Posted February 28, 2012 06:05 AM by Webmaster

Blu-ray MoviesBritish distributors Channel 4 have revealed that they are preparing a Blu-ray release of director James Ivory's A Room with a View (1985), starring Helena Bonham Carter, Julian Sands, Maggie Smith, and Denholm Elliott. The preliminary release date set by the distributors is June 4th.

Note: In the United States, A Room with a View was released on Blu-ray by BBC Home Video in 2007. However, this release is now out of print.

Let's hope this release presents us with a much improved video image than the last release.

I didn't think the Warner/BBC release was that bad at all. It looks appropriately grainy and looks like an early 80's film. That said, a new master could certainly look better, but could also be easily ruined with too much dnr.
that bd is obviously super OOP, so good news for people that have wanted this film on bd that never had a chance to get the earlier bd. the bad news is that all previous Channel 4 bds have been locked I believe. They issued some really early bds and then fell off the earth for the past 3 or 4 years. good to see they are at least releasing something again.

The NA BBC Blu-ray was actually quite good looking. Natural film-like image. But I can understand how the overall softness and lack of gloss can turn some people off. Howard's Ends was the same way. But a new transfer would certainly be awesome. I'm very glad to see it get a new release, even if it is region B. Any Merchant/Ivory blu-ray is good news.

FYI, there's actually a Netherlands release which is identical to the NA BBC release. Region free too, for those interested.

Inspector Toschi: But doesn't the Netherlands release include a DTS-HD MA track while the BBC Region A only has a standard lossy HD mix? Actually, the only DVD or Blu-ray release to present the film in its proper original aspect ratio is the Region 2 Arthaus/KINOWELT DVD from Germany. The film was shot and exhibited at 1.66:1. (See the book, MERCHANT IVORY'S ENGLISH LANDSCAPES, authored by the filmmakers' friend John Pym, who confirms the OAR.) Even though DP Tony Pierce-Roberts supervised the BBC Region 1 DVD transfer, the image was opened up to 1.78:1. Here's hoping that Channel 4 can get everything right.

won't surprise me a bit if it's the same as the BBC. I mean it's still the UK after all.

this movie was ok but man that scene with all the boys nekked with the priest was just bizarre.
