Studio Canal will bring to Blu-ray two classic French films: Jacques Becker's Casque d'or (1952), starring Simone Signoret, Serge Reggiani and Claude Dauphin, and Claude Sautet's César et Rosalie (1972), starring Yves Montand, Romy Schneider and Sami Frey. Street date for both is November 5th.
Casque d'Or
Classic French underworld drama set in Paris at the turn of the century. When Georges Manda (Serge Reggiani) falls for Marie (Simone Signoret), he faces the wrath of her boyfriend, the petty crook Roland (William Sabatier). Gang boss Felix (Claude Dauphin) who secretly lusts after Marie, orders the two to fight it out for her hand, hoping to eliminate his love rival. When his boyhood friend is subsequently framed for the murder, Georges, not realising Felix's involvement, does the decent thing and turns himself in to the police. The tragedy is complete when Georges discovers Felix's role in his downfall, escapes from custody, and kills Felix.
Cesar & Rosalie
Claude Sauter's (Nelly and Monsieur Arnaud, Un Coeur en Hiver) romantic comedy follows Rosalie (Romy Schneider), a divorcee who is happily involved with Cesar (Yves Montand), an older man. Their relationship takes a sudden turn when David (Sami Frey), Rosalies old flame shows up determined to win her back. After years of changing dynamics between the three, Rosalie is finally forced to question her feelings towards both men and make her ultimate decision.
Note: In the U.S., Casque d'Or is currently available only DVD, courtesy of the Criterion Collection. Cesar & Rosalie is currently out of print.
