Warner Brothers announced today that Christopher Nolan's blockbuster The Dark Knight Rises has passed the $100 million global box office mark in 557 IMAX theatres worldwide after its 7th week of release. The film is expected to arrive on Blu-ray later this year.
The Dark Knight Rises reached a total of $65.1 million from 332 IMAX screens domestically and $37.3 million from 225 IMAX screens internationally. The film also opened in China on August 27th in 75 IMAX theaters.
In 2008, during the shooting of The Dark Knight, Christopher Nolan was the first filmmaker to use IMAX cameras in a major motion picture release.
The only other Hollywood production to cross the $100 million milestone for IMAX is James Cameron's Avatar 3D, which will be available on Blu-ray on October 16th.
There's the benefit of releasing in July rather than May. The Avengers was pulled from IMAX screenings after about 10 days in my town! And I believe it was pulled in lieu of (of all things) Battleship! I would have surely seen it a second time in IMAX if given the chance...
My second viewing of the movie was in IMAX and it was a fantastic experience .. i would like to go another time before it leaves the big screen.
Goes to show people still love going to the movies, piracy of movies/music will always exist in some form but there is plenty of money to be made if you do it right!!!
Well when you charge 40% more for fake IMAX and half the showings are in fake IMAX theaters you're going to get more revenue from fake IMAX ticket sales.
three DC theaters playing this in 15/70 IMAX - call that lucky. With that much made alone on the IMAX screens, Nolan should have shot the entire movie in IMAX, or at least the no-IMAX shots in standard 70mm.
Saw it again in true 70mm IMAX one last time on Monday. It's such a unique, beautiful experience. it's a shame it doesn't come around too much. I wish more filmmakers were shooting with IMAX cameras instead of 3D; 3D feels more like a gimmick while IMAX footage is the true cinematic experience. And I say that having enjoyed quite a few 3D movies (Coraline, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Avatar, Hugo, Transformers: Dark of the Moon). I know I'm not the first person to say this, but whatever.
I saw Dark Knight rises in an IMAX theater in Columbia MD. Actually I was kind of disappointed. There must be different screen sizes depending on which IMAX theater you go to. This was definitely not one of those original IMAX screens at various museums that are 4 stories high. This one was just a slightly larger and annoyingly out of focus "normal" movie theater . . . but they sure got our extra hard earned dollars for the privilege of seeing it in IMAX. ) That said, I am also waiting for the Blu-ray so I can enjoy this film again . . . in crystal clear focus.
The safest bet to experience "true" IMAX is to go to one in a science center. You will rarely find an IMAX screen like the ones in a science center. Luckily, I live 30-40 minutes from the one in Harrisburg, PA. Saw TDKR when it came out, and it was incredible. Best movie-theater experience I've been to in a while. Second only to seeing Avatar in IMAX in fact. Rest assured, if there's a big movie coming out in that theater, I'll be there.
