Stringer Reaffirms Sony's Commitment to Blu-ray

Posted November 21, 2007 09:49 AM by Josh Dreuth

Blu-ray Disc In an exclusive interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Sir Howard Stringer, CEO of Sony, reaffirmed Sony's commitment to Blu-ray. Citing comments made by Blu-ray partners, he stressed that the technical superiority of Blu-ray makes it the "better format", and even mentioned possible future 3D implementations.

He continued, "I think that's why Steven Spielberg held out his own product from going to HD DVD. Ultimately, if you're passionate about movies, which these DVD collectors are, Blu-ray is the best answer."

The price of Blu-ray player has recently gone down (look for those Black Friday specials), but still remain higher than their HD DVD counterparts. Stringer said not to expect prices to drop any further at this time, but added, "[Blu-ray] isn't the cheaper format, but it is the better format."

Quality, not quantity.
I am glad to hear him say this. He is very dedicated to Blu-ray, and I am excited to see their future
3D implementations

I have always purchased Sony products and have never been disappointed from TV's to stereo equipment to PS3. Sony has not failed me yet, but RCA, Samsung, and some others have...and well Toshiba, I just never liked their products to begin with...

After watching Beowulf IMAX 3d, Im really hoping they can implement something similar on bluray (and yes I am aware that Beowulf is Paramount)

What comments by Blu-ray partners??????

DO NOT get over excited about a PR stunt by the Hdud's at the time when Blu-ray has a SEA full of great releases hitting the shelves.

This is BS, Sony has "re-confirmed commitment"....they were never not commited!!!

Lets keep our eyes on the ball and STOP listening to the PR crap from the Dud's!!!

I'm sick of listening to the weakness by people in this forum when some FUD news story comes out from the Dud camp!!! This needs to stop.

Blu is BEST and Blu will win!!!!

Who cares about hddud's and what they have to say.

I saw this last night in the uk and noticed the paramount logo came on followed by the warner bros logo what gives with that? does it mean its going to be out on both formats?

So if Steven Spielberg held out his own product from going to HD DVD, what does that really mean?
Movies he directed or movies he produced or anything he has any involvment with? He didn't direct Transformers but he was a senior producer so does that mean that Transformers is time released exclusive?
This is one of those questions that i've never found a straight answer to.
Blu is going to rock the holiday shopping season; i'm getting 7 more title in Dec!

I think he got a lot of guff from that "stalemate quote". He's just trying make things right again. I wish he never said that. It's wasn't necessary. Just gave the HD-DUD camp hope, and hope is what's keep that format alive.

@ haushausman - They can have all the hope they want, I'd rather have more and better movies.

it will be interesting to see how much hardware is sold this holday.
i mean new hardware sales, without that software sales means shit.
hdm is still a very small world.
as someone else said without the razors you cant sell razor blades.
blu-ray got to sell hardware this season, i mean get into jp6s pocket book.
blu-ray maybe the better format as far as pq,all means noting if they dont sell hardware.
im talking about standalone players, the ps3 takes care of itself.

Steve Jobs has not lost to Micro$oft. They are winning with the iPod, iTunes, and even the Mac OS is
getting better reviews than Vista.
Sure M$ is bigger, but Apple is not trying to compete against them on that scale. Apple is far more
open to allowing M$ products to work with their machines than M$ is about Apple products.
But this is a different topic.
If you think BDA has not been competing on hardware, you should look at the drastic price-drops in
one year... Toshiba can sell their players at whatever they want cause they have no competition with
HD-DVD manufacturers, but Blu-ray has lots of companies, and they are not willing to lower the price
that drastically. It is still early in the game, and BD is still ahead...

Even though we all perish the thought, this war will last at least as long as it takes for the HDTV market to come into its own. It will probably take at least through X-Mas '08 for enough people to upgrade their sets to HD in order for the HD Disc market to become large enough for a decisive winner to emerge. At 2-1 and even 2.5-1 sales, Blu-Ray would have finished off HD-DVD already if only the HD Disc market were larger. As long as the HD Disc market remains so small, the losing format will continue to press on, in hopes of capturing majority market share as the HD Disc market expands.

Sony is very much behind Blu-Ray, finally Sony is taking off the gloves and punching those HD-DUDer's in the mouth! Blu-Ray has soo much momentum not even the cheap $99 HD-DUD players will be able to save them.
