Amazon's discounted price is $54.99, or roughly $9.17 per movie. As of now, this box set is the only way to own the first six Star Trek films from Amazon's website - Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, and Star Trek V: The Final Frontier are not available for individual purchase outside of the Original Motion Picture Collection (the only other way to own Star Trek III: The Search for Spock is through the Star Trek: Motion Picture Trilogy set).
Note: only the theatrical release versions of the Star Trek movies are included in this bundle.
This is just me, but I would have picked it up for $49, but I'm going to wait at $54.95. I see it was $59.95 for about 3 months in 2010, and was also $54.99 last Black Friday. If it was Director's cuts for $54, definitely yes. That's just me.
Thanks for the theatrical cut "head's up." I'll definitely wait... good things will come. And yes, a cheaper price too because I am certain I will never watch episode 5 again.
I got these when Best Buy was running the promotion of buy a Samsung BD player and get this set for $20. I told my sales associate I would never buy a Samsung BD player as they are crap and bought a different brand and had the floor manager override the collection for $20. The collection could be better but for $20 I can't complain. I would wait for the directors' cuts if I were going to pay this much.
I was wondering if I should wait for new versions, but I decided to go for it. I sold my 10-movie DVD box set a few months ago, and I missed having these films in my collection! Got a surprisingly high amount for those DVDs too - even after I get the TNG blu-ray set, it'll probably still amount to a free upgrade.
It is propably true that Paramount will do better HD transfers in the future, but one would expect such a release to tie into the next Trek flick, and they don't even have a script down yet so it may be some wait until there is a superior set. Also considering the funds that may go into a Next Generation television series release, including new effects shots, etc., Paramount may not want to put so much money simply into the Trek franchise. Just food for thought.
I already own 2, 4, and 6, and paying $50 bucks for the other three (and the extra disc) simpy doesn't make sense for me. I wish I could, though.
the human adventure, is just beginning...
I think only true Trekker's need apply. I got this when it was released several years ago for the same price or better for Father's Day and I was happy enough. To be honest, I was dying to just own "Star Trek-tmp" in the original theatrical cut for years. Some of the aspect's of the late Robert Wise's Director's Cut are very appealing, but many others hit a sour note with me. As with "Blade Runner"- I would prefer to own all the different versions,
complete, remastered and final. Until that fateful day--this will have to do...
I'd been looking forward to this deal all week, but when I saw the price I thought "Meh." Don't know why, but I guess I was expecting a better deal. It's still tempting, but since I own Director's Cut of 1 on DVD and II on BD I think I'll just hold out for the ultimateremastereddirector'scutbigolboxset edition.
Are they ever going to release the other movies separately? The Trekkie in my life already has 2, 4 and 6, and also detests 1 and 5, so really he only needs 3. I know they're available in the UK, but how about here as well?
I was hoping for a better price as well, given all the other markdowns in the past couple weeks. If the price was closer to $8 a film I may have bitten.
Shame only Khan has a decent restoration, I'll probably just hand onto my DVD editions and pick up Khan on its own.
Or maybe pick-up the "trilogy" set.
I own this set along with the TNG set. I think they look great on blu-ray. Huge upgrade over the DVDs. I wouldn't mind directors' cuts of all the films though. I miss THG crew. They actually had emotion and gave moral lessons (unlike Star Trek).
