Most of the data have been recovered, please use the site as normal while we gradually merge in the missing data. If you were a newly registered member but your account was lost in the crash, then please register again with the same email and your collection will be automatically restored. We deeply apologize for all the inconvenience.
This news post has now been unstuck and closed for comments, we refer to this forum thread for further details and questions.
8th of June
We are extremely sad to let you know that we've experienced 7 weeks of database loss. 7
weeks ago we moved to a new much improved server, but unfortunately earlier today the
hard drives of the database crashed (was using RAID). On the old server we did daily
backups, but since we changed server and setup, the old server backup solution didn't work
anymore. We have been discussing the new backup system on a daily basis, but hadn't yet implemented it, so the timing couldn't have been worse.
What is missing the last 7 weeks
HT Gallery updates and comments
All forum activity
New user registrations
Cast & crew
Any other database data other than mentioned below
So far we have managed to recover
The complete Blu-ray database
The complete Blu-ray review database
The close to complete DVD database
The majority of the theatrical database
The complete movie ratings
The complete price trackings
The complete price history
The complete Blu-ray user reviews
The complete theatrical, hardware and games user reviews
A few weeks of news
Most of the collections (work in progress)
A few weeks of news
We are so terribly sorry about this and we feel the worst we have done in years, we've
been literally sick to our stomachs and working non-stop when we realized we couldn't recover the hard drive and
only had an old backup.
We would like to give our deepest apologies to our members, because it's also your data
we have lost and what we feel the absolutely worst about. Blu-ray.com is built as a community
and wiki and is nothing without its members, collectors and contributors. We basically beg on our knees that you update your last 7 weeks of collection updates and other things you have lost. New Android collectors will have to register again and re-add their complete collections
We will try to make it up to you the very best we can.
We have a complete image dump of the crashed hard drive that we are trying to dig information in and we will do our best to try to recover more data, but it doesn't look very good. Because we deem the chance of recovering more data low, the site is in a live state and all changes you make will stick. If we find more data we will try to append it, but as we said, the chances seem very slim.
Again, our deepest apologies.
Update 9th of June
We have managed to restore most of the theatrical movie database and we can restore more of it, so it should be almost complete when we are done. We are doing backups and also working on the hard drive image to see what (if any) we can rescue. We think we can restore at least some of the collections (those members who were logged in 24h prior to crash). This has 100% priority of course.
Update 10th of June
The majority of the movies/theatrical database have been restored. The complete (or almost complete) DVD database should have been restored. We should also be able to restore at least a few thousand member collections and we are analyzing the crashed hard drive image and there seem to be at least partially intact information, so we are trying to see what we can restore.
Update 11th of June
The forum search function is back online now that we've had time to fully rebuild the post and thread search indexes. As for a recovery progress report, a lot of data seem to be intact on the old hard drive image, the problem is that the file system is corrupted and it seems impossible to repair, so extracting the old data is like one gigantic puzzle and a quick solution doesn't seem like an option for now. Besides regular backups we are also working on setting up several mirrors for redundacy so this will never happen again. Theatrical posters will be restored tomorrow and also about 2500 collections, we apologize again for not fixing that sooner.
Update 12th of June
We have restored one thousand theatrical posters, unfortunately the meta data with member credits couldn't be restored, but we have assumed that whoever created the theatrical entry also uploaded the poster (which is correct most of the time) and has such been assigned the credit for the poster as well. To make sure we don't make any mistakes, we want to do some more testing before inserting the 2500 collections, so that will unfortunately have to wait until tomorrow. We have also worked more on the backup routines and the hard drive image. Within 3-4 days we should know better if/how much we can restore from the image.
Update 2
We've had a possible breakthrough and it might actually be possible to recover a lot of the old data, including all collections, movie reviews, price trackings etc. No promises, but it looks quite good. We will not do a simple rollback to the state of the 8th, so you will not lose any information you've updated the last few days. We will get back with more updates.
Update 3
If you were a newly registered user the last 7-8 weeks and your account was lost, then please register again with the same email and there's a good chance we can restore your entire Blu-ray collection and price trackings.
Update 13th of June
We've been able to recover several databases, among them is the complete collections database. We are in the process of merging the current state of the collections with the old state, so you don't lose any recent updates and at the same time getting back your old collection including old meta data (comments, prices etc). We will first merge members who did not lose their accounts in the crash and then see what we can do about new members.
Update 2
The majority of the Blu-ray collections have been restored. We have not yet restored lost member's collections and not yet titles where the collection category was changed during the crash window. We are working on this. If you had a registered account prior to crash but it was lost after crash, then please register again with the same email address and there's a good chance we can recover your collection.
Update 14th of June
You can now see exactly which titles have been recovered by clicking on "Recovered" in red in your collection. For those of you who deleted your complete collection in anger because of the 7 week window loss, please let us know and we can restore that part as well
We are working on restoring some lost meta data and also if you changed any custom collection categories in the 7 week window. New members who have registered again with the same email should now have their complete Blu-ray collection back. We are also working on restoring DVDs, theatrical movies and games, but you will unfortunately have to wait a bit longer. We will restore part for part of the 7 weeks of missing data, so please continue using the site as normal and we will merge in missing data gradually.
Update 15th of June
We are almost done with the Blu-ray collection meta data and some collections with custom categories that are in limbo. The reason for delay is that the merge is somewhat complex and we don't want to mess things up (even more). The preliminary restore schedule/priority is: Blu-ray collections, DVD collections, theatrical collections, PS3/Xbox360 collections, price trackings, movie ratings, Blu-ray user reviews, PMs. After that we will continue with HT galleries/comments, favorites, some more theatrical/DVD fixes etc. We are trying to restore personal user data first and in the order we think members want them the most. If you for example have readded collections or price trackings after the crash, we will naturally not overwrite them, everything will be an unique merge with your personal data before and after crash. We have downgraded the priority of forum posts and forum threads, because they are somewhat more complex to merge well and those databases were also unfortunately a bit smashed up in the crash and are incomplete at the moment (we will try to fix them as well, but priority is downgraded). We will try to recover things first in a combination of what we think members want the most and what we think we can fix within an acceptable time frame. We will work on this more or less over the whole summer, but unfortunately we won't be able to do a perfect restoration, but we will do our utmost to make it an acceptable restoration.
Update 18th of June
All price trackings have been restored (including lost members')
All movie ratings have been restored (including lost members').
All price history information/graphs for Blu-ray movies, DVD movies and all other categories have been fully restored.
Lost members' collections have been restored (including BD, DVD, PS3, Xbox360 and custom categories).
We are working on meta data for collections-, custom categories- and DVD/PS3/Xbox360 collections for old members.
Update 19th of June
Blu-ray user reviews have been restored in full for all members.
BDs in custom categories, DVDs, PS3 and Xbox360 collections have now been restored for all members. Unfortunately some of the newly added DVDs, PS3s and Xbox360 games are still lost and such we haven't been able to re-add them to your collection.
Meta data for collection updates in the 7-week window should be fixed tomorrow.
Update 20th of June
In addition to all Blu-ray user reviews, all user reviews (theatrical, hardware, games etc) have now been restored. Unfortunately it looks like we need one more day for the collection meta data to be restored.
Update 22th of June
The collection merge/update function is ready, but we also want to make it 100% reversible just in case, so unfortunately it has been delayed further. At least it should be done sometime next week. We are also working on restoring more of the DVD database including credits and the HT galleries.
It reminds me of the time when I tried to preorder journey to the center of the earth from SAE.com. Only massively worse. I'm sorry that this happened. I'm sure it will be ok in the long run.
Well, now it looks like I have almost 100 blu-rays that I need to re-add to my collection... Oh well. I was wondering why I was having trouble accessing the site and now I know. Hopefully it won't be too long before everything is back up and running to pre-crash status.
Wow. I spent days importing my collection into the site. And I had pending transactions, in which I don't necessarily even remember the names of the people I was dealing with. This is f*cked up.
It's a tough loss for all of us, but we just have to manage it. The bright side is it's 7 weeks of loss and not much worse. I just updated my blu-ray list back to how it was. No biggie....
Most of my stuff recovered. Just a few things needed to be updated. 10-15 movies or so on order status and 6 on theatrical. Sorry to have lost some stuff in the forum, but you guys did amazing work in your recovery efforts and it is not unnoticed. Well done, and thanks for the hard work
I was wondering why I couldn't add any movies to the application today. Oh well, I'll just get back to adding my collection again (500 movies later...). At least the database was preserved, though!
Glad things are back up and running. Things like this aren't fun for anyone involved, but I come to this site almost daily since 2007 and this is the first time anything like this has ever happened.
Shit. Tough loss. It's going to be very hard for everyone to get evrything back up to date, but we have no choice....glad the forum isn't damaged further, but how likely is this to occur again?
This is unfortunate. Being the admin of a popular anime and manga website, I've experienced the same thing. So, I know the pain that's involved with trying to restore older data. It's not a painless effort. But, at least the site is still here (and so is mine).
That is a bummer, but remember the words from the Six Million Dollar Man. We can rebuild him, faster, and stronger. I know that everyone will pitch in to help. Also remember it can happen to the best of us, even with the most current hardware. There is no such thing as fool proof, unless you believe it. I will add my 2 cents worth every once and a while.
I at least have a partial backup thanks to how I configured my Android app. I set it NOT to auto-update, so I still have my database as it existed on my last update (5/27) on my phone. There's still some updates after that (the Disney preorders, release of The Sting, etc.), but between that and the restored database I'll manage. Like an old horror-movie ad I remember from the '70's said: "It's only a movie. Only a movie. Only a movie..."
Wow Now i hope the people i was doing trans actions with and actually paid stay true to there word and send me out my stuff..This really sucks. At the same time I wont give up on this site as it is one of my favorite sites and I pretty much live on here...
I rated, favorited, reviewed, imported and updated my a** off! Whats to say this want happen again. I love this site and cant imagine how alot of the people with bigger collection and transaction feel. I hope everybody can get back to where they were and how this use to be... or better!
I feel terrible for everyone who's put so much hard work into the site. Looking at the threads, we've jumped back in time to April, it's amazing to think of all the posts that have been erased from history all the contributions that guys have made, helpful posts that would have floated around in cyberspace for eternity....
In front of me is a stack of DVD's which I've entered and a few which were on their way. I'm sure everyone will rally round and build things back up to where they were and beyond. Time to get busy!
Ah man. I spent two nights earlier this week importing my entire DVD library since I had never taken the time to. Oh well, guess it'll give me an excuse to be lazy and drink some beers while staring at my PC for a bit.
It's ok....no worries here, so it's a little reset. I don't mind post counts or re-adding my database. Like someone else said, when the site was down.... I didn't realize how much I like coming here and need it.
This/that really sucks about the hard drive failure....
But there are worse things in life, like my Great grandmother questionable health and questionable mental health, of course she is over 95 years olde!
WOW some people here are really over reacting to this crash...it was not done on purpose so you have a bit of an inconvenience in having to re upload stuff. No big deal I am just glad that the site is back up and running I use this site daily and would miss it if it were to be shut down. All the complainers please do us all a favor and just get over it! I love this site and the people who post here so overall I say Welcome back Blu-ray.com lets get things up and running again
Why r people bitchin? The site is free and AMAZING!!!!!! Shit happens, just move on!!! Thank you guys at blu-ray.com for all you do!!! You guys r amazing!!!
lol It could be worse you could have a Tornado come through and wipe out your home and bluray collection and have to buy it all back. So re updating 2 months worth of movies is really not a big deal.
so this mean's we will not have no bluray reviews for a long time or does it mean that were just fucked for a little eather way i still love bluray.com u guys rock:)_
I was wondering why I couldn't get on the site earlier, could be worse though, its all info we can rebuild as much as it sucks, thank you blu-ray.com for the killer site.
I don't think blu-ray.com admins have anything to apologize for. This is a *free* service. This stuff happens (I work in IT). If there was a membership fee or cost to use the site, I would expect weekly full backups and nightly incrementals. But since it's free, I have no expectations of uptime or data reliability.
Thanks for keeping this a free system, blu-ray.com admins!
i had some pending trades/transactions as well and i'm going to have to find those people somehow and i lost some of my trader score too... thanks a bunch :/
Anyone else having issues logging into the Android App, I've already reinstalled it since it keeps saying login failed. How else do you actually re-register the app if all it asks is to provide your username and password.
It sucks, as I submitted quite a few DVD additions and all to get points, but an apology and explanation is all that I feel is needed, and you guys definitely exceeded your duty. We are a great community, and all these mistakes can be remedied over time. Thanks for the apologies, and we understand that technology is very convenient, but never perfect-- Mistakes happen; we're only human.
Good thing my blu-ray My Movies app is set to not auto update so I simply viewed my collection on my phone and browsed my collection on my cpu simultaneously to see what was missing. 32 missing blu's was not so bad lol
Thanks for the update folks.Sorry to hear about the misfortune.Love this site and the community. Please keep up the good work! You will always have my support!
While this event is unfortunate, it is my hope that all will be well soon and Blu-ray.com will continue to be the invaluable service it has been for me over the past 4 years. This is a great site and community.
Fortunately I keep a list of my DVD's and Blu-ray's, on paper! Unusual to lose that except by fire. I will have to go over the list to update all the recent entries.
Here's a list of things from the forum I recovered. The lists were sent to HDGoofnut, who will work on the databases Monday.
List of blu's with 7.1 audio as of 6/4
List of blu's with lossy audio as of 5/18
List of French Forced Subtitles as of 6/5
List of US Slipcovers as of 6/6
List of Canada slipcovers as of 5/24
List of UK Slipcovers as of 6/4
List of Steelbook cases as of 5/30
List of International blu's with better PQ/AQ as of 5/26
List of Region A locked blu's as of 5/16
The guys are providing an awesome free service at blu-ray.com,and to be fair they have not done this on purpose.
They could have made up any story to divert the blame from themselves, for instance they could have said they had been hacked or had a virus or something, but no they just bit the bullet and told us the truth.
We still love you guys. Dont worry about it. Shit happens. Looks like everybody is pretty supportive, accept for one(yes tron im talking about you). Besides, i should go through my collection again anyway as im sure there are some movies i missed while updating my collection.
I lost all of my PM's which contained deals in the works and ones where I was given codes that I needed. Will this be fixed? If not, I will be out some money.
Hi,guys, glad the site is up and running, and yes,I also am addicted to this site, the reviews, forums, calanders, and of course the members,,I went from 200+,to 179,no big deal,i'll just re-add and update my movies and eventually add photos of mu set up.
Just glad were all good,if yuo were contacting me before, just re-contact me,simple,as Arnie said, teh site--is back.
I completed my manual update from the Android app, Amazon order history, BB RZ records, sheer memory, and visual checks against my BDs. AFAIK current count is slightly different from previous, but I didn't restore a couple of Amazon preorders I cancelled and don't believe I had entered a purchase today from BB.com. Wish it hadn't happened, but no use crying over it. Keep up the good work!
Not a big deal at all! I just updated my collection and took me about 10 minutes. I love this site so much! I go on it a couple of times a day everyday!!
My heartfelt sympathies; I know how shitty something like this can be. Just finished re-updating my collection. All's good now. My day hadn't been complete until I made at least one stop on Blu-ray.com I love this site dearly and am very thankful to have it. I visit it multiple times a day. Keep up the good work and best of luck.
What bothers me is that it's typical... People trying to fix or change something that worked good so far!
Why did you have to "move to a new much more improved server" if you didn't experience issues witht the old one you usually used?
It seems that it wasn't that "much more improved", was it?
Don't get me wrong, I'm sorry for you, for the forum, for all the members (I also lost a lot of data) but I can't figure out why someone feels the need to fix something that was working good?!?
This is a bit discouraging, but its the first problem I've ever had with the site. Sadly I lost most of my collection, my price tracking, and my trading feedback.
I am going to wait a few days before updating what I lost, just in case it happens again...
At any rate, thanks to everyone who will be working hard over the next few days/weeks to get everything back up to speed.
Thankfully I only lost about 20 or so additions to my collection. During the re-adding process, I found some I forgot the first time around, so hey, not all bad!
I couldn't possibly be upset, this community has brought more to one of my favorite hobbies than I could have ever thought imaginable. I've saved (and spent) an unbelievable amount of money all thanks to tips and posts on the forums, and have enjoyed my last few years as a part of this community.
I didn't lose much of any importance, some gallery ratings and comments... was able to recover a copy of my latest Avatar I had spent a few hours photo-chopping to create, by doing a search on my HT thread title in Google and viewing the cached page...
I come here for the reviews and the forums community, neither of which will go away because of one small error. Sucks to see it happen, but keep up the excellent work.
my collection is the least of my problems, it's the pending transactions with other members that is of my primary concern. this is one big mess up for bluray.com...
Every time you buy something on Amazon while coming from this site, they get a small % of the sale. With the site averaging 500k hits a day, I'm sure there was enough money to buy some backup. People have the right to be angry. It won't stop me from coming here, it's a unique, addictive, cool site but it still sucks.
Thanks for getting the site up and running. I'm only set back a little. It's still a great site and I hope that in the future these things can be prevented.
this site has always functioned mainly as a outlet for my OCD of keeping lists of things and in turn has always just been for fun so if i have anything i need to update i say no big deal. if anything i just feel bad for the whole bluray.com team for having to deal with the other end of all of this. this is an awesome website, one of which i check multiple times a day, and this unforeseen / uncontrollable error defiantly will not change that. keep up all the good work!!
I'm very grateful for what a great resource this site is, in general, but disappointed in this development. Thanks for owning up to the mistake and hopefully steps are being taken to avoid it in the future.
Stuff happens. It wasn't intentional and this is a free site. Had to add about 10 or so blus back to my collection. Everything else seems OK except the Android app. Keeps telling me "login failed". Any reason? I'm using the same login and password that I'm using to login to the site.
well kiss my ass and call me Ernest! I just got my first 6 trades, (sales) got 6 positive trader scores and recommendations and now they are all gone; like my hopes, my dreams, my future....
Is anyone else having problems with the iPhone app? It keeps saying connection error and won't let me log on. On the site, I've noticed that what my collection says on the side doesn't match what I type in the search bar and it says I have. Can't really figure out how to get them the same again... :-\
In all seriousness, this is said, but life will go on. But as some others have said, this is why some people shouldn't put too much stock into the likes of Cloud storage and digital distribution (this goes for movies and video games). There's just too much potential for problems to happen.
Not that this is the most important thing, but are we going to have our member status' back? I wasn't the highest, but I was under "Uber" and had over 600+ Submissions. I know It's not the best rating, but It was cool to see my rating climb as I interacted with the site.
dont know if anyones mentioned it yet but if you have the Collection app on your phone, your entire collection prior to the crash should still be intact.
"We will try to make it up to you the very best we can."
You can send me my money back!... Oh wait, this is free... :P
Just kidding, but it's also a bit of a point that, although many of us are dedicated users, it's also free.
Sure, people contribute information, but don't feel too sorry, it's not like you're giving us a broken product that we paid a lot for or something. :P
This is unfortunate and disappointing, but I see how terribly annoying this must be with the transition in servers and all.
One thing I don't understand is, why there wasn't a backup made a little sooner. So that maybe now we'd have lost 1-2 weeks instead of 7, which is quite a lot.
In any way, good luck with any possible recovery and getting and keeping it up and running.
Don't let this take you down, cause it's still a great site, source and community!
Don't sweat it guys. You provide an awesome amount of information and tools on this site and this is an awesome community that will be even stronger after this little issue.
this site is nothing without it's members so even though this is free membership, this site has a responsibility to take care of it's members...members invested their time and effort here.
I can re-add and adjust my collection, no biggie. It'll take time, but it's doable. The things that really bugs me, though, is the fact that two months worth of private messages are now gone. I had quite a bit of transactions happening and now it's just gone. Luckily, I remember most of the people, but still, that really hurts. This site is free and you guys to a great job and give everyone a great site, but PLEASE back up for now and on. Almost two months gone without a back-up is pretty bad.
Good luck with the recovery, guys! I've always been appreciative of the tools that we've all been given with this FREE site, and though adding in the last 7 weeks of discs will take me literally MINUTES to redo, in the grand scheme of things it's not so bad.
With Prometheus out, this is probably the best time for this to happen. Everyone's mind is most likely elsewhere.
I tried posted this earlier but what a shame, I tried coming here all day but was finally happy to get back on, I reposted my important thread and reposted my dvd collection. Luckily it wasn't a big loss
this sucks, and my member status also went down from power member to active member, i had 2 codes people sent me though pm for mib 3 and madagascar now, this sucks....
So, gang, I hope we've all learned, business or personal, BACK UP YOUR DATA! I carry a 16 GB flash drive in my pocket every waking hour, with 15 years of critical files on it. (Including a text list of all my Blus and DVDs - on to rebuilding!)
And yeah, I come here multiple times every day ("No, Kris, they haven't added any new releases in the last 10 minutes...") and love the community that's helped me with my one intense hobby. As BLeClair12 said above, you've all saved me a huge amount of money and helped me with the tips, sales notices and collector comaraderie. *sniff* I luv you, man...
Lost some pending deals, some tracking numbers, about 50% of my trader ratings and my trade thread is a hot mess of updated stuff, but overall could have been worse... Fear of hard drive failure is why I have my home PC on automated back-up via Western Digital. It updates in the background 24/7 whenever I add or change a file. Didn't have that with old PC that did crash and it was a LOT of work to try and pull data form the dead HD. Can only imagine how bad it must be with the amount of data on this site.
Still love you, Blu-ray.com! You're still the best in my book! I love adding movies to my collection so this should give me something to do on a lazy afternoon!
I've been here for 4 years now and this is the first major crash that I can remember. I think that's pretty good so let's cut these guys some slack considering how much work they put into this for us. Yes it sucks, we'll survive.
I turned off wifi on my iPad, opened the movies app and used the most recent update I had done to rebuild my movies list on the site by doing a compare between the two and manually adding back the missing titles.
Had to re-add numerous movies to my collection, waiting for the Best Buy Exclusive Steelbooks to all be back in the database so I can add them. I'm no longer able to login on the Android App, any reason for this?
Fortunately, I track my discs on TWO databases, here and Delicious Library on the Mac. It won't be too difficult to rebuild my Blu-ray movie database. It looks like I need to add about 30 titles. Hard to believe I've purchased 30 titles in the last 7 weeks. That's more than four per week. Frankly, that seems wrong. But whatever it takes.
More disappointing to me is the loss of 7 weeks of comments in the forum. That is HUGE!
Frankly, I am STUNNED that ANY professional site in this day and age isn't doing daily backups. But you guys have probably been eating Tums by the handful all day so I can't be too hard on you about that.
Damn. Over 150 blurays and almost 1000 dvds. I'm not sure I want to put in the time and re-enter all of them. I've literally spent a few days in the last 2 weeks trying to get my collection perfect. Not blaming anyone but this seriously sucks. I'd almost rather it all be gone then try to figure out what I'm missing. Sorry guys.
Edit: Thank goodness for the app!! Yep. 110 blurays need to be re-entered. 1373 dvd's though! Ugh. Thank you for making the app! Is there away to import or sync from the app to the site? Like when you scan a movie in it adds it. I open the app with flight mode on so it doesn't update. Would it add those back? Anyone try?
Worse things have happened. No reasonable person who uses this site would do much more then shrug their shoulders and wish the site operators the best of luck in getting things back to normal.
Love the site. This is bad news, but were I to read "catastrophic failure and the site is now finished" then I'd be upset. This too shall pass. Gonna have to try to remember all of those additions and subtractions. Hmmmm.
I had about 35 movies added since then and now we'll have to re-add them again. But the enjoyment Ill get is being able to appreciate my collection. Or wonder how much money has been spent. Its a double edge sword. lol
Not a problem guys. Luckily for me, things have been slow on the collection front the last couple months, so I only had a couple of titles to re-add. I'm glad things are back up and running, thanks for the heads up!
Well, it took me a while, but I believe I have everything back on track that I had on my wishlists. Fortunately all of my DVDs and BDs that I own were still here. It could have been a hell of a lot worse, but thankfully, everything is back to normal.
Thanks again to the hard-working folks at Blu-Ray.com for the heads-up information. You guys are still the best, no matter what. I hope you are able to retrieve what you can.
Lots of respect for all of you right now, and I'm glad to see things are back up and running for you again. This is all recoverable. Best of luck to you guys as you get back to normal. If anything, the outage today reminded me of how valuable your website truly is - you're all godsends!
This is definitely my most visited site ever. Love this site and didn't know what to do when it was down. Glad it's back on. Really appreciate this site. Too bad some of the data has been lost since I put the blu-ray and theatrical list to coincide with the date of purchase too. I can put the movies back in ok, but finding the date of purchase and the price again is little too difficult. Well, can't complain much, it's still a great site. thank you.
Got a question. On my iphone, the app still reports 121 blu-rays. Is there a way to export that data to my account from the iphone so my collection reflects the correct information?
Oh no! =/ I think I remembered my movies I added. But, yes glad we are all back. I come to this site every day and look for deals, news, etc. Thanks for having a great place to come to. =)
Guys, stuff happens. We all have to learn from our mistakes. While I am disappointed, I am not angry or upset. The crew on this website have bent over backwards to give us the best blu-ray database and I am truly glad. I stand behind you, blu-ray.com. Thank you for all you have done for us over the years! I hope you are able to recover all of the loses.
Well that explains why I had 10 movies missing. I was like, "I haven't sold anything yet, have I?" cause I plan on selling some of the movies I don't watch. And then I thought maybe me reaching 300 blu-rays was a dream. Anyway, no biggie. I'm just happy this site is still here and that it wasn't my internet cutting out trying to get here. I never realized how dependent I am on this site.
Luckily, I can just go through my orders on Amazon to add what Blu-rays I bought to the collection. It just sucks that I can't remember what movies I added to the theatrical as I added some recently I remember seeing as a child that I don't have the ticket stubs for. Haha, how ironic!
I have the data in the Blu-ray Weekly Sales results thread backed up and I will be able to replace all the weekly data tonight. Too bad the comments are toast there but its not the end of the world.
It's cool staff, as we depend more on the computer these things are bound to happen. At least you didn't launch a nuclear missile. Thanks for all that you do to make this one of the best sites on the internet.
I was just wondering "where the hell are my last 25 BRs ??" ;-))
Dont beat yourselves up guyzz, u do a wonderful job, i love ur site, and like the other dude said : "s**t happens" !
Seriously, thanks again for your amazing job, your site rocks, keep up the good work, i'll just buy more BRs through BR.com so u can improve the hardware ;-)))
I wondered what was going on today and yesterday when I couldn't access this site.
You guys are very apologetic but like most people I think that there's worse things in the world to worry about. I'm so OCD about my collection I delete it and update it regularly, so for me, you've actually saved me some effort ^_^
Thanks for getting my favourite website up guys, I wouldn't have the collection I've got without your knowledge of worldwide releases, deals etc.
Technology sucks, but data loss happens all the time. I'm sure you guys have a solution to prevent this in the future - just never leave us again!!! lol Thanks for explaining the issue, much appreciated
Don't sweat It guy's. It's not the end of the world, It's just a website - a superb website, but a website nonetheless. We can re-contribute Your hard work Is very much appreciated.
It is indeed sad mainly for you guys as I know how much work would have been involved and the subsequent embarassment and loss of face. I work in IT and know from experience how crucial it is for a critical backup policy. Personally I have only lost about 60 entries in my collection so will just go through my shelves and re add to the collection.
The fact is as other people have said, these things happen, you arent a financial institution, you are essentially a hobby site.
Blu-ray.com is free and is a wonderful site. Thanks for keeping it that way.
All the best
Well that sucks, but at least the most important stuff(blu-ray reviews and movie database) is still there. Hope you'll upgrade to Intel based controller SSDs and hardware RAID1.
For Backup, use Acronis Backup & Recovery 10(version 11 sucks big time) Server for Windows (or Server for Linux, depending on your environnement). Backup to a regular internal HDD in AHCI non-RAID setup.
Configure Acronis to send the log by email upon backup job failiure.
If you have access to the server room where you're hosted, you could swap the backup disk every week manually to be safe in case of a fire or the server being stolen. This way you'll have an off-site backup. But usually theses kind of problem do not happen in such hosting compagnies.
You should be pretty good to go with this setup.
In any case, I've got a shitload of stuff to redo on Blu-Ray.com!:D May the force be with me!;)
My advice by the way...is to get all your servers hosted and get your hosting supplier to enforce the backup policy.
That way its manageable and scalable. You can concentrate on the content of the site and leave the IT to the suppliers!
