Mimic: The Director's Cut Blu-ray (Updated)

Posted July 11, 2011 02:02 PM by Matthew Smith

Lionsgate FilmsLionsgate has announced that Guillermo del Toro's sci-fi horror film Mimic will make its U.S. Blu-ray debut on September 27th. The 1997 Miramax catalog title stars Mira Sorvino (Romy and Michele's High School Reunion), Josh Brolin (No Country for Old Men), Jeremy Northam (The Tudors) and Giancarlo Giannini (Casino Royale).

Mimic, which is based on Donald A. Wollheim's short story of the same name, begins when cockroaches in Manhattan spread a deadly dieasase that claims the lives of several of the city's children. Entomologist Susan Tyler (Sorvino) creates another breed of insects to kill the roaches, but finds out years later that her genetically mutated specimens have evolved into monsters that can mimic human beings.

Update: Lionsgate has confirmed that the Blu-ray release of Mimic will in fact be an all new Director's Cut featuring 7 additional minutes of restored footage. Updated cover art has been created for this release, as well as a host of special features that were absent from the film's barebones 1998 DVD release. These include:
  • Introduction and Audio Commentary from Director Guillermo del Toro
  • Reclaiming Mimic- Featurette with Del Toro discussing his vision for the film and how he completed the new version.
  • A Leap in Evolution: The Creatures of Mimic- Featurette looking at the creatures in Mimic
  • Back into the Tunnels: Shooting Mimic- Behind the scenes featurette.
  • Deleted/Alternate Scenes
  • Outtakes
  • Gag Reel
  • Storyboard Animatics
  • Theatrical Trailer
Lionsgate has listed Mimic with a SRP of $19.99. Pre-orders should be up on Amazon shortly.

I just watched this again recently. It's aged quite well. Definitely not one of del Toro's best but still enjoyable nevertheless. Whatever happened to Mira Sorvino, anyway? Another '90s star that simply vanished?

NICE! A barebones DVD gets a special edition blu ray upgrade. This should happen more often :-)

Is the blu-ray going to include the director's cut that Del Toro has been talking about for the last couple of years?

I watched this when I was really young and thought it was ok. I've been meaning to watch it again as a lot of people seem to love it so I'm thinking maybe I'd enjoy it more now. This will be the perfect opportunity to check it out again.

Awesome news as I haven't seen this yet and was just thinking about picking up the DVD. Now I can get the Blu.

Don't know if it's still true but the advance word on this I've seen indicates that (for the U.S.) it's a Walmart exclusive. Maybe not, though, since it doesn't say "exclusive" at Walmart.com's order link...

I have the Canadian release from 2009. It's pretty good. @Replacementhead - I hope that's true!

I almost bit the bullet and ordered the Alliance version-- glad I didn't.... I figure all those Canadian releases from Blade to The Faculty will eventually get released here in the U.S.... and hopefully by good quality companies like Lionsgate...

I already have the Alliance release from Canada, and the A/V quality is exceptionally good. But if the U.S release from Lionsgate will have DTS-HD 7.1 MA, then I'll buy it. The Alliance is DTS-HD 5.1 MA.

Almost bought the Canadian or Australian editions a number of times - now I'll hold out to see how this compares.

Sorvino didn't disappear, she's actually got quite a few films in development. You're just unlikely to see her in any major Hollywood film because she's an actress over 35 years which means (in Hollywood) she is 'ancient.' The only roles she's likely offered are "mother of main character" or "wife of main character" -- which is a shame. She's incredibly talented and totally deserves her Academy Award. I expect she finds much meatier acting roles in indie flicks.

I was really hoping for a director's cut (Del Toro has spoken about it for a long time...) but it seems like we'll get the same ol' Theatrical release (which is still a very strong film).

The Alliance release is rather good though there are no special features. I'll be picking this up without a question. Will likely unload my Canadian copy on ebay in the next few months.

Really good to hear that "Mimic" is coming out on the Lionsgate label. The Echo Bridge label has done nothing thus far to help enrich the quality or preserve the integrity of Miramax's films, regardless of any title or genre film the Miramax company has released previously.

wasn't there supposed to be an extended version of this coming out or did del toro drop that idea?

Glad to hear that Mimic is finally getting a US release on Lionsgate (which usually puts out good quality BD's). Mimic is a classic horror flick!

I want this! Good film and the surround track was always fabulous! The lossless track may end up being references.

I know Del Toro had said that his original cut was about 2-3 minutes longer and had a couple of different music cues.

This says that it has an introduction and audio commentary, so hope he sheds light on what went wrong or whether he actually went back and restored it with Lionsgate.

Can't wait!

Great news!! Love that they are including the extras. I skipped this on DVD because it had no extras. Now, I will definitely pick this up. And since it's Liongate release, we can definitely expect this to be priced under $10 soon

My interest in this release has just increased tenfold with the announcement of this being the director's cut. Del Toro's been talking about this for awhile now, and I'm thrilled to see it finally happen.

Never saw this, and for some reason I always got Mimic mixed up with Relic...somewhat similar sounding names and both sci-fi horror/creature movies that came out in '97, I suppose is why. I might feel very compelled to blind buy this one.

This was just upgraded to a DAY 1 for me. Thanks Lionsgate for going with the Director's Cut. I'll be keeping my Alliance disc now just for the collector in me.

I wouldn't consider this film a "guilty pleasure." It's a legitimately well done film. It's subject matter that involves giant bugs but it's not as though it's poorly made. The acting is great, the characters well done and the script/story is very well written. On top of that the effects are particularly good, especially for CGI '97 era. Underrated film.
