While the technical and supplementary specifications are still unknown for most of these features, Disney's EVP of product management Lori MacPherson noted that, "We receive many requests and comments from consumers seeking specific titles they'd like to own on Blu-ray and, as such, we carefully selected a number of popular films that will satisfy demand from fans worldwide...As we grow our Blu-ray catalog we will continue to utilize the best technologies to provide the most pristine and immersive in-home experience of our films."
This is the most fantastic news, there are so many of my wants in this list (Evita, ect) and it is so good to finally see Disney doing some of their live-action catalog (Pete's Dragon, Absent Minded Professor). Hats off....I just wish that three titles were on this list: Mary Poppins, Bedknobs and Broomsticks and The Happiest Millionaire. But with a list like this, I can't complain.
about time! Ed Wood, Under the Tuscan Sun, High Fidelity, Aristocats, Rescuers are definates for me. Wish they would release 20,000 Leagues, Parent Trap, Mary Poppins and more of the Classic Live action films.
Color of Night
Guilty as Sin
He Got Game
Mr. Holland's Opus
One Good Cop
Three Men and a Baby
Three Men and a Little Lady
Up Close and Personal
This is indeed great news. But I echo those who ask yet again where is 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea?? And Old Yeller?? And original Parent Trap?? And Pollyanna??? The faves from the 50s for us original Mickey Mouse Clubbers!!!
BRAVO! Disney, Bravo! When I first read the headline about "Disney Catalog Releases", my first thought was, "More second tier animation with classic live action left on the shelf". Then I saw the titles...WOW! It's like they read my wish list.
This is good news that so many films from Disney's live-action catalog will be released this year. I'm especially looking forward to The Color of Money, Arachnophobia and The Hand that Rocks the Cradle. I'll possibly consider a few others.
While is great that Disney is releasing more live action films, I'm disappointed with some of the animated releases. Where is Tarzan and Finding Nemo? I prefer those over films like Home on the Range and Atlantis.
well it's a start at least. gotta give Disney props for that.
there may actually be hope for The Parent Trap, Pollyanna, 20,000 leagues under the sea, That Darn Cat, Old Yeller, Swiss family Robinson, etc. etc. etc.
OMG!!!! A lot of our wishes will be coming true this year!!! I just hoping Disney does this right by carrying over or creating new extras. My wallet is not going to be happy. I might need to visit IKEA for some more shelf space. =) Great start to the weekend!!!
OMG, once again doing a two movie package of a very good Disney film, "Pocahantus" with its sequel no one Earth gives a rat's ass about. I wouldn't mind so much EXCEPT that it'll jack the price up dramatically for only one film I'm ever going to watch
Although it isn't in the list above 'Newsies' is also coming to Blu-ray! The pre-order went up today for Jun 19th (same day as Christian Bale's awesome 'Empire of the Sun')
What an aweosme list! That being said, DISNEY, ARE YOU LISTENING??? Do NOT, I repeat, DO NOT EVEN CONSIDER releasing these films without Bonus Features like you did with 'The Rocketeer'. Now, if none were ever on the DVD and nothing was done at the time of release, that's forgiveable as long as we at least get the trailer. But for films like 'Dick Tracy', even if they don't generate any new features, there was a plethora of things on HBO and on the Disney channel at the time. I had hours of making-of shows taped from TV back then, and when the DVD came out, it was bare. Disney, I love ya, but don't test my patience!! And reissue the Rocketeer with all those features you're holding back!!
GROSSE POINTE BLANK!!! wow, never thought i'd see the day. um, what about the rumors for 2012 releases of Tarzan/Mulan/Robin Hood/Finding Nemo? i know Nemo is being brought back to theaters later this year in 3D. guess it's sit and wait...
The only way Song Of The South gets a release is if the NAACP, AFLCIO, and every other organization that has a problem with race relations, gets behind it. Since none of these organizations ever agree on anything, means we will never see it.
This is definately the best annoucnements in a long time, way to kick up the pace disney!
I wish Pocahontas wasnt moved back from its june 12th date(might have to go ahead and just pick up the import)
But there are quite a few titles from the animated classics line, i didnt expect to be seeing this year, including Treasure planet, home on the range, Atlantis and brother bear.
And fantastic seeing quite a few of the live action catalog comming out as well. Would have loved to seen a Black Hole announcement but i am sure thats being saved till the remake comes out late 2013.
I am actually wanting every movie they have on this list(animated or liveaction), so this is great news!
Don't forget guys Beatty said at the Q&A we hosted at work last year that the directors cut of dick tracy is what you saw on the screen when the movie came out, so hopefully that bs aintitcoolnews rumor doesnt rear its ugly head again. Beatty has always had final cut on his movies.
I LOVE Reese Witherspoon and movies set in Africa so I wish they would release "A Far Off Place!" Also, where is "Darby O'Gill and the Little People," "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids" and "Stakeout?" Still, I am excited to eventually own "The Color of Money," "The Horse Whisperer," "Ed Wood," "Grosse Pointe Blank," "Arachnophobia," "Dick Tracy" and "The Hand That Rocks the Cradle" on BD!
Yes, the list should have been bigger (let's go back to the original book title: Who *snuffed* Roger Rabbit???); but I preordered Sister Act 1 & 2, Treasure Planet & Home on the Range (it may be the worst DAC ever but it's still a DAC). Waiting for all the other DACs (despite being stuck with Pocahontas 2 ) plus Evita, Pete's Dragon (not considered a DAC despite significant animation), Arachnophobia & Dick Tracy.
- Sister Act / Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit
- Home on the Range
- Treasure Planet
- The Aristocats
- Adventures in Babysitting
- Grosse Pointe Blank
- High Fidelity
- Judge Dredd
- Pete's Dragon
- Pocahontas / Pocahontas 2: Journey to a New World two-movie package
- The Rescuers / The Rescuers Down Under two-movie package
- Atlantis: The Lost Empire
- Brother Bear
- The Santa Clause Trilogy
has anyone else noticed that disney has also put quite a few of its animated/live action titles in HD on amazon streaming now as well. Last night noticed they had added movies such as Honey I shrunk the kids, Mulan etc to the amazon streaming section as well as others. perhaps a Honey tripple feature with the two theatrical films and one direct to video film will be comming in 2013
WOW, this is excellent news-some really great catalog titles in there. I was hoping for the 1998 Mighty Joe Young and Deep Rising , but I'm happy to be getting Sister Act 1 and 2, Adventures in Babysitting, Ghosts of the Abyss 3D, Judge Dredd, Arachnophobia and Dick Tracy.
You would think that Paramount would take a clue from Disney and do a big catalog blu-ray release wave. They are after all celebrating their 100th anniversary but you would never know it with the measly few titles they announced outside of the Indiana Jones films. Paramount is hands down one of the worst studios when it comes releasing back catalog hits. They should hang their heads in shame. Even Universal's efforts in promoting their 100th anniversary have been more impressive.
Though there are a lot on here I want to own, I think I will hold off until this Disney All Access thing kickstarts. If they are going to be offering purchase of movies in HD for streaming from my all access account, than a lot of these are movies I would like to own, but don't really care about having a hard copy of.
Give me Roger Rabbit, or heads will roll...
Other than the lack of that, I'll pick up The Color of Money, Treasure Planet (totally underrated), and Arachnophobia for sure. Maybe I'll do blind buys on Dick Tracy and a few others.
Ed wood is awesome and I can't wait for it but really Disney really King of all mouses . WTF . Can u please Please please I'm begging you release Little Mermaid and Tarzan on Blu ray b4 I die. Why so slow with these releases . I know I'll be gone before Mighty Joe Young gets blu treatment so i won't even bother
Even in the year of its 25th Anniversary, we don't get a decent, widescreen copy of the Patrick Dempsey classic "Can't Buy Me Love?" I have waited years for even just a decent DVD copy...For an 80s teen movie fan like myself, this is insulting. Although they would be MOST welcome, I don't even need a bunch of special features. Just a solid Anamorphic transfer would do, thank you very much.
I hope that Pirates of the Caribbean On Stranger Tides will get re-issued on Blu-ray on the 10th anniversary of Pirates of the Caribbean The Curse of the Black Pearl's theatrical release, with Never Before Seen Deleted Scenes and Extended Scenes from Pirates of the Caribbean On Stranger Tides and with the short film called "Tales of the Code: Wedlocked" included with it.
The only two that are listed that intrigue me are ED WOOD and DICK TRACY. Although I probably won't get rid of my Ed Wood DVD since it was signed by Juliet Landau, so it might have some value down the road.
Great start but, Disney has still failed us!! It's the 20th Anniversary for The Mighty Ducks and The Muppet Christmas Carol. Not to mention 2011 had GREAT 20th Anniversary's as well White Fang, Shipwrecked and Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken. Disney, LISTEN to a HUGE Disney fan of the 80's and the 90's!! My generation is getting into their 30's and we want our childhood favorites NOW!! Never Cry Wolf, Return to Oz, The Journey of Natty Gann, The Great Mouse Detective, Flight of the Navigator, Oliver and Company, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, Cheetah, The Little Mermaid, DuckTales the Movie: Treasure of the Lost Lamp, White Fang, Shipwrecked, Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken, The Mighty Ducks, Aladdin, The Muppet Christmas Carol, Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey, A Far Off Place, The Adventures of Huck Finn, Cool Runnings, The Three Musketeers, Iron Will, Heavyweights, Tall Tale, A Goofy Movie, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Hercules, George of the Jungle, Mulan, The Parent Trap, Mighty Joe Young, and Tarzan. We want them all NOW!!!!
Oh, this excellent news!!!! I'm not going to buy all of them, but the majority are on my wishlist! ^.^
Please release The Hunchback of Notre-Dame and Hercules on Blu-ray!!!! Those ones really need new home video releases!
Though it's practically a certainty most will be overpriced, regurgitations rather than fully respectable HD upgrades deserving Disney's premium, it's still great to see Disney finally getting into catalog titles with BD. I'm definitely in for The Santa Clause films, Hocus Pocus, Phenomenon, and Gross Pointe Blank, even if I will be paying more than what other studios charge for recycled, outdated transfers.
I can honestly say that this list made my week - Adventures in babysitting? Newsies? Sister Act 1&2? Petes dragon? Hocus Pocus?? Romy and Michelle!!?? Not to mention Dick Tracy, Home on the range, Treasure planet, The Santa clause, Beaches and Ed wood....Some of my most wanted titles are on this list and I can't WAIT! Thank you Disney! You will be getting a lot of my money this year!
While this extensive list is very exciting, I hope that Disney will also release collections of their animated short films soon a la Walt Disney Treasures. I'd also really like to see Hunchback and Hercules soon!
saw Ed Wood and shouted out loud with excitement. i wonder if it will tie in with the release of warners dark shadows? Hocus Pocus as well. fantastic news. plus all the classics its going to get expensive.
Everyone's got their favorites, and everyone's got the Disney films they couldn't care less about... but I think we all win with this news. I know there's definitely some I've been waiting for, and my younger sister will definitely love to hear some of her old-favorites like Babes In Toyland are coming to BLU.
Some of you asking to release MORE movies than the FORTY+ that just got announced are pretty stupid. I hope the movies you want take another four years to come out. Tons of great releases on here, including a lot that people have been begging for, and now that you get those, you can't even take the time to appreciate them before complaining that titles from the 60's aren't on the same list.
So many outstanding titles. Hocus Pocus is especially exciting for me as it's one of my favorite Halloween movies the entire family can enjoy. Definitely picking up all the animated masterpieces and Pete's Dragon. Evita, Dick Tracy, Arachnophobia, Ed Wood.
This does seem to be shaping up to be the year of Disney Blu-ray.
