Sony Shrinks Blu-ray Lasers

Posted January 25, 2008 07:57 AM by Josh Dreuth

TDK Sony has announced that they have successfully developed a read/write Blu-ray laser which is only 3mm thick. The result of joint development with Nichia, the laser can read and write dual-layer media, including those which use organic dyes. Sony expects that the reduced size and complexity of the laser assembly will result in reduced production costs. The first planned application for the laser will be a 9.5mm laptop drive sometime this year.

The support for organic dyes in media will hopefully result in an increased demand for the product. Organic dye Blu-ray media can be manufactured on existing DVD lines, resulting in less expensive media at the consumer level. This combined with the reduced cost of the laser (and reduced costs of devices which use the laser) should put Blu-ray in a good position to challenge DVD in the PC market.

Anytime there is any type of cost reduction without hurting the product I say it's huge plus

Good news! Less money = more adopters:)

Not that I'm an expert, but the size decrease sounds astonishing -- 3mm is REALLY thin.

And the ability for existing DVD lines to produce Blu-rays sounds like the most important hardware news of the past six months.

Because, and correct me if I'm wrong -- this directly negates one of the competition's main talking points, right?

RIGHT?

Now we just have to wait for at PS3 Slim Edition ;-)

does that means the current BD laser can't write dual-layer? I know I have one, but never attempted myself to write to dual-layer drive

Do you think (if they put it on a new model PS3) that it will also be a writer?

This could be a great feature for the PS3 -- the ability to burn BDs.

I agree with Seretur, the 3mm laser upgrade is by far the best hardware news in a while!

Way to rip HD-DVD's legs out from under them for good!

I'm glad that Sony is really improving the technology as much as possible. This will help adoption by reducing costs. I do wonder what the slim PS3 will look like. Even though it seems a little early for the slim ps3 when the white PS3 is just now getting over here "sorta". Was just cleared with the FCC to be exact

The less cost the better it is for everybody else.

This is excellent news. We need to get the production prices lower, and the physical sizes smaller if
we want to see BD burners in our computers this year.

The less $$$ the better. I would like 'slim' Ps3's;)

I'm glad to see things are progressing with Blu-Ray technology. Seems to me HD-DVD manufacturers would need to concentrate on marketing and promotion of the technology with the latest rash of claims that Blu-Ray will "win the format war". This news confirms that their Blu-Ray counterparts are forging ahead further developing this better technology to be less expensive in addition to being a better format.

How is HD-DVD better? You won't be able to say that HD-DVD technology is cheaper to manufacture sooner than expected. Another reason why it's not.

This sounds great! If they can also shrink the laser beam itself you could pack more information onto a Blu-ray disk!

lets just hope this organic dye that can be used on existing dvd lines doesnt reduce any quality of the blu ray discs
