Featuring an all-star cast including Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward, Orson Welles and Lee Remick, this smoldering story from the Deep South is filled with sexual tension, bawdy humor and powerfully clashing personalities. When suspected barnburner Ben Quick (Newman) drifts into a town dominated by Will Varner (Welles), he is recruited to husband Varner's spinster daughter (Woodward) so that Varner can keep an eye on him. But the two men soon lock horns, and ultimately a chain of events leaves them all changed forever.
Directed by Martin Ritt, The Long, Hot Summer is based on three William Faulkner stories, and marks the first on-screen teaming of Newman and Woodward.
I just randomly caught this film on TCM once and thoroghly enjoyed it! I've seen it again since and I'm convinced it would make a great addition to my collection. I agree, we need a U.S. release.
This is a fabulous movie. If hope the German release is region free; or at least we'll see a US release. It seems like the German distributors care more about our classic movies than their American counterparts.
Even better, the German BDs seem always to have a No Subtitles option, unlike the French ones. Since "Long, Hot Summer" recently had a French release, probably with forced subs, this is good news, indeed. The recent German "Man Shot Shot Liberty Valance" BD looks fabulous over at DVDBeaver. This LHS should also be a huge improvement over the DVD.
Bought the Italian BD of this from Amazon IT. Same transfer. One of my all time favorte Newman movies, grand pulp and scenery chewing but a delight all the way. Transfer looks excellent, sound very good.
