James Cameron's Titanic Available for Pre-Order

Posted April 13, 2012 02:38 PM by Josh Katz

ParamountAmazon has listed both the 3D and 2D versions of Titanic for Blu-ray pre-order.

The online retailer is listing the 3D edition as a Blu-ray 3D/Blu-ray/UltraViolet Digital Copy combo pack and the 2D edition as a Blu-ray/DVD/UltraViolet Digital Copy combo pack.

However, at this moment, Paramount Home Media Distribution and Twentieth Century Fox have not released any of the technical or supplementary specifications for each of the respective packages.

Note: While the distributors have also not set a firm street date, Amazon is listing its release date as September 14th. Furthermore, Amazon is offering a $3 credit to those who pre-order either the 2D or 3D version.

The pre-order cost for the Titanic 3D is currently $27.99 (or 49% off its SRP of $54.99), while the 2D combo pack costs $21.99 (or 51% off its SRP of $44.99).

I went ahead and preordered the 3D set. At $27.99, it's a pretty good deal. BTW, did anyone else get a $3 gift card when they ordered the 3D Blu-ray through Amazon? I don't know why, but it said my order qualified for one.

I also pre-ordered right away and it said 14 September release as well as $3 Amazon credit for Amazon orders. I didn't see anything about the credit on the Titanic product page, however it must be some bonus with the purchase. I have not received the $3 credit yet, so it will be with the Blu-ray release of Titanic in September. Can't wait!

with 3 more off it is 24.99. A good deal for 3D,regular blu, digital, and UV digital. I am using UV alot more lately, it gives you the 14.99 HD own copy at place of choosing, I choose amazon, and then you have it in the clouds forever.

I'm sorry, but this is the most over-rated movie of all time. Forget the sales numbers. It's an average disaster movie with a silly love story involving a way too young for the part Leo DiCaprio. It was tricky marketing at best, combining a famous disaster everyone knows about and a chick flick all in one, which led to lots of people going to see it.

Like others have said, I'm more interested in where "True Lies" and "The Abyss" are. Oh, that's right, Cameron is too busy diving to the bottom of the ocean yet again.

@david_blu: Paramount has the US rights on Titanic, Fox has international. This was always the case (including the original theatrical release in 1997). Paramount came to the rescue when Fox saw the budget balloon on this one. Obviously that was before the movie's release.

I saw "Titanic" in full for the first time in 3D last week. Loved it. Truly epic film. The 3D was VERY well done. Ironically, I think the best 3D films I've seen are "Titanic" and "Lion King".

As much as I'd love the 3D, I don't see myself buying one of those TVs. I need to buy a new computer and an apartment first lol.

I'll pre-order the 2D. The $3 coupon drops it to $19, and if the price drops to $20 by shipping, which it likely will, I'll be picking it up for $17

The cover art here isn't all that bad compared to the one they did for the DVD a few years ago. At least we're not staring into Jim Cameron's sweaty armpit as he reaches out to grab that Oscar.

Calibraexis
 - Apr 14, 2012

Vote plusVote minus

Thank goodness that cover is not final! what a bad idea that would be. It seems like Cameron was done with this film when the special edition dvd came out, and he was quoted as saying something to the effect of,"I'm finally done with this film." Not the case, so it seems. 3-D was not the way to treat this otherwise fine film. I, too would love to see Cameron honor this film with an extended version, but I will not be holding my breath for that. I'd have an easier time surviving the Titanic's sinking!

BluPix
 - Apr 14, 2012

Vote plusVote minus

I've tentatively preordered both the 2D and 3D versions of James Cameron's Titanic. I don't have a 3D system yet; I've been on the fence about buying a blu-ray player (in the near future) and television (maybe next year) with 3D playback capability. In the case of this film, the 3D package seems to be a somewhat better value, though I'll really need to know what supplements are in each package and how good the 3D effects on the BD (as opposed to in the film) actually are, so I can make a more informed decision.

I agree that the cover graphic is rather underwhelming. There have been several posters and home video covers that of this film that were more intriguing.

In any case, this would make a nice double-bill with another film I added to my collection recently: A Night to Remember.

The 3D made this much more entertaining. Apparently, those that haven't actually seen the 3D version don't truly realize this. The sheer scope of the Titanic is amazing with the additional depth. In particular, the scene where she climbs over the railing and is about to jump off the back of the ship is greatly enhanced by the 3D effect. "Damn, that's far down!"

Excited to finally add this to my blu ray collection, I wish the $3 can be taken off the order when I place it now and not get it when the order ships I mean really at that point I won't care about $3 and I wish this would be released earlier like June or July, September is 5 months away boo I won't bother pre ordering I'll just day one pick it up in store!

Ray O. Blu
 - Apr 14, 2012

Vote plusVote minus

If you pick it up in-store on day one, you'll just end up paying $3 more for it then, right?
Why would Amazon give everyone that preorders it their $3 now? People would just use the $3 on something else, then cancel their Titanic preorder. It's smart business practice on their behalf.

3D adds little to a movie like this! To me it was the story! I agree that the cover art is not so good and so let's hope the transfer includes a restoration to ensure the highest visual quality and not a screw up like Gladiator and so many others. I would never preorder anything anymore until I see the reviews and the price comes town.

reidw
 - Apr 15, 2012

Vote plusVote minus

I too think that the cover should be a shot of the ship. However if that is the image that is going to be used, it is strong, emotional, powerful and touching. Remember Titianic was so successful not because it was a great movie with good special effects or an accurate telling of the story but because it appealed to almost every movie going segment of the public. That includes young girls who became emotionally involved in the story of Jack Dawson and Rose.

Up in Halifax at the cemetery where over 130 victims of the disaster are buried there is a grave identified as J. Dawson. For months after the movie came out fresh flowers were being left daily on the grave. Whoever did that would respond to this cover.

And let me ask you all here, would you ever NOT buy a movie because of its cover art? Does it really matter?

tomrule123
 - Apr 15, 2012

Vote plusVote minus

From the look of things, it seems both the 3D and the 2D versions will have the films split in two (probably the reason why there are no DVD versions provided on the 3D set- to keep the 3D set's cost down). Personally, I love it when a film this long gets split in two. Optimal video and audio always put to its advantage.
