A new restoration of acclaimed director Milos Forman's Hori, ma panenko a.k.a Firemen's Ball has been screened at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. The film was restored with participation of KVIFF, the National Film Archive of Prague and Czech Movies Foundation.
The restoration of Firemen's Ball is part of a long-term project to digitally restore major works of Czechoslovak cinematography. The first film from the project, whose digitally restored copy was screened in its gala premiere at last year's Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, was Frantisek Vlacil's Marketa Lazarova.
The Firemen's Ball is a milestone of the Czech New Wave and director Forman's first color film. It was nominated for Oscar Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1969.
Note: In the U.S., The Firemen's Ball is currently available only on DVD, courtesy of the Criterion Collection (see our listing here).
