In September, Cinedigm Entertainment and New Video Digital will bring Chico & Rita to Blu-ray. This 2012 Academy Award-nominee for Best Animated Feature uses the turbulent relationship of the title characters to take an intimate look at the shifting musical cultures of the latter half of the twentieth century.
From Cinedigm's official synopsis:
"Cuba, 1948. Chico is a young piano player with big dreams. Rita is a beautiful singer with an extraordinary voice. Music and desire unite them as they chase their ambitions and each other from Havana to New York and Hollywood to Paris, in an epic story of love and heartbreak spanning six decades...[The film features a] soundtrack by five-time Grammy-winning Cuban musician and composer Bebo Valdés, with the music of (and animated cameos by) jazz legends Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Tito Puente, [and] Chano Pozo."
Cinedigm's limited edition Blu-ray/DVD combo pack offers the film alongside an audio CD of the full-length soundtrack and a sixteen-page excerpt from the bestselling graphic novel of the same name. The disc also contains the following supplements:
Commentary with directors Fernando Trueba and Javier Mariscal
Making of Chico & Rita featurette
U.S. theatrical trailer
Chico & Rita is expected to street on September 18th.
Finally!! I've been waiting for this for over a year. I was so tempted to get that gorgeous Fnac digibook. I just hope the Cinedigm does the film justice. I'm glad there are going to be extras!
