Warner Bros. has just revealed the first teaser trailer for Man of Steel. Director Zack Snyder (300) brings his unique cinematic vision to this action blockbuster, which re-imagines the origins of iconic superhero Superman (Henry Cavill, Immortals).
The film begins with Superman's birth on doomed planet Krypton and then follows him through his adolescence in small-town Smallville, where he learns the values that define his character and forge his heroism, heroism that receives a brutal testing when he is forced to confront Zod (Michael Shannon, Boardwalk Empire), a despotic Kryptonian general driven mad through years of interplanetary exile.
Man of Steel's scheduled U.S. release date is June 14th, 2013.
Note: Warner has made two trailers available. Both contain the same visual content; the differences occur in the voiceover track. This first teaser includes narration from Kevin Costner's Jonathan Kent.
This second trailer, however, replaces Costner's voiceover with a different speech from Russell Crowe's Jor-El.
This movie may be something with substance and character (literally and figuratively). The trailer certainly looks interesting. I may be in the minority, but I had high expectations for Superman Returns and felt somewhat let down. Really hope this delivers. Fingers crossed.
This looks like a new direction with the Superman movies. With a solid soundtrack and Nolan Producing they could turn out quite a good reboot. I'm now very interested.
michinman, yes, I too was very disapointed with Superman Returns.
I honestly don't understand what people find so fascinating about these endless super hero movies. I get why kids like them, but adults? EVERY single movie is about the same damn thing. A guy, or guys, puts on a costume and fights evil. It's the most childish and silly premise that anyone could come up with. But I genuinely want to know, what is it that you all love so much about these movies? Honestly, someone tell me.
What is it that people love about sports? A bunch of guys wearing uniforms and costumes who are trying to score more points then the other team. What do people love about crime dramas, romantic comedies, thriller, etc. For some the superhero genre is about hope. Many are about the little guy overcoming perceived limitations. And for some it's just plain fun. Just because YOU don't understand it, you shouldn't diminish it. I however will continue to enjoy the genre and you can enjoy your superiority sir.
@michinman....seriously! It will be good! It's Zack Snyder....the guy has created 2 of the best comic book movies ever! And even Sucker Punch (which I havent seen yet) has been a cult and fan-favourite despite its bad reviews...the guy knows his stuff....not to mention the script is half-Nolan's!
Anyway Superman Returns' mistake was that they tried sooo hard (even inserting Brando digitally) to make it look like the old ones and have it continue from there , instead of Singer making it his own...he even cast Brandon I-look-too-much-like-Reeve Routh, for Pete's sake!
Anyway, I loved the teaser....I loved both voiceovers but I have to agree that Costner's Jonathan gave me a Smallville's-Pa-Kent kind of goosebumps....I teared....<3
@scarface16 "but adults?" Dude in that phrase lies your answer....because all adults (including me) who watch these movies, were once upon a time kids who grew up with the comics....who found fun, solace and lessons in them...yup...comics are THAT important to some (heck! most) people!
@eiknarf I think the "exhaust" that's seen is supposed to be the friction the hero is encountering with earth's atmosphere. The same sort of thing that happens when debris falls toward earth and heats up or burns before reaching us. I may be wrong. Boy, I really sound like a geek now. haha.
this looks so dang good i love the trailer with crows voice he voice is so god like and it just has a wonderful smooth sound to it at time.s if u watch this trailer no joke u feel like superman by the way scareface16 u are a dumass !!!
@darkknightman: Exactly! I can't stand sports or romantic comedies (Woody Allen aside)! I guess all of these things just appeal to certain mindsets. And that's another thing, what is it about sports that people love so much? I mean, I get the fun in playing them, but watching them? That just feels like watching someone else play a video game. What's the fun in that? Also, how is that people have "favorite teams." This concept makes no sense to me. It's one thing to have a favorite filmmaker, actor, singer, writer etc, because you either enjoy their aesthetic or you don't. But sports teams? There's no consistency. One year, a team is great, the next they suck. How is it possible to have a favorite? I suppose that most peoples favorite team is their "hometown team." But that seems awfully tribalistic to me. I'm not trying to be a snob, I'm genuinely curious about these things.
@Torgon: Funny you should mention that. Up until about 3 weeks ago, I'd always thought that I was never fan of super hero movies, but that Nolan's two Batman films were the exception. Leading up to the release of The Dark Knight Rises, I decided to go back and watch one each week before seeing the last one. But what I discovered (I had only seen Batman Begins once before) was that I didn't really care about the character of Bruce Wayne or the general premise of those films at all. I noticed some jarring flaws in Begins (mostly the performances, not the main cast, but the supporting actors) and realized that it followed the basic formula of the super hero film to a tee. Actually, the best part of the film, for me, was the first hour, before he becomes Batman. The Dark Knight was a different, and more enjoyable experience, however. What I loved about that film was Heath Ledger (of course), Nolan's brilliant shot compositions and the overall cynicism of the piece. I love that in the end, the Joker doesn't really lose. Yes, the citizens don't blow each other up, but he was still able to bring "Gotham's white Knight" down to his level. So in that sense, he did win. That's almost unheard of for a super hero movie and that's what I loved so much about it. The ending to The Dark Knight Rises, on the other hand, reminded me of everything I hated about the genre.
@arisgow: I grew up with cartoons. I don't watch those anymore.... And I think it would be foolish to assume that everyone had the same experience as you growing up.
Is this a prequel perhaps to the rumored Justice League I've been hearing about? Yes, Superman Returns was somewhat a disappointment since I felt like I was watching a repeat of Superman: The Movie. I do wish that anytime a Superman movie is made, they wouldn't feel like they have start over from the beginning; any of us who knows the Superman legacy knows the story. They could certainly use that time wisely for more character depth. I wonder if we'll see a theatrical feature on Wonder Woman. Here's to a great new (again) start on this great character. I cannot wait for the movie.
Uh, what? I'm sorry. There's nothing remotely brilliant about the way Christopher Nolan stages, frames or edits. His visual report is some of the blandest and clumsiest that I've seen from any A-budget blockbuster film.
As for Man of Steel, it looks like Snyder is adopting a modern (and similar to the above) aesthetic. Still too early to tell, though.
Costner replacing Glenn Ford and Russell Crowe replacing Brando? I'm okay with that, but I'd be giggling if I was on weed.
I like that Nolan and Goyer are involved but it's infuriating that Hack Snyder is directing. He is a horrible director who makes horrible, horrible movies, a la Michael Bay.
Glad to see it has a real world look. Most of Snyder's movies look like video games to me. This trailer makes me want to see this movie. I just hope they did a good job not making Superman cheesy. To sell the idea that no one can tell Superman isn't Clark Kent in the age of cell phones and the internet is a task. I always felt Superman was more believable in a more innocent time like the 30's, 40's, or 50's.
Superman.. the only superhero I really don't like. But thats my opinion. I'll still check the movie out though, maybe it'll change my mind on the subject!
Just knowing that Snyder/Nolan have decided to make the "our saviour was a simple fisherman" parallel is enough to put me off thinking of what other metaphors they will be using to beat us over the head with in this film.
Subtlety is the name of the game for this character.
It's a good teaser, but we won't get a good feel for the film itself until we see a full trailer with action scenes and character interaction scenes. If I had to guess, I'd say WB will have such a trailer attached to The Hobbit in December.
I read that John Williams' score will not be used for this movie : (
Kind of a let down but will hope for the new one (score) to be good.
I'm am excited to see what Zach and Nolan will do with this.
What I get from this trailer: Superman likes fishing and he hitchhikes. Also, he has two cool fathers. Not much of a trailer, but then again, it is a teaser. Nevertheless, I AM PSYCHED!!! This is gonna drip epicness.
@eiknarf Those white streaks are called contrails (condensation trails) or vapor trails and are long thin artificial clouds that sometimes form behind aircraft. They can be triggered by the changes in air pressure in wingtip vortices or in the air over the entire wing surface. Like all clouds, contrails are made of water, in the form of a suspension of billions of liquid droplets or ice crystals. This is not exhaust, just disrupted air. The next time you see them in the sky, remember that this is not pollution, just water vapor, and certainly anything travelling at a ballistic speed, like Superman is in the trailer, could create this effect.
That already looks intriguing. The Russell Crowe trailer resonated a bit more with me, mainly because of the quality of his voice, but I enjoyed both.
The project has a lot of promise, given the iconic central character (historically one of my favorite movie superheroes) and the talented crew and cast involved, especially Zack Snyder, whose Watchmen and 300 I liked. Perhaps Warner Bros., this time around, will manage to reestablish the Superman feature film series as a successful franchise, as it has been trying to do repeatedly, on and off, since the 1980s.
I liked Superman Returns but thought it was a little redundant of the Reeves movies. I agree, the Superman needs SOME revisioning for the movie, but, I do not like the looks of this film or do I like our first glimpses of the new Superman. Personally, I thought Routh would of been great with a different directors vision. I have always wanted to see some movie producer produce three Superman movies with three different actors playing Superman and three different directors, within a span of about 5 years. The character is so old, has gone through so many different styles and periods, its hard to settle on just one way to do it.
Man Of Steel teaser trailer is great. Now I want to see this film next year Summer 2013. Can't wait to see this film. It better be good though. I guess when it comes down to it I'm more of a fan of the Christoper Reeve Superman films at least the 1st 2 that Richard Donner directed. and I always will be fan of those superman films because those are the gold standard of superman films. But I do agree you have to try something new and hopefully this new film will be good.
I don't get what the fuss is about. I LOVE Superman. Donner's first Superman film is in my opinion the Godfather of all superhero movies and will never be topped. But do we need another reinventing of the origin story as this appears to be? I don't trust Goyer for one bit as a writer; he's hit or miss (mostly miss in my opinion). And I don't trust Snyder as a director; apart from 300, I've hated everything he's done. He's gotta be one of the most overrated directors of the last decade. I'll make up my mind when I see a full trailer but so far, I'm not excited in the slightest about this.
Watchmen was amazing and it's only gonna get better with time, kinda like how everyone had to warm up to Blade Runner. I think Sucker Punch is much the same, an instant cult classic. Although the feat of tackling Watchmen was enormous, I feel like Snyder really pulled it off and he's shown to be more than capable of handling this material. Especially with Nolan's careful hand to guide. Just saw Dark Knight Rises and was blown away. Fantastic end to the trilogy and Man of Steel looks to be shaped similarly.
@scarface16, why even post if you are gonna hate on anyone that likes Superhero movies. I'm willing to bet some of the movies in your blu-ray collection have a good versus evil theme to them.
For the record this will be the best Superman movie ever, with no cheese...!!!
Loved The Dark Knight Rises Friday morning, and I'll see it again at the theatre later this week, despite what that crazy clown that did that nonsense in Colorado Friday be #$#@$!!
This teaser has me excited. Saw it at The Dark Knight Rises show, which I just got back from. Zach Snyder had won me over with Watchmen, so I look forward to his take on Superman. Don't know how deeply involved Nolan is with the movie, but Snyder is the director so ultimately it's his vision of Superman I'll either be praising or panning. Count me as another who was very disappointed by Bryan Singer's movie.
Just to add to what Shadoe555 wrote about contrails: The teaser also shows a type of contrail known as a Prandtl-Glauert singularity which is a vapor cone which extends from an aircraft or other fast moving body under certain conditions (usually transonic speed, high maneuverability, and high humidity atmosphere). They are also known as "shock eggs" or "shock collars". I have photographed F-18s at Miramar NAS with these vapor cones and they look much the same as what you see in the trailer. Type "contrail shock cone" into a search engine like Google and look at the images section and you will see examples of this phenomena.
@Shadoe555 - Planes make twin contrails when there are two engines separated by the fuselage of the plane. A single body propelled by a single force (a missile, for instance) only makes one. So are there two Supermans existing slightly to the left and right of each other, or are the trails being produced by his feet?
