Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that 'Spider-Man 3' has become their best selling Blu-ray title to date. Final numbers are a few days away, but it appears that the web-slinging hero managed to surpass sales of Sony's longtime Blu-ray golden-child 'Casino Royale' in its first week of sales.
Just remember when we get the numbers from video scan at the end of the week Spiderman 3 will be split into two groups. Individual title sales and trilogy sales. The number that Sony publishes will probably be the combination of both.
well this sounds intriguing i must say, i mean if spider-man 3 surpasses 300's sales than you can say this war is a rap. i mean just looking at it now if these unreleased numbers are any indication to go by than i certainly believe this should give sony and co. a boost and ultimately become the deciding factor for warner to go blu ray exclusive here in the fourth quarter. I could see it now a rotation of dominant films back to back, all coming from lionsgate, disney, fox, sony pictures, sony mgm pictures and others. 1st spider-man trilogy 2nd pirates of the carribean collection probable, 3rd die hard collection set, 4th rush hour trilogy and 5th yes the matrix trilogy is coming to blu ray folks, 6th saw collection, 7th hustle collection sweet. now lets see alien vs predator, than alien vs predator requiem, i robot, spider-man 4 yes you all heard it. cars, fantastic 4 1 n 2, underworld 3 prequel to underworld 1 called rise of the lycans, toys story 1 n 2, x-men trilogy, resident evil trilogy, another bond film all versus shreck3 transformer bourne ulti and blades of glory, hmm looks like a mis-match if you ask me, not to mention i forgot to make mention of more films that beg attention.
Even if Spidey 3 didn't outsell Transformers (which it probably did) it's because people with Blu-ray players probably were working on getting back titles. Either that or they were saving their money for Cars, Ratatouille, Die Hard, Pirates, etc.
For HD-DVD, Transformers was pretty much the be-all, end-all exclusive of their year. I doubt too many people passed on Transformers for Shrek.
Kill Bill movies and Pulp Fiction are from Miramax which is indeed owned by Disney.
Sin City is from Dimension Films which is currently owned by Weinstein. All movies made by Dimension prior to Oct. 2005 are owned by Disney. Sin City was released in April 2005 and is therefore owned by Disney's Miramax Studios.
either way you all look at it the fact remains blu ray as a format will win this war, okay so if spider-man doesn't outsell transformer than what? are we blu ray supporters supposed to die or something? no, i mean if that doesn't do the trick you still got an arsenal of exclusives coming out this week and beyond. shit not everyone is into action flicks like spider-man 3 or transformer for that matter. but the fact is spider-man 3 had two different packages you now a single standard DVD box and a hi-depth trilogy so at the end of the day that becomes hard to track down as oppose to one single box set. besides rato and cars are around the corner while pirates of the carribean and die hard and other films await their turn. simple. sure shreck 3 and bourne ulti are coming but don't kid yourselves, new line's rush hour 3 will arrive soon exclusively on blu ray until spring 08 along with the wolf pack known as fox, disney, lionsgate, sony/mgm and sony pictures. so its alright adevilnamedbuena. relax and witness the might of the wolf pack.
who cares if spidey beat transformers. we already know the spidey dvd didn't beat it, so the fact that spiderman 3 will be even close will speak that blu-ray is a lot stronger (movies that aren't as good, sell the same amount), and if spidey did beat tformers than that is just icing on the cake. like i said earlier ratatouille is going to crush any spidey numbers. its climibing fast on amazon.com
Good news; it's a very good film, better than I was led to believe; and of course, looks and sounds great on Blu-ray. As for Transformers, I got it on dvd from the US, (I live in the UK), and it looks great on the standard format; no sweat, don't feel the need to go out and buy a HD-DVD player; after all, I have what to me is the ultimate hi-def player; my PS3.
Great news. I think Sony should have released Spidey 3 by it's self. Then released 1 & 2 later with
packaging to add in 3. This would have left no doubt on numbers sold. Glad Sony didn't jump the gun
by posting COULD be numbers.
Guys i just want point out that most of those individuals that come here to try and rant on blu ray, are either first time buyers stock with the wrong format so they fear it fails, because lets be honest no one wants to be stock with useless material right, or they are probably loyal Microsoft fans who strongly feel sony shouldn't deserve to win this format wars. all in all most of these people seem to think that because sony had a fluke or two in the past in the form of betamax and UMD they think sony can't engineer state of the art hardware or formats, but thats rubbish i mean every company has had its share of ups and downs which means they get to learn from their mistakes. Now sony as of late is doing good despite all the negative press, i mean they are currently number 1 in sales with their bravia tvs and cameras, playstation 2 is still going strong and wait until the $99 model come out early next year. psp has healthy numbers and sony doesn't lose anything on them, so sure the ps3 isn't doing quite well yet but come 08, both the ps3 and blu ray will dominate everything in site i can guarantee you that. but anyways Microsoft is a monopoly in itself and a company like that wouldn't want to fork heft dollar amounts to the second best and largest Japanese company in the form of royalties if indeed sony succeeds and becomes victor, and Toshiba doesn't want the next betamax in their hands so they are teaming up and resorting to desperate drastic measures so when they do get something positive out of it their fans come in here blindly ignoring the reality and jumping the gun. What most people fail to realize is sony was one half of the two companies who created the DVD format, the other was of course Philips. So why can't sony create a successor to it if they wanted to? Bottom line sony feels it has finally crafted and engineer a format far superior and far beyond leeps and bounds than DVD, they used the ps2 to help drive the DVD market and it succeeded, so now that they are using the ps3 to drive blu ray people get upset? for those children with no intelligence of what so ever please get a grip. Microsoft only wants people to be plugged into windows their version of the matrix for entertainment period, and Toshiba doesn't want to give up now because it will than lose a substantial amount of money for sure. and their fans don't want to see their companies fail, sadly enough they have to come here only to get booted. The momentum is in sony's court boys.
Yeah i am sorry about that i should have. And to bazie is not that people are assuming spider-man will beat transformer or anything is just saying that if it does than it will be like icing on the cake, when you consider the amount of exclusives sitting around the corner awaiting their turn. know what i mean.
I thought Transformers was a much better movie and one I would have loved to have on Blu-ray but that being said I still got the Spider trilogy and plan on watching them all this weekend back to back.
No doubt the numbers will be huge but stunted a bit due to being a pack in movie, as well as being sold in a box set. It would be great if they could give a break down of how many PS3's and other 'free' pack-ins sold that week as well. We should at least find out how many single and trilogy sets were sold.
And FYI, Casino Royal has sold something to the tune of over 120k so far. They released a numbers recently but I can't find it. It may have been closer to 130k.
This may be a crazy couple months for BD and hopefully every week breaks the previous weeks record. Ratatouille next week, Oceans 13/Close Encounters the week after, then Die Hard, Pirates 3 (I think this years biggest single seller), Potter, Blade Runner, Rush Hour 3 and Happy New Year.
well said LynxFX. point is looking now and forward we blu ray owners will just have more to look forward to than the HD-DVD camp as far as content goes. again how can we lose? for the love of god both universal and paramount should just give up the nonsense of a fight they are currently putting on and join us to put an end to this thing already. I say we should all send universal some emails and try and convince these guys to at least go neutral since numbers aren't doing much to get their attention. man this war is pointless i tell ya.
"Will they be counting the Spiderman 3 in the 4 disc box set or will it be on individual sales?"
In the Neilson's numbers they will be counted as seperate titles. 1 set of numbers for the box set, one set of numbers for the single.
"BTW Casino Royale sold around 100,000 the 1st week,"
It was actually a lot lower than that. Sony had a press release that said they shipped 100k but actual sales were in the 60's I believe. Would have to check back at the numbers from back in April. But now it is somewhere in the 120k range total and Sony said they outsold that number so I would think we are in the 150-200k range perhaps. It might be a bit lower than that though.
Don't forget that the release day was also the release day of this Guitar game alot of people were waiting for, and I read that was in the same demo, so I think 2nd week sales will be higher than normal.
I dont know if the trillogy went quite as high on amazons top 100 list, but combined with the single spidey 3 movie, Im sure spidey pulled past transformers sales. And this week, I bet the Rat does pretty good himself.
Good to hear that. But I don't think Spidey VS Transformers is a fair game. For them, everybody is waiting for six months and have only one big hit movie to buy. Of course, it is easy for them to make the record. For us, our problem is we have at least six movies to buy per month. If we still make the record, hmmmm ... really not fair.
Great news on the sales for us and this will show Paramount and that two-faced Michael bay the real facts and what they have missed out on, since all they worry about is money...but that aside i cant agree with some of you, I thought Spiderman 3 was simply crap, Spidy 2 was brill, but not this one, Well we are not here to criticize the movie but to see it prevail over HD DVD and happy days are ahead,
Spiderman 3 was a decent but not fantastic movie and I liked Transformers. I'd love to have TF on Blu as well as Matrix and Batman and the way things are going, it looks like its just a matter of time.
You know what's funny about all this? No one has mentioned the biggest indicater this year: Harry Potter coming out on both formats. People talk about who Warner will eventually side with; compare this Christmas' sales of all 5 HP movies and the box set and then you'll see just how clear the leader is(Do you think they'd announce which format they're going to support before cashing in on the HP releases this Christmas??). There isn't much point comparing exclusives because they are different movies that cater to different tastes. While its cool that Blu continues to outsell HD even through a huge exclusive; either way, one side is going to be stuck with a collection of a dead format's movies and that's not cool.
The article referred to from DVD town is kind of confusing. It says
On DVD, Virgin senior product manager Chris Anstey said that "Transformers" was a phenomenon. It sold three times more than Spider-man 3 on the first day.
So I understand this remark has to do only with the DVD sales (which is understandable because the title was not released on blu-ray) and not with HD DVD sales.
So no comparison was in fact made between the Spiderman blu-ray sales and Transformers HD-DVD sales on the first day or
Spiderman was just the beginning of the big Blu Christmas releases: Pirates 3, Independance Day will be pretty big too. Its too bad I, Robot got delayed.
I wonder what will happen to releases where oppositley exclusive studios released a movie. Will both get it or neither, like Indiana Jones being spread out over Lucas/Paramount/Fox.
People that think exclusives will win this war never forget to talk about Star Wars but always forget to mention The Lord Of The Rings!
And why Gladiator hasn't come out on HD-DVD yet confuses the hell out of me considering its a Universal/Dreamworks release but its just another title that would perform fantastically on Blu.
Guys i got a rather dumb question to ask all you here today and i know i own the system but this question must be asked because i just got word that universal believes that 70% of ps3 users don't know about blu ray in their ps3's.
so the question i'm going to ask is: do you know that your playstation 3 can play blu ray movies?
please answer the question (Yes or No).
and by the way some one should start a survey on this, maybe this will get through and counter attack the hilarious claims by Microsoft Toshiba and Universal about ps3 gamers not been aware of its blu ray capabilities. (please let me know by simply answering the question, YES or NO) thank you.
Considering PS3 came with Talledega Nights on launch, has a big Blu logo on the box, has a logo on every game's package and disc, has a buy a PS3 (or any BR player) and get 5 free Blu Ray movies promotion and now comes with Spiderman 3, it would be pathetic if PS3 owners did't know. I think its just more crap being spit out by the losing side because they can't say anything good about their own format so they bash the competition with made up "facts". Better still, 70% of PS3 owners; how many people did they ask? That stat was released way after my system was purchased and i was never asked so unless its 70% of owner's "POLLED" it is just a lie. I guess if you can't beat the competiton, you might as well spread stupid rumors. Think about it seriously. In a non-game console comparision, HD-DVD players have sold more than Blu yet Blu destroys them in movie sales so obviously people with PS3s are buying Blu movies. There are still going to be many people who will wait for the war to end to buy anything but a little common scense would go a long way when people interprit these kinds of annoucements.
now i just wish everyone here could answer the question as you just have, i mean i have to get this spread through out the masses so that playstation 3 gamers can stand up and say otherwise when such a stupid claim comes up again. thats the only reason im asking this hilarious question. i guess someone should start a poll or a petition or something because this has to be phased out asap before it gets worse.
new Rambo film being done by lionsgate, hellboy i believe would be a blu ray exclusive, Halloween should also be blu ray exclusive i believe, final fantasy 7advant children complete also blu ray exclusive, the new resident evil film which is being film in CG render rather than having actual actors is being work by sony pictures in conjunction with capcom. than if fox does indeed decide to make the halo film than yes that too will be blu ray now how ironic is that, now i just hope that universal isn't responsible for the beowolf meets 300=god of war movie or else i would go crazy.
there are forums on this site too you know. you have 0 posts but a dozen news comments, most of which belong in the forums or are repetitious. please just start a new thread with your questions/statements so you can be hazed properly.
welcome to the site!
No offense, but I think it's pointless to ask such a question on this site. I'd be willing to bet that 99% of everyone who posts on here knows the ps3 is a BD player.
yeah i know, thats why i labeled it a rather dumb question. besides if you read the whole thing than you should know why i posted this question on here in the first place, Toshiba, Microsoft and now Universal are stating otherwise, thats why, nothing personal just trying to make a point or case which ever way you want to look at it.
