Hollywood Reporter Predicts 2008 Win for Blu-ray

Posted December 21, 2007 01:52 PM by Josh Dreuth

Blu-ray DiscAs this year comes to a close, Hollywood Reporter is making a few predictions about what they expect to see from Hollywood next year. With regards to the format war in 2008, they predict, "Blu-ray blows away HD DVD". Citing the strength of sales as the major reasons for it eventual success, they also suggested that the PlayStation 3 is a major driving force for the format.

More notable about the article is that current Blockbuster trends show Blu-ray being favored 70% to the rival format at stores featuring both products. With those statistics, Blockbuster is sure to maintain their current company policy to support Blu-ray.

shit, I could have predicted that one! I know they will win! The war will be over once the paramount deal is over. Everyone will be making BD while paramount will be the only one left out in the cold...

anyone know Netfilx statistics? I rent all of my Blu-rays there... In the Netflix envelopes (which are red...booo...lol) they had advertisements for HD DVD

Did anyone notice the poll at the bottom of the article? It asks which format will prevail and 82% say Blu-Ray! Only 15% say HD-DVD. 4% say dual format. Isn't it time for someone to clean the handwriting off the wall so we can get on with the Blu revolution?

I have a feeling the WB is going to let this war play out a little longer just to make a few extra dollars off of the failing HD-Dud. I don't see them going Blu in January as originally suggested. Good to see Hollywood seeing the light.

I sure hope they are right too? WB better make the right choose.I would like to have my favorites on the best format please.I would like to see Chunk do The Shuffle Truffle in HD?I would like to see the 2 Corey's battling Vampires in HD? I would like to see Gizmo and Stripe in HD. And Universal please ditch the red and come to the Blu side. I do hope it will be a Blu 2008?

YOU KNOW WHAT HAS ALWAYS BEEN WEIRD TO ME, AND JUST PLAIN MAKES NO SENSE, BLOCKBUSTER IS PRETTY MUCH EXCLUSIVE TO BLU-RAY, AND THE WEINSTEIN COMPANY IS EXCLUSIVE TO BLOCKBUSTER, SO WHY IS IT EXACTLY WEINSTEIN IS WITH HD-DVD? WHEN BLOCKBUSTER WONT SELL THE FORMAT THEY ARE BACKING??

tronsdisc
 - Dec 21, 2007

Blockbuster only carries HD DVD's in 250 stores thats why they rent more Blu-ray discs than HD DVD's. X-Box out sells PlayStation 3 so does the Nintendo DS and PS2.

We don't need to lie to win the format war.

tronsdisc - "Blu-ray being favored 70% to the rival format at stores featuring both products."

This isn't cumulative - It's at stores with both HD-DVD and Blu-ray that Blu-ray's winning 70-30.

Great news!!! And now that Apple is rumored to be including Blu-ray players/burners as an option this will help out a lot as well. Dell is already including Blu-ray players in some of their laptop and desktop computers. When major companies like Dell and Apple include Blu-ray drives with their computers it's a no brainer who's going to win the format war. Go Blu!!
