Starting with X-Men: First Class, Twentieth Century Fox are to include a digital copy
compatible with Android phones and tablets with Blu-ray Discs. The digital copies will
leverage Google's newly acquired Widevine DRM platform, which is also used by Netflix and
other digital video services.
On the new digital copies for Android, Vincent Marcais, senior vice-president for marketing
at Twentieth Century Fox International Home Entertainment said "Given its strong growth
as a mobile operating system, the support for Android is an important move for us because
it further enhances Blu-ray discs as the best way to get your movies to all your screens." It
seems that many studios see the best way of combating declining home video revenues is
to pack more value into the BD release.
Adding features and extra copies is not a new practice for BD, many studios already release
'Triple Play' versions of their movies, and Fox adding an Android copy is an extension of the
bundle. Another extension we could see in the near future is digital copies also leveraging
the new UltraViolet platform which allows people to take their digital copies and play them
on any compatible device regardless of manufacturer or which platform the UV code has
been bought from.
It is extensions of the Blu-ray platform like these ones which will ensure a long and healthy
life for the format, by expanding the remit of the format and including UV and Android
instead of fighting them it will ensure that every movie sees a HD 1080p release on BD
rather than a lower quality streaming only release to avoid piracy.

Disc 7 iTunes edition digital copy
Completely useless if you don't have an android. Why can't they just make a digital copy compatible with all devices? And they wonder why people go to torrent sites.
why can't companies just sell a 1 disc set with just the blu ray movie. 2 disc if it's special features. I don't need dvd or a digital copy. this is getting out of hand.
If they cost a penny, it's too much. Let's not forgot the extra waste in our landfills because of these useless discs. Put the digital copies and such with the DVD package. They're used to compromised audio and video quality. I don't want my blu-rays polluted with this junk.
it is a selling feature for them - then walmart can see the exclusive 3 disc version with bluray, dvd and digital copy instead of a 1/2 disc set and charge more (laugh but they did it for Wolverine). they won't make it easy and just put a mp4/windows media version on a disc that anyone can use because of pirating yet the dvds can still be ripped and end up online anyways - talk about missing the point. might as well just put the digital copies online somewhere and when you buy the movie, you get the website and a code and can download whatever version you like. enough with this 3-6 disc set that has the same movie on all discs.
Some movies ("The American" did, if memory serves..."Inception" may've too) don't include the disks. They just provide the code and have you go to iTunes (etc...). That's less waste. The download takes much longer, but I can live with that. You can make your own copies, but that's too daunting for me (even though ppl claim it's easy). Would like to have a few movies on my Nook Color.
I have an Android and have been waiting for more content to be available, so this is great news to me. I never would use the windows or itunes codes anymore.
I wonder if the android digital copy will be on a dvd disc/insert. It doesn't mention that here, plus the only other way to get a movie on android was pocket-blu, and i don't have internet for my BD player.
they sould just get ride of the dum digital copy and give use the blu ray only or just the dvd and blu ray combo pack of hell give us some special features that would be nice for once really i dont need the dum ditial copy there a waste of HD space and there just a waste of time as well there a waste of plasitc to made i mean come one there puting a ditial copy on a disc then we put it in the trash and after 1 year they go bad anyways its stuiped really.

Exactly! Any blu-ray with dc you buy that has been out for a year the digital copy is expired. But digital copy is all over the cover art and slipcovers. Really stupid. I buy blu-ray for the blu-ray and the superior quality and watching them on a home theater. Not for watching on portables, what kind of lousy experience is that?
I love digital copies on my ipad when I'm on the go. Since I've already seen the movies before, it's not like the experience is ruined or spoiled just because its on a computer or iPad. That kind of thinking is ridiculous. But hey, if you don't want it, don't use it. A lot of people (like me) are always stuck on movie sets with a lot of downtime, so I enjoy being able to watch movies to pass the time.

Sorry maybe you think you are being funny or clever or whatever but you only show ignorance in this comment. They never put one digital copy on each disc they always have both or all three versions on a single disc it is not that hard considering they can fit 5 digital copies on a single DVD. So you clearly do not know how it works.
Not to mention that a lot of times the digital copy is included on the same disc as the DVD or it is just an insert with a code. This is good news because it means more content for people and it means more bitching from nerds like you.
