Starting today - July 10th - Barnes & Noble is having its first Criterion Collection sale of the year. The retail chain will offer 50% off the MSRPs of all online and most in-store Criterion Blu-ray titles.
In addition, it is expected that Barnes & Noble will make several member and non-member coupons available throughout the duration of the Criterion sale.
Generally, Barnes & Noble limits the eligible Criterions in this sale to those discs currently in-stock - meaning that Criterion pre-orders often do not qualify. However, certain exceptions sometimes crop up, and this post will be updated to reflect any special promotional items.
For a brief few hours, B&N's buy-2-get-1-free deal also applied to this, and man, what a deal. Also, pre-orders for "Metropolitan", "The Last Days of Disco", and "Down by Law" are eligible for the 50% off.
Ya, I was lucky to order while the Buy 2, get 1 free still applied. 12 Blu-rays & 3 box sets (David Lean, 3 Colors, Samurai Tril) all for $300 shipped.
Guess its time to spend the morning letting Amazon know about the lower prices. Was hoping they'd take the initiative and lower them automatically without the prods.
Snagged the Samurai Trilogy, Kiss Me Deadly and A Night To Remember!
If I hadnt been wasting my time seeing To Rome With Love (okay, a lot of it was actually pretty enjoyable) then I could've taken advantage of the temporary buy 2 get one free offer and gotten another 3!
Oh well, Im pretty damned satisfied with what I got.
Picked up:
Harold and Maude
A Night to Remember
Shallow Grave
The Darjeeling Limited
Sommarlek
Gojira
La haine
Bottle Rocket
Cronos
Identificazione Di Una Donna
I searched on "buy two get third free" and a lot of titles came up, but it does not seem to work at checkout. Will this deal come back or should I bag it and wait another year?
I want 12 Angry Men and Anatomy of a Murder, but they really aren't 50% off deals by prices on Amazon, which were the fair retail prices. Barnes & Noble almost always overcharges...$39.99 original prices? Jeez.
@28BlusLater: It's half off MSRP, which at about $20 is less than the "fair retail price" you're willing to pay on Amazon. And even Amazon compares its price to MSRP: "Price: $28.95, You save: $11.00 (28%)".
If B&N gave these away people on this site would still find something to bitch about.
My July blu-ray budget is devoted entirely to this sale. So far I've picked up 8 titles, and plan to get several more by month's end. With an additional 10% off in-store as a B&N member, I spend less than $20 on a regular title after tax (a hefty 8.7% in NY).
I'm going to wait to what coupons will be available. The only Criterion I really want right now is America Lost and Found and I want the price to drop down to $50 before I buy it. Too bad that "Buy 2 get third free" sale has ended already. I would have definitely gotten it then...
I wish Criterion would have a channel on Tv that just showed nothing but there movies. Although the packaging is amazing, I would watch the channel all the time. I do have hulu plus but still that would be nice.
There's a 15% off coupon code (On highest priced item) Y4A7P7U,I believe it expires on July 11,2012.
I used it today (10th) and it worked, apparently you must use Visa Card.
My Purchases:
Gold Rush
12 Angry Men
A Night To Remember
David Lean Directs Noel Coward
Harold and Maude
Design For Living
Anatomy Of A Murder
Just picked up Being John Malkovich at my local store today for $20. I wanna buy more but I know ill prob need that money sooner than later. But i am eye-ing Seven samurai, Bottle Rocket, Rushmore. If I dont get anything else im happy with what I got. August and Sept are gonna be killer on my wallet anyway Quadrophenia, Gosse Point Blank, Royal Taununbaums, Indiana Jones box, Lone Wolf & Cub Set
So much to choose from...
I ordered the David Lean directs Noel Coward box, the Samurai Trilogy and Harold & Maude. I might order Seven Samurai and maybe Charade towards the end of the sale. With all the other films I want badly, like Down by Law, I tell myself that the savings compared to amazon aren't huge (in many cases only 4 or 5$), so I don't need to buy them right now. (Just to be crystal clear, I'm not complaining about the sale in any way, but I have to find reasons not to spend too much money here :-) )
I had over 10 titles total including all the Chaplin and all the Kurosawa ones but in the end I decided to go with the "Kurosawa 25 Movie Collection" on regular DVD for $169.99 with @johnny 15% off coupon code (Y4A7P7U). That's $6.80 per movie, not a bad deal!
Y4A7P7U isn't working for me -- expired or is it because i put another dead code in before hand and confused it? OR is it because all the items are the same price...
Early Christmas shopping in July-- for me!!! Ordered Being John Malkovich, The Gold Rush, Harold and Maude, The Moment of Truth, The Samurai Trilogy and Three Outlaw Samurai!!!
Thanks for the heads up, picked up Samurai Trilogy, Being John Malkovich and Down By Law. Looking forward to the next B&N Criterion sale come Thanksgiving...
Hmm, strange that the coupons are so sparse this year. Ill just keep waiting. If nothing comes up, ill just pick-up my must-haves and be done (gold rush, 39 steps and being john malkovich).
Going to pick up House (Hausu), Videodrome, Being John Malkovich, World On A Wire, By Brakhage, Amarcord, and the Ingmar Bergman Trilogy (Through A Glass Darkly, The Silence, and Winter Light).
Any other suggestions? I know all Criterion films are regarded as "interesting," but if you could make any further suggestions, I'd greatly appreciate it.
This appears in every criterion item in the B&N site:
This item does not qualify for coupons or promotional discounts unless expressly stated.
And B&N sent me a coupon today but I can't use it because none of my items (all criterions) are eligible. It's weird because in previous occasions I have used this coupons with no trouble. Any suggestions?
Like zoodermin I also got a coupon sent to me yesterday (after I had placed my order of course...) but since it was one of those either 10%, 15%, 20%, 30% or 50% coupons I put the most expensive item (Samurai Trilogy) in my cart and entered the code so I could see what percentage I would get (it was 20% so it wasn't worth cancelling my order to re-add all items and the coupon).
The funny thing was that it did work!
After reading zoodermins post now I tried again and got a message that the coupon wasn't eligible...
So I hope nobody got a 30% or 50% coupon that they wanted to use on the Criterion sale but waited a little before using it!
