PS3 Price Drop Boosts Blu-ray Install Base

Posted November 15, 2007 09:15 AM by Josh Dreuth

PlayStation 3 Sony has announced that the recent price cut for the PS3, as well as the introduction of the less expensive 40GB model, has tripled sales of the Blu-ray based game console. The result has been a dramatic increase to the Blu-ray install base with over 5 million units sold worldwide since the console launched late last year.

Andrew House, Sony's chief marketing officer commented, "It puts us vastly ahead of where the other format is going to be in terms of an installed base in people's homes by the end of this holiday season."

Prior to the price drop, weekly sales of the console were averaging between 30,000 and 40,000 units. The week following the price drop, sales rose to 75,000 units. The week after that, 100,000 units. As the PS3 is one of the least expensive and most popular Blu-ray player, sales of Blu-ray movies should see a boost in sales as well.

Weird, www.hidefdigest.com has the numbers doubled, not tripled...I wonder which is closer to the truth. I'll go with tripled. Why not? lol

EDIT: Never mind...they have the same numbers over there that you do here, and the numbers reflect sales having tripled, not doubled. Apparently, they don't understand how fractions work. lol

Great news! So much more effective than a fire sale.

my favorite part is Sony calling DUD "the other format".

With some of the great new games and some very high profile Blu-ray movies, this fits in very well with upcoming holiday buying.

It will be exciting to see both the PS3 and Blu-ray fan base grow.

I work at Circuit City and in the last three weeks I've sold 10 myself. The store as a whole sold maybe 15 or 16. I love it.

The more these get out the better, since they will be recommended to their friends after they see for them selfs how awesome the overall system is.

PS3 and Blu Ray look to be on the way to victory. With Xbox360's Halo 3 release, most people that want a 360 have one where as the PS3 only has room to grow. HD-DVD just doen't have the lineup of movies coming out to put up a fight with Blu Ray and even with HD-DVD's cheep (yet crappy) stand alone release, they can't keep up with the PS3's sales. All I have to say is Microsoft screwed up not releasing the 360 with a built in HD-DVD drive! I can't wait to pick up Pirates 3, Independance Day and the 5 Harry Potters in a few weeks, followed by I Robot in the new year! All I need now is Batman Begins, Armageddon, the Disney classics, Lord Of The Rings, The Matrix and hopfully one day Gladiator and the live and cartoon Transformers movies!

haushausman,
thats very true. There are so many PS2 owners out there just waiting for the PS3 game they want to come out, for a birthday or christmas gift, or for further price drops to replace their PS2 with a PS3. Its all just a matter of time! God Of War 3, Final Fantasy 13, Metal Gear Solid 4 are only the exclusives, then there's Soul Calibur 4, Street Fighter 4, Resident Evil 5 and hopefully the next Castlevania. HD-DVD isn't offering movies and video games because the 360's drive is an add on where as the PS3 gives you even more reason to invest in 1 format for multiple purposes. Go Blu!

Let's not forget the Blu Ray movie included with each.
If the PS3 was on its own, people might still be ignorant of the console's Blu Ray capability.
Now, they'd have to be pretty thick
Welcome to Blu Ray !

Bestbuy Canada has a survey on their website and the PS3 is the #1 most desired game console this weekend, a few points ahead of the Wii and well ahead of everything else. Even my dorky sister is getting one for her husband (40gig of course). Sales will be amazing this holiday.
