Variance Films has just revealed the first theatrical trailer for Red Hook Summer. The newest film from director Spike Lee (Malcolm X), Red Hook Summer acts as a spiritual sequel to Lee's acclaimed drama Do the Right Thing; it takes place in and around the same Brooklyn locations as that 1989 feature.
Lee tells his story of young Flik Royale (newcomer Jules Brown), an Atlanta teenager whose mother sends him to live with his grandfather, Da Good Bishop Enoch Rouse (Clarke Peters, Treme), for the summer. Initially, Flik pushes back against his grandfather's rules and lifestyle, with a particular enmity towards Enoch's fierce religious devotion. As the summer progresses, however, Flik immerses himself in the culture of the neighborhood and ultimately undergoes a startling journey of self-discovery.
In addition to Brown and Peters, Red Hook Summer's ensemble cast includes Thomas Jefferson Byrd (Ray), James Ransone (Inside Man), Nate Parker (Red Tails), and Lee himself, who reprises his role as Mookie from Do the Right Thing.
Red Hook Summer opens in limited release on August 10th.
