In November, Lionsgate Home Entertainment will bring the recent Conan the Barbarian reboot to Blu-ray. The film debuted last August and played on both 2D and 3D theatrical screens.
Director Marcus Nispel's film finds Jason Momoa (Game of Thrones) replacing Arnold Schwarzenegger as the Cimmerian hero. Teamed up with a beautiful monastery student (Rachel Nichols, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra), Conan undertakes a quest to avenge the death of his father (Ron Perlman, Sons of Anarchy).
Ultimately, his journey puts him at odds with brutal warring peoples, grotesque creatures, and the evil Khalar Zym (Stephen Lang, Avatar), a warlord determined to rule Hyborea alongside his sorceress daughter Marique (Rose McGowan, Scream).
Really enjoyed this and glad to hear news about a Blu release, hope a region-B compatible edition is available very soon.
BTW I love 3D and will get the 3D edition because I think it's better value in the long run, but this was some of the most wasted 3D I've ever seen.
While watching this it dawned on me that people may be filming in 3D, but they're not filming with 3D IN MIND. I expect things to fly at my face, I expected more blood splatter to fly at me, and I expected the sex scene to be more uncomfortable because it should have felt like you were in the room with them like a pervert- but it was one of the higher quality 3D releases in terms of not sucking I've seen, but was wasted. It was a clean, precise presentation but lacked depth and there were little to no "3D moments". Another complaint I had about this was a shot of *SPOILERS* rose mcgowan's hand twitching, palm up. It looked good in 3D but...they didn't focus on it, it was like 1 or 2 seconds, so your eyes couldn't adjust to the 3D before it cut away. They cut away from her lunging with her metal claw hand as well (this is seen in the trailer) which would have been a brilliant 3D moment if they focused on it, but they didn't.
Still, love sword-and-sandal (and sorcery) movies so as I said earlier I will be picking this up. And as much dismissal as I've given this, it's in now way as bad as other 3D films I've seen.
I haven't seen it, but I'll be making up my OWN mind in November. The trailer looked fantastic! That cover graphic doesn't inspire much excitement though. Never have let anyone tell me what movies I should like, never will.
I love the Conan character, and have all of the books and the Dark Horse Comics reprints of the Marvel ones. I saw this one at the theater, and wasn't impressed. I'm still waiting, probably in vain, for a definitive Conan movie. That includes the Arnold one.
Even though the film is technically flawed and very cheap feeling I still found things to enjoy. The 3D was a big waste with this one, so I'll stick with the 2D version.
This was something of a guilty pleasure for me. I'll likely pick up the 2D version down the line, when the price is low, along with the original Conan the Barbarian film from the eighties.
