Inside the Making of Cars Blu-ray

Posted December 21, 2007 10:44 AM by Josh Dreuth

Walt Disney PicturesSound and Vision Magazine recently sat down with director John Lasseter to discuss the process of producing the recently released 'Cars' Blu-ray disc. The legendary co-founder of Pixar Studios described what excites him about the high definition format, and why he decided to include Blu-ray only features, like the "Car Finder" game, on the release.

Lasseter commented, "I love making the movies for the theater, but I also love making them to be seen at home. With Blu-ray, all the high-definition and the amazing sound helps bring out the details — and we really, really stress the details. The amount of data this format can handle lets us go so much deeper into the story — the characters and their world — but also lets us talk about the filmmaking."

Choice quotes from the article:

"What's exciting for me as a filmmaker is that this is the resolution we made the film at. So it really feels like you're watching it straight from Pixar. Just look at the clarity of this. Fantastic. The amount of data in the image is staggering.

"When you get used to seeing things at this higher resolution, you can't go back. I think Blu-ray is worth having for that alone. The difference between VHS and DVD is nothing compared to the difference between DVD and Blu-ray as far as the image quality goes. Especially when you watch a Pixar movie where it was digitally-direct — wow, the picture is just so, so much better."

AWESOME! John Lasseter is one of the people I look up to. I think he is an amazing person and he
makes such amazing films. I hope that someday I can make films with him, at his level of detail and
quality.
Thanks for the fantastic article.

I think it's great to see directors endorsing blu-ray for it's superior quality, and I applaud Disney and Pixar for supporting our format. Movies should really be seen the way that they were filmed, and I'm so glad that blu-ray provides that for us.

i cant wait for more pixar films on blu-ray, i use ice age 2 as a show piece for my tv at 1080p,as the animations are unrealistically sharp and bright,it looks amazing, but the animation quality in a pixar film is much higher than that,so i'll be converting more people to blu-ray soon, when they see it for themselves.

The is one of the best Blu-ray Movies made. A must have as it is a 5 out a 5 right down the line. The Vidio Quuality is just Breath Taking to say the least. Diseny and Pixar movies are Master at a standard above everybody period. They are priced fairly as well compared to everyone else. I couldn't be happier with their movies, and I have pushased most of Disney and Pixar films to date. If everybody else would follow their fine example. They actually seem to care about what their films look like, and take great pride in their work and it really shows.
