Indomina Releasing/Vivendi Visual have revealed that they are planning to release a double disc edition (2D/3D Blu-ray) of acclaimed Hong Kong director Tsui Hark's Flying Swords of Dragon Gate (2011), starring action superstar Jet Li, Xun Zhou and Kun Chen. Street date is October 2.
Ming Dynasty general Chow Wai-On (Jet Li) clashes with nefarious eunuch Yu Hua-Tian (Kun Chen), but the real action begins when the feuding pair encounters Lin Yan-Qiu (Xun Zhou) at a secluded desert outpost known as the Dragon Gate Inn.
I love New Dragon Gate Inn with Bridget Lin, Tony Leung, Maggie Cheung, and Donnie Yen, but heard this was a so-so remake. A lot of wuxia flicks in recent memory have also looked pretty bad in terms over-used CG. I've seen a few clips of this and am already a little disappointed in Jet Li's Cantonese dub voice. I've heard enough of his real voice and a good amount of Cantonese dubbers in his older flicks, but the guy they got for this doesn't even sound close to any of them. Hopefully they'll include a Mandarin dub or something.
Listen to the Mandarin version, it has Jet's own voice. The current listing for the US version is also Mandarin. This trailer is in Mandarin as well, so is the HK Blu-ray.
HK blu-ray does have a Cantonese dub but also includes the original Mandarin language. On a personal note, I was largely disappointed by this film. The story is super bloated and the fights are very average. And considering how impressive the CGI work was on Tsui's previous Detective Dee, Flying Swords features some of the most laughable CGI Ive seen in recent memory.
