Captain America, as the name implies, is the most blatantly patriotic superheroes of all time, and when he first appeared in December of 1940, he made his impact by punching Nazi leader Adolph Hitler in the jaw. It was one year later that the United States found itself involved in the Second World War, and children across the country turned to Captain America: The First Avenger to help their family and friends overseas defeat the Axis powers. Today, Marvel's latest comic-turned-movie star is out on Blu-ray, and just as patriotic as ever.
For the Captain America: The First Avenger Blu-ray review , staff reviewer Martin Liebman commented, "The movie is playfully fun, an addictive watch, and loaded with action, but still smart enough to offer fair character development and a good plot line, both of which aid in enhancing the movie's dual finales and setting it up for future installments in the Marvel universe." He continued, "Paramount's Blu-ray 2D release of Captain America yields fantastic picture quality, a potent 7.1-channel lossless soundtrack, and a fine assortment of extras."
Today, the special effects found Jurassic Park still hold up to the untrained eye and engage you in a world that humans never saw nor will ever see again. The film stands the test of time as the greatest dinosaur film ever, and one of the greatest Spielberg films yet to be released. Universals release of the Jurassic Park Ultimate Trilogy on Blu-ray deserves a spot in everyone's collection.
Staff reviewer Jeffrey Kaufman commented in his Jurassic Park Ultimate Trilogy Blu-ray review , "The first Jurassic Park stands as one of the most iconic films of the last several decades, not simply for its technological innovations but for Spielberg's immaculate mastery of craft." He continues, "This new 3 BD set is packed to the gills with supplementary material, features fantastic video and reference quality audio."
Winnie the Pooh continues to be one of Disney's most wholesome characters – and its easy to see why. Ever essence of his character is displayed right on the surface – from the indifferent mannerisms to his plump round belly and lack of pants – Pooh is exactly what you see, and nothing more. More so, Disney kept this bear in 2D – hand drawn, that is - and resisted the urge to turn this feature into a lifeless CGI bastardization (yes, there is a 3D Pooh bear out there). There will be no Emmy nods for this outing, but it's a very strong release that will grasp the attention of a child and warm a parent's heart at the same time.
For the Winnie the Pooh Blu-ray review , staff reviewer Kenneth Brown commented, "It's a sweet, charming addition to the Disney animated family; one young children and nostalgic adults will fall in love with. The studio's Blu-ray release is terrific too. It doesn't have much supplemental bite, that's for sure, but its video transfer is absolutely flawless and its DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround track is exceptionally engaging."
Great week for my collection, but a bad week for my wallet. Dazed, Rare exports, Attack the block, & The City of life and death all bought all coming via AMZ.
Captain America arrived in the mail yesterday (again, GREAT job on blu-ray deliveries this month, USPS!). I'll wait on Jurassic Park until the price comes down. Fingers crossed for a Black Friday deal!
Francis Ford Coppola's 1970s classic The Conversation is due to arrive from my Amazon preorder today.
Beyond that there are several titles out this week that I'll buy, some sooner, some later, including...
Captain America (2D)
Island of Lost Souls
The Jurassic Park Ultimate Trilogy
A Serbian Film (maybe)
Dazed and Confused
Identification of a Woman
City of Life and Death
Captain America 3D, Attack the Block, and Jurassic Park Trilogy! Gonna be an action packed weekend for me! Will pick up Winnie the Pooh when there is a price drop. Cant justify that short run time with what they are charging for it.
I might get the first Jurassic Park when available as a stand-alone, and Dazed & Confused during the Barnes and Noble sale which I think will be in November.
Island of Lost Souls, Dazed and Confused, Identification of a Woman--yay Criterion!
Winnie the Pooh
Jurassic Park
and some of these horror titles look interesting.
Ha to those waiting for standalone releases of the Jurassic Park films. Back to the Future was released a year ago today and those still haven't seen separate release.
Ok... who has had wet dreams about kicking the Nazi ass? I wish I was Capt. America during WWII. I'd show those bastard Nazi iceholes how to disappear from this planet. I got CA today at Best Buys. Can't wait to watch it tonight on my kickass 3D groove tube. :sniperR:
Speaking of jurassic park, why was futureshoip's exclusive steelcase the size of a regular DVD case? I was all ready to pay the extra money to get it but saw the extra height of the case and said F this, So i went and got the regular bluray release from best buy...Still wish universal would have made better packaging...wouldn't a simple 3 disc keep case have looked so much better?
This is a great week, mainly for Jurassic Park and Captain America. However, it looks like my girlfriend wants to buy me Captain America this week and get me Jurassic Park for Christmas, so they WILL be in my collection, and I can't wait to see the PQ on all the films!
