Next year, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will bring Stripes to Blu-ray. The sophomore collaboration between actor Bill Murray (Lost in Translation) and director Ivan Reitman (Ghostbusters) focuses on a slacker (Murray) who enlists in the military as a means of meeting women and finding direction - in that order.
Sadly I have to agree with those who were unhappy with this release. I purchased it and felt the lack of adding the theatrical cut at the very least was a major letdown. The extended edition is awful, the film goes in an entirely different direction for a short time, which is unfunny and could understand why it was cut in the first place, because it was incredibly stupid. The film then gets back on track, but the extended footage is simply forgettable. This was one of the few instances where I bought the blu-ray, watched it, and quickly dumped it regretting having purchased it in the first place. Don't get me wrong, I loved Stripes, its a hilarious comedy, and John Candy steals the show as always, but what Sony should have done is made the extended edition a Best Buy exclusive and then offer everyone the theatrical edition instead, which I gladly would buy.
Thanks for the input on the extended cut guys. I'm of the "less is sometimes more" school of thought so I appreciate the info. Looks like I'll be passing on this one, which sucks because I love this movie.
Extended cut is a joke, but not a funny one. Turns the movie into an Abbott and Costello retrospective. Why the hell wouldn't they include the theatrical cut? Are they nuts? Not a chance I'd waste my money on this
The exclusion of the theatrical cut is inexcusable, but more so, the horrendous PQ! The BB edition literally looks like an upconverted DVD. When I bought it, I immediately did an A-B comparison with my DVD (glad I didn't dump it) and found only extremely marginal improvement in the BD PQ! Very disappointing and easily THE worst BD transfer in my 600+ blu-ray collection!
