Blu-ray Sells 2.7M Players in North America

Coming off of huge Blu-ray sales during the early holiday shopping season (which includes Black Friday), market research now shows that consumer have purchased 2.7 million Blu-ray players in the North America region as of November 24th. Additionally, US sales of Blu-ray titles topped 4 million units in November, taking just over two months to achieve the new milestone.
This new data dwarfs reports from the HD DVD group stating the format had sold 750,000 players by a factor of over 7-to-2. Interestingly enough, sales of Blu-ray software sold at a similar rate for the week ending November 25th.

I hope someone at Toshiba is taking notes. HD DUD lost. Do the customers a favor and don't continue
to try to string them along. |

shatta yes this does indeed include the "playstation 3" as a "blu-ray" player ,but also look at the fact that the HD DVD promotional group counts the HD DVD add as a "dedicated" HD DVD player. the HD DVD promotional group started this "semantic's and meaning" of what they Call a HD DVD player and what is not counted as a Blu-Ray player and what is not counted as a "Blu-Ray" player
serves them right if they want to count and bring the term "dedicated player" into the NUMBER's so they can get by with their padding their number's than so be it ,the Media is takeing to it quite well..now there are MEDIA outlets now calling the playstation 3 a "Blu-Ray" player.
And with the Cost's of Both HD DVD and Blu-Ray packaged Media being so pricey for some mainly the J6P shopper...they will wait to buy the Movies when the price drops. so let them bring in attach rates all they want..because as soon as the HDM movie prices drop in price there will be Quite a large number of "Blu-Ray" player's in people's homes already, ready to
purchase more Blu-Ray HDM movies |

I find it funny also that 2.7M to .75M is also similar to the sales ratio.
Again, the PS3 does not matter..... Riiiiiiiight. |

me_inside:
i am going to say this about those number's from the HD DVD promotional group.
the HD DVD promotional group did not fail to mention that they are including the HD DVD add on from the xbox360 because its counted as a:
"dedicated HD DVD player"
well that is alright for them to pad their numbers...with the term "dedicated player"
that's alright because: i would love to see the HD DVD promotional group cry foul over this little bit of news...
Sony Sets Early '08 Blu-ray PC Reader In Launch
By Doug Olenick -- TWICE, 10/11/2007 7:35:00 AM
San Jose, Calif. — Sony will introduce a sub-$200 Blu-ray disc reader for the PC aftermarket in early 2008.
The device will have no burning capabilities for any type of media, said Bob DeMoulin, Sony’s marketing manager, branded optical storage. This will be Sony’s first foray into the BD reader arena.
“A Blu-ray player at a sub-$200 price point becomes real attractive to the consumer. This is how it was done with DVD-ROM,” he said.
Sony’s plans include launching an internal drive, and DeMoulin said there is a great case to be made for an external drive for the expanding notebook market; however, a final decision on the external version has not been made.

HD DVDer's can argue all day long whether the PS3 should be classed as a Blu-ray player, but mine is, and soon my parents and sister will both be buying one as dedicated Blu-ray players. If HD-DVD wish to dismiss us a irrelevant, so be it. |

yes i think the TERM
"dedicated player" that the HD DVD promotional group brought into this format war just to over inflate their install base because they do not want to count the Playstation 3 as a stand alone player or "dedicated player because they only want to count it when it comes to Attach rate's....
so the BDA and in this case "SONY" is playing the same dirty game. counting add on drives as "dedicated players is stupid in my OPINION" but if that is how the HD DVD promotional group wants to bring the number of "HDM" players than so be it ...
i hope than all the CE electronic optical drive makers for Blu-Ray do just that make a "dedicated" Blu-Ray add on player for your PC so the BDA can count those :
"Dedicated" players
in their total number of players too... |

Toshiba and MS opened the pandora box by adding their 360 add on to the player numbers.
IS the Hd DVD 360 add on a dedicated video player? Yes and no, it could be used for software too, but it won't happen, because it would shunt the userbase without add on from it.
The real question is, do you need a 360, a gaming console, to use the add on? YES!
Cue numbering the PS3 as a Blu Ray capable player and crushing their 750k number, you had it coming to you Tosh. |
