Episode I? I certainly wouldn’t mind. In fact, I’m really hoping they did a serious overhaul of FX tweaks and clean-up for both Phantom and Clones. Sith is okay the way it is.
RichardP - For completists, it would have been nice. But I'm pretty sure between discs 7-9, everything that is part of those documentaries will be covered, so including them would be re-tread. I'm happier to have some of those vintage documentaries back as all of those and much more were missing from the DVD releases.
@dmarvin @insomniac013 : Yes, I can read. But it says nothing about exactly what it is. Why all the hidden crap? Just spell it out, reveal it all AT ONCE, and be done with it. This whole thing is just ridiculous in my opinion. Another way to annoy people for no reason.
ok, I'm sorry but the website and having the details having to be unlocked, is the most dumb Idea ever!! However I am pumped to buy The Complete Saga! I have never owned any of the star wars films, and I'm glad I waited... this is the format(Blu-Ray) that will end all formats, except digital downloading of course..lol I can't wait for this release in September! EPIC!!!
If somebody already said it, sorry...but i have a feeling its gonna be the same style packaging used for the Alien Set...and that hard cardboard sucked...i'll wait until they use some amrays, like the UK version of Alien came in. Plus its much thinner.
Box art is being loaded as it becomes available. You may need to refresh or restart your browser to see the latest images as we obtain them. (Keep in mind larger boxart images are forthcoming, presumably once the unlock procedure reaches 100%.)
It's too bad that the prequels are such rechid films. The originals on the other hand are timeless classics and the best reason to own a Blu-ray player and a Hi-Def tv.
P.S. I'd love to see them take the prequels out of the official canon and consider them along the same lines as the Star Wars Christmas special.
if you go on the site again it now has video, nothing great, but it has some video. Cuts off about a minute in and tells you to see more sign up. Its going to be a long day.
The two channels in the back are almost never used. It's not that they are pointless, they are just rarely used correctly. Was hoping these releases would show the way but complaining about 6.1 to 7.1 is a minor gripe.
What is completely lacking from this announcement is how much time and effort they put into these transfers from an A/V standpoint. In the end that is all I care about. Extras are just that: extras.
I was hoping for a full fledged documentary on the restoration process and George explaining to us why we cannot have the original versions. Also, a full fledged documentary on the collectible history of Star Wars, is long overdue. This doc. could fill an entire BD for all I care. Instead we get...well nothing new really.
Question I need answered:
Has the OT been correctly color timed, OR.. is this just a high bitrate version of the 04' SD/DVD.
Sign me up! Looking forward to having these in the BD library. As for the docs from the previous DVD releases, who knows? Those *could* be part of the "Additional Content" they are touting on Discs 7 & 8.
I, life-long, have considered myself a Star Wars fan, but the Special Editions and the at-best-lackluster Prequels have really stretched things thin. We watched as Lucas went from a young, dreamy-eyed, imaginative director (I'd also say writer, but he's admitted that his friends rewrote most of his dialogue [and made it human and approachable] because he wasn't very good at writing dialogue [sound familiar? Prequels?]) who worked within limitations and overcame them through creativity and innovation and who took criticism, embraced teamwork and accepted help, to become an egomaniacal control freak, his mind altered along his advancing years through divorce, commercialism, Howard the Duck, and later adoptive parenting (giving him supposed insight into a child's mind). No longer does he look on the world and his future through the unclouded eyes he began this series with so long ago, rather than leaning on the strengths of others as he did in the past (he didn't direct ep 5 or 6, and again, the writing kudos to his friends and others), he surrounded himself with yes-men and took full control over writing (including dialogue) and direction for the Prequels; also, with an increasingly huge sense of perfectionism he ignores beliefs he once held (he battled before Congress against the colorization of classic B&W movies) and altered, tweaked, and altered again his classic movies from the versions generations grew up with and restricted as much access as he could to original versions (even for so much as comparison's sake to see how much 'progress' he has made), and if what he says is to be believed, may even have gone as far as to damage or destroy original prints, he took a cultural phenomenon and squandered it. Without any respect shown in this Blu-ray set for what got him to where he is today, or even the slightest hint of repentance or so much as a veil over his intent to eventually force yet another double-dip (3D was OBVIOUSLY part of his original vision; like Jar-Jar, Australian Boba/Jango Fett and his clones, Earth-centric ethnic stereotype aliens, and nonsensical sudden complete switches to the dark-side), I will have to say, "No, sir, I will not buy your movies... again."
"I am very concerned about our national heritage, and I am very concerned that the films that I watched when I was young and the films that I watched throughout my life are preserved, so that my children can see them." - George Lucas, expressing concern over the Colorization of black & white films.
wow those box arts are so dissapointing! of course i will buy them, but no way are those being displayed face first. sad, the DVD trilogy set had awesome box art.
(not trying to be negative, super excited about the features!)
I too am surprised with the cover art. Not too classy. The Aliens Anthology, Rocky Collection, Lord of the Rings, Band of Brothers all had much more attractive cover art, just to name a few. This looks more like cereal box imagery. oh well. what can you do. George still thinks it's kids that shell out the big bucks for collections like this. I prefer the all black, red and blue placeholder cover art to these.
i fully understand yoda-sama,Lucas has lost it completely over the years, the worst alteration i have ever seen in anny movie goes to Lucas, actually changing a actors face with another!!!
never heard of the word"disrespectfull" mr Lucas?
i saw the originals at the theatres when they premiered, and love those versions,i had some hope he would smarten up for these blu rays and release them, make ALL the fans happy, not just the youngsters who dont care much about the alterations, and prohably find the "last" 3 movies more then the "old" ones, matter of taste ofcourse...annyway,like pondosinatra above's acomment, same here,NO PURCHASE for this worthless box-set,its not "complete" by a long shot, ill treasure my PAL unaltered versions on dvd,and shame Mr Lucas for destroying our and your childrens legacy!
i... i cant believe people are liking these box arts! the dvd set was great (the silver vader face) and the original trilogy posters were fantastic too, this is just some godawful cgi splattered everywhere. wow.
Honestly I don't know what to think about the box covers. The seperate boxcovers for the prequel and original trilogy looks different but I kind of like it. However those of us shelling out the big bucks for the complete collection, as I'm sure most of us here including myslef, will will be getting "that" cover? I mean first off the whole young Anakin and young Luke composite doesn't even look that good. Every time i pick that box set up I'm going to have to look at that young anoying kid that pretty much ruined the first movie (along with other things) with his horrible acting. For the complete set I was really expecting a really nice original collage of all the films in maybe a wrap around style. Hell I'd even settle for another Vader picture at this point. Being that this is the first time that even a whole set has been realeased for these timeless movies they felt that that picture would carry all the emotional weight of these 6 films? Fail! Here's hoping that they really change it after all the negtive reviews. There is still time.
On the other hand I really like all the bonus features and will most likely be taking the day off from work to purchase this behemoth set on day 1 when stores open.
this is kind of lame....vintage docs (and not even "from star wars to jedi" the best one!). 3 hours of fan costumes and spoofs?? big deal. what a rip off! nothing you cant see on friggin youtube. plus all the old DVD commentaries and "lost" scenes we've all seen. this is weak weak weak.
OT on BD is cool...but everything else here is a repackaging of old stuff. i'll stick to my HD bootlegs.
lord of the rings had 2 discs of extra PER FILM...once again lucas is holding out
another slap in the face from a creatively bankrupt delusional hack. i hope sales tank...they won't. but it's the only message lucas would hear. amazing how far lucas has fallen..from introducing magic to millions of kids...to sucking it out of everything since.
so the complete collection box art hasnt been revealed yet right? just original and prequel art right? cause on the may the 4th site, it stops the video right before they show the complete art im guessing. you can start to see something...and then it cuts off cause its still not unlocked.
so I dont know if its been mentioned or not(too much info) is the Star Wars trilogy IV,V,VI from the original trilogy in 2004 with the inserted footage or the Limited editions in 2006?
Bottom line: No original theatrical editions of the original trilogy, no sale. After all isn't the lion's share of each been upgraded already, so isn't the expense excuse even more absurd?
And, I echo others in asking, why include the original making docs that showcase the ground-breaking, award-winning work of the fledgling ILM - yet omit the resulting product of those crews' blood, sweat and tears from this release?
Now, I don't pan all of the changes made (but in honesty, most do rub me the wrong way), but as a film buff who was thrilled at the restoration of Metropolis, I cannot understand Lucas' insistence to ignore the much loved, original incarnations of the original trilogy and will not buy as a matter of protest - voting with my wallet.
Include them Mr. Lucas and I'd be all over this...
To Lucas, only the SE (new footage) is the true version of the films. While some don't like it, this is the reality of the situation. It's a pity, since it would be simple to include both versions of the films. I'm still overjoyed we are getting all the films in hi-def.
C'mon...there has to be ONE person willing to b!tch that it isn't in 11.1!!!!
Any takers??
I'm thinking dts 6.1 MASTER audio is going to be sick like a pervert on acid and once you hear it...you'll forget all about #7. Both the rears will be used anyway, so it's not like one speaker is going to get all dusty on you.
1) I can't believe the complete set - both the other sets look bad-ass but the complete series makes me want to wretch. Good thing I don't care *that* much about packaging, but I'm not about to buy them separately. Think the other two really I'd love but Annie and Big Annie in slave-land is not the most memorable part of the series for me - more like the parts I try to forget.
2) I don't get what we are all waiting for - just the video to end? No new actual details? I can't even find the details on the site - what am I missing? I just see a video file that plays.
I wonder why people thought the theatrical cuts of the OT would be included here. I was fairly certain there was no chance in hell of that happening. Thus, I didn't get my hopes up for it and, therefore, I am not mad as hell like some people reacting to the release.
I think the original theatrical releases that are on DvD are a better experience.
I think a high def version, would take away some of the magic. I'm pretty happy with the DvD versions of the originals and if they come out in Blu one day...cool...if they don't...at least we'll have what we have.
Heck, I have been & always will be a Star Wars fan! I think the cover art looks great and as a big fan of bonus content this set is a treasure trove!! It's a shame that the originals won't be included, but who knows...maybe at a later date! I can't wait to see this on all the glory my Panny plasma has to offer!
On a side note, GL could really gain in the public opinion polls if he started making Episodes 7, 8, & 9 using the "Thrawn Trilogy" books by Timothy Zahn! I would certainly boost my approval rating ;-) Great news today!
yeah...as an artist myself..the box art isnt that great. they shouldve went with Drew Struzan..who is not a stranger to movie poster/cover art. (& who has also done numerous star wars paintings used in official promotion and sales)
Not really upset about the lack of the Christmas special, but where is the excellent documentary "Empire of Dreams" that was included on the original DVD box set?
The box art for the 'original trilogy' is pretty solid but the other two are pretty lame in my opinion. Especially the 'complete saga', which I pre-purchased. Very disappoiting over all as far as the looks but at the very least... there is no Jar Jar Binks to be found.
Not being a huge Star Wars fan - my son is - I can say quite objectivly that 1. The content looks very good and 2. The cover art is dire - I mean what was wrong with the temp art that was seen up to now ?
I like the box art for the separate editions. The complete saga artwork is the one I can't stand. The concept is ok, but it doesn't look like it's finished. Could have done better on it.
I hope the crushed blacks and pink light sabres of the 2004 DVD's have been fixed. Actually, thinking about, there were quite a lot of technical problems with the special editions (missing or incorrect credits, colour problems, sound problems, some effects cleaned up whilst others weren't).
I would have preferred more technical information on the transfers than previews of concept art.
I wonder what has changed in the films this time....
Geez Looeez, what the hell is with all this bitching about the cover art??? It's like some people sit arounmd watching the cover art of the movies rather than the movies themselves. I personally love the cover art. And I'd put money on it right now that the Complete Saga set cover art is just an outer box with the othe two box sets within. I'd be very surprised if it wasn't. Because they're only splitting them up for anal retentive fans who only want one trilogy over another.
I cant understand why everyone hates episode 1. I love it, the Darth Maul fight sequence is amazing and the music score is out of this world. I cannot imagine Star Wars without that soundtrack.
Have all of the extras been announced in full yet, or are there still more to be confirmed?
@chronos1976 - the 2004 DVD/hi def broadcast masters are a joke. Some of the worst crush I've ever seen and some of the most laughably inaccurate flesh tones too. The non-anamorphic laserdisc transfers in the 2006 DVD release are massively superior in terms of color and contrast. Ok, they're worse in every other respect but I still find these are the discs I watch most often when it comes to a Star Wars marathon.
Well, so much for individual cases on each. They could have at least shown the disc artwork too. Guess we'll have to suffer with the credit card wallet fold out thingy majiggy which winds up cracked and broken more than anything else. Sigh.
I love the cover art for the complete saga. I think it looks awesome. I can't wait to see some of the deleted scenes from the original trilogy. Should be a really interesting set.
a. Box art is utter garbage, the plain boxes were MUCH classier.
b. I STILL ain't paying a red cent until i see what has been done to the films to restore my faith.
c. No token original editions (bundled from 3x DVD onto 1x blu-ray)?
...and finally; yes, i am a butthurt fan of the original editions and proud of it! Posters of a certain age just don't understand why it matters so much that justice be done to this saga.
...sack it, i sending in seal team six to recover the data from skywalker ranch and get the true fans to donate to the restoration.
