Bonus View Gets Official Nod

Share
Posted November 1, 2007 11:25 AM by Josh Dreuth

Blu-ray DiscSenior VP of Product Planning at Pioneer and Chair of the BDA Promotions Committee Andy Parsons confirmed on Monday that the profile previously known as "Profile v1.1" or "Full Profile" shall henceforth be known as "Bonus View". The move was made to ease consumer confusion regarding the recent change in Blu-ray requirements as new "Bonus View" titles like Lionsgate's 'War' and Fox's 'Sunshine' get launched early next year.

Bonus View.. I think I like Full Profile better, but I suppose this is the same marketing team who
chose "I Do Blu". I hope its catchy enough for the average consumer.

Anything that eases consumer confusion is a good thing. Especially for Blu :-)

I enjoyed Sunshine and would really like to see it in HiDef.

this is a really great technique. this way when profile 1.0 players on on sale for the cheap, consumers won't feel like they aren't getting a full product, because there player doesn't have the full profile on it. instead, they will feel like they got the full product, other blu-ray products out there just have a bonus thing to them for an extra cost.

Yeah it seems that they view BONUS VIEW is more non-techy and easily identifiable by the Average Joe. I'm just ciked to use this Bonus View cant wait.

So what are they going to call Profile 2.0? "Bonus View Live"?

^^^^^^^^^^^

No, "Live View".

I agree. "Bonus View" is a great non-technical way of offering "something extra" on the disc. Throw too many tech terms at an uninformed public and they'll stop listening.

Great to see Blu-Ray evolve, while HD-DVD is stuck since people on the HD-DVD don't like to evolve. This is nothing but great news for the whole Blu-Ray community.

If it helps consumers it is better. But I like full profile better.

Bonus View is actually a very good name for it, as there never was anything missing from the existing blu-ray players, they simply added some features like PiP for those people who want that ability. If you don't, you can buy an existing model and you will still be able to play every movie with no problems.

I like the name Bonus View because it indicates that it's something extra from the movie, so consumers don't think it's some essential feature if they just want to play blu-ray movies properly.

"Full profile" might scare them into thinking that current players that don't have it don't work properly. It's gotta be real simple for the average consumer. Names and titles are so important. That's why I hate the name HD-DVD, it sounds geeky (C'mon, a 5-letter acronym? and too many "E" sounds), whereas "Blu-ray" sounds like some cool new technology, like how DVD was so exciting and cool 10 years ago.

@kaliraver69: HD-DVD people can't evolve even if they try. Natural selection.
