Kino Lorber has acquired the North American distribution rights to Chilean director Andrés Wood's Violeta se fue a los cielos a.k.a Violeta Went to Heaven (2011), starring Francisca Gavilán, Thomas Durand and Christian Quevedo. The distributor plans to have the film in American theaters at the end of the year.
Violeta Went to Heaven chronicles the life of famed Chilean singer and folklorist Violeta Parra, who popularized the "Nueva Cancion" genre. Earlier this year, the film won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival. The film was also Chile's official submission to the Best Foreign Language Film category of the 84th Academy Awards.
