Lionsgate Films have revealed that they are planning a Blu-ray release of Todd Haynes' Velvet Goldmine (1998), starring Ewan McGregor, Christian Bale, Eddie Izzard, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, and Toni Collette. Exact technical specs and region coding status for this release are unknown at the moment, but the preliminary release date set by the studio is December 13th.
In 1998, the film was nominated for the prestigious Palme d'Or Award and won Best Artistic Contribution Award at the Cannes Film Festival.
Best Blu-ray news of the year, IMO. This is one of my favorite films, maybe even my favorite film, and it calls out for the high-def treatment. Such a feast for the eyes and ears.
I have been waiting for this movie on BD ever since I bought my BD player 2 years ago. I hope there are special features, but based on the low price--looks doubtful. Fingers crossed and long live glam!
@ jon69: Pulp Fiction and Jackieis Brown were both just released by the same studio at similar (or lower) prices and are loaded with many special features so don't be too doubtful. I just preordered my copy of Velvet Goldmine. I hope Lionsgate does as good a job on it, picture and sound qualitywise as it did on the Tarantino films and on Amelie. (This studio can be rather hit or miss with older catalog titles.)
