This December, Dreamworks and Walt Disney Home Entertainment will bring The Help to Blu-ray. An adaptation of Kathryn Stockett's bestselling novel, the late-summer box-office hit stars Emma Stone (Easy A) as Skeeter Phelan, a young woman who begins to research the lives of the African-American maids serving her and her friends' households.
As Skeeter's investigations - aided in large part by the strong-willed Aibileen Clark (Viola Davis, Doubt) and the outspoken Minny Jackson (Octavia Spencer, Dinner for Schmucks) - grow in stature, the hardships they reveal threaten to unseat the accepted social norms of her 1960's Jackson, Mississippi community.
The discs also have a number of bonus supplements, such as:
Two deleted scenes introduced by director Tate Taylor: "A Senator's Son" and "Keep On Walkin'"
"The Living Proof" music video by Mary J. Blige
Blu-ray exclusive materials -
- The Making of The Help featurette
- In Their Own Words: A Tribute To The Maids Of Mississippi featurette
- Three additional deleted scenes introduced by director Tate Taylor: "Humiliated," "A Book About Jackson," and "Johnny's Home"
The Help streets on December 6th and is available for Amazon pre-order.
I heard this was pretty good, if a bit earnest but I couldn't really get a handle on what it's about. Is it a white guilt/white savior "do over" movie ala Driving Miss Daisy and Dances With Wolves?
Odd that they would include multiple releases just for a dcopy. Unless one comes in BD packaging and the other in a dvd box, it must be some kind of measure of the dcopy market. I already preordered the later when amazon had their early-bird promo. Hope the one I went with doesn't come in dvd packaging.
Just a tad sappy for me in a few parts. Just a few. But overall, a very solid and powerful story.
And Jessica Chastain is having a knock out year. She was my favorite in the movie.
