Warner Brings Dark Shadows Titles to Blu-ray

Posted July 9, 2012 03:44 PM by Josh Katz

Warner Bros.In the fall, Warner Home Entertainment will bring both House of Dark Shadows and Night of Dark Shadows to Blu-ray. These cinematic spin-offs of the popular television soap opera further examine the supernatural happenings at the gothic Collinwood Mansion.

From Warner's official synopses:

House of Dark Shadows (1970) -

"Rejoice, night creatures! Collinwood's affected Barnabas Collins (Jonathan Frid, Dark Shadows) hopes a series of serum injections will make him normal. Alas, nothing can be normal at eerie Collinwood!"

Night of Dark Shadows (1971) -

"One bite is never enough! New blood comes home in Night of Dark Shadows, as Quentin Collins (David Selby, The Social Network) arrives with his bride (Kate Jackson, Scarecrow and Mrs. King)."

While Warner has yet to outline the technical details for the Dark Shadows Blu-rays, the distributor has provided the respective discs' supplementary specifications; a theatrical trailer will be included alongside each film.

Both House of Dark Shadows and Night of Dark Shadows street on October 30th.

I'm going to guess this means we can expect Tim Burton's film to street on or around October 30th as well?

Interesting but why not release the restored versions with the newly recorded dialogue?

That's terrific news! Rented House of Dark Shadows on PSN a couple months ago. Night of Dark Shadows looks even better judging by the trailer; wish they'd get it on PSN so I could rent before buying!!

I am both extremely happy about the double feature, and sad that Warner decided to release the cut version (30 minutes) of the 2nd film Night of Dark Shadows. The footage was found and restored. When this was released in theaters, MGM made Dan Curtis trim off 30-some minutes, basically ruining the plot and the character development. The footage was found (as noted in the new edition of the Dark Shadows Companion book). So why isn't this going to be the release the director filmed rather than a version cut just to accommodate more showings per day at the theater?

I am very disappointed at Warner for this. Certainly there are enough Dark Shadows fans to accommodate a restoration and insert the cut footage. There's going to be plenty of Dark Shadows fans very disappointed. But hey, at least they are releasing this on Blu-ray, which I didn't expect. Perhaps the news is wrong but the story is here: http://darkshadowsnews.blogspot.com/?utm_source=sendgrid.com&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=website

As for the new film, I saw it in the theater and it's just (in my humble opinion) a total mockery and not even funny (which it shouldn't have been, Dark Shadows was never a comedy). The first 10 minutes of Burton's film is just fantastic, but as soon as Depp appears, wow, tasteless. House of Dark Shadows is going to be awesome in HD for the first time in its original aspect ratio too:-) woo hoo.

Can't wait for "House of Dark Shadows." Day 1 purchase of a life-long favorite. Without the restored version, I'll probably pass on "Night of Dark Shadows" as the theatrical cut is just an absolute mess. Such a pity that Burton and Depp chose to make a farce rather than true "Dark Shadows." Never have such (potentially) creative talents expressed so much love for a subject only to demonstrate at every turn their total lack of understanding of the subject.

Warner Bros. you kept us waiting and waiting for years to finally put these on DVD/Blu ray and you are not going to include the directors cut of Night of Dark Shadows which people have worked years on to restore? you totally suck donkey dick. first you exclude extended versions of all 8 HP movies from this new box set just to screw more people out of money then when you finally decide to release these movies on the coat tails of the new movie you decide to screw people over more by excluding the directors cut which ive been waiting years for. one of the biggest epic fails ever. booo!

Considering how fast the (pricey) Limited Edition DVD Collectors set of the entire series sold-out on Amazon, shows that Dark Shadows still has some staying power. Knowing this I don't understand why Warner wouldn't be interested in the restoration, especially since so many have been working on it.

Perhaps it's a rights issue with the Dan Curtis estate. Maybe only Warner has the home video rights to the original theatrical version.

This has nothing to do with a rights issue, and everything to do with Warner not interested in putting money towards a HD restoration. They are a disgrace.

Amazing! I am truly glad that they are finally coming out! BUT, It is beyond my understanding how Warner could screw this up - especially after KLS and Jim Pierson recently eluded to a restored version of NODS!!!
It makes me think that Warner is on the wrong side of history just like the ORIGINAL M-G-M JACK-ASS who told Dan Curtis he had to edit down NODS in the first place. The original working title for NODS was Curse of Dark Shadows - I think the Curse of Dark Shadows is that there are assholes screwing with the films because they don't care or don't get it! I sure wish MPI had the rights to these then we would have a first class release! Maybe Warner will double dip and release SE's of these. IMHO.
