Rise of the Planet of the Apes Blu-ray

Posted October 18, 2011 11:08 AM by Josh Katz

20th Century FoxThis December, Fox Home Entertainment will bring Rise of the Planet of the Apes to Blu-ray. The Planet of the Apes prequel focuses on how the relationship between neuroscientist Will Rodman (James Franco, 127 Hours) and genetically-enhanced chimpanzee Caesar (Andy Serkis, King Kong) leads to a global primate revolution.

In addition to Franco and Serkis, Rise of the Planet of the Apes co-stars John Lithgow (Blow Out), Freida Pinto (Slumdog Millionaire), Tom Felton (Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince), and Brian Cox (The Bourne Supremacy).

Directed by Rupert Wyatt (The Escapist), the picture overcame early negative buzz to become one of last summer's sleeper hits, drawing strong commercial and critical support; a large part of that praise is directly attributable to Weta Digital (The Lord of the Rings, Avatar), the Academy Award-winning special effects team that spearheaded the extensive CGI trickery behind Caesar and his army of ape warriors.

While Fox has yet to list the technical specifications for their Blu-ray/Digital Copy combo pack, the set has a number of bonus features, including:
  • Audio commentary by director Rupert Wyatt
  • Audio commentary by writers Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver
  • Deleted scenes:
  • - "Alpha Gets Shot"
    - "Will's Meeting with Lab Assistants"
    - "Will Discovers Caesar Has Solved Puzzles"
    - "Caesar Plays with Bicycle"
    - "Caesar Questions His Identity"
    - "Caesar Bites Off Neighbors Finger"
    - "Will Ignores the Risks of an Airborne Mutated Virus"
    - "Rodney Gives Caesar a Cookie"
    - "Rocket Gets Hosed by Dodge"
    - "Caesar Destroys the Lab and Koba's Attempted Revenge on Jacobs"
    - "Caesar Pushes Helicopter"
    - "Koba with Shotgun"
  • Behind the scenes featurettes:
  • - Pre-vis for The Future
    - Capturing Caesar – Script to Screen
    - Studying the Genius of Andy Serkis
    - Multi-Angle: Rocket Cookie Scene
    - A New Generation of Apes
    - Breaking Motion Capture Boundaries
    - Breaking New Sound Barriers: The Music and Sound Design of Rise of the Planet of the Apes
  • Ape Facts featurettes:
  • - "Chimpanzee"
    - "Gorilla"
    - "Orangutan"
  • Character concept art gallery
  • Three theatrical trailers
Rise of the Planet of the Apes streets on December 13th.

Best movie of the summer and of 2011 overall so far. If I could only buy 1 blu-ray all year, this would be the one.

Day one purchase. Next to X-Men First Class this was the best movie of 2011.

Liked this a lot, but I might hold off and wait for the set, assuming the next two are as good as this one.

I love the 'Planet of the Apes' franchise and this is the BEST one ever! This movie is fantastic on every level. And I love the title 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes'. People are familiar with 'Planet of the Apes'. They are NOT familiar with '....the Apes'. That's why FOX made the WISE choice to insert 'Planet of....' in the title and I am very glad they did.

@insomniac013 I guarantee you did not watch the whole film in the trailer. The trailer for this film was extremely misleading especially in regards to tone and characterization.

I thought this movie would have sunk in the box office at the begining of summer. Turns out that I was wrong.
Day 1 for me.

"I thought this movie would have sunk in the box office at the begining of summer."

Maybe it would have...it came out at the end of summer, though.

Nicely done cover for a worthy entertainment. I'm contemplating buying the Play.com steelbook myself, though this (slipcovered?) Regular edition looks good too.

I am loving the Three theatrical trailers, loved the music in them. But if they are not on the disc, I will not buy this movie. The trailers sure did annoy me in theaters and on TV, due to being on too much, but I love that they are included unlike Green Lanterns even more annoying marketing.

This was the best of the summer blockbusters to me, superior to any of those superhero pictures. I'll pick this up at some point when it's cheap.

What is so "horrible" about the cover art? It's simple and iconic, much like the original movies. If someone can release this artwork on a Steelbook I'll be on it like a chimp on a banana.

It's a good movie, but even with the apes, it feels like a regular zombie/apocalyptic movie.

Caesar Will Rise
 - Oct 19, 2011

Vote plusVote minus

This is a day 1 or first week buy for me. Excellent story, characters, direction, and capped with marvelous visual effects. Andy Serkis as Caesar simply owned it all. I do hope that they keep it in the original aspect ratio. I must admit that Fox ticked me off a bit when they "opened up" Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader from 2:35 to 1:78. I have gotten used to it somewhat, but I would still grab another Blu-ray of that film if it had the original 2:35 ratio. I hope they leave the Apes ratio alone. Awesome bonus feature list too. Featurettes and/or documentaries, that's what I like to see.

Although I planned to see this in the cinema and actually managed to see the trailer at the movies I simply didn't get a chance - Day 1 without hesitation.
